The only other real candidate I see is Cantu for his RBI single...and honestly, that doesn't trump 7 quality innings, and John Baker, with his RBI and performance behind the plate.

Volstad had a decent game in a pitchers ball park but at least he's getting back on track and was able to get out of jams like he did last season.

He fell behind constantly, had a horrible strikes to balls ratio, four walks, and should have given up much more than one run.

For no reason what-so-ever other than the post that started this little discussion. so you're saying that if a guy struggles to throw strikes, walks 4 batters, and is generally not on his game, it's fallacious to say that he didn't pitch well? Regardless of how many runs crossed the plate (in an offensive environment that makes run scoring difficult and against a team that can't hit anyways.), you can judge a pitcher based on how he threw and not on the result. Of course, you can also look at the result, but when so much points one way and the result is your only point in favor, it's probably not a very good point. The only real positive from his outing was 13 groundballs to 6 flyballs. But since you're all about watching the game without pesky things like numerical recordings of what happened on the field, can you honestly say you watched volstad last night and said 'man, Chris is reaaaaaaally on tonight'?

Volstad was not reaaally on too many balls. But he adjusted well made good pitches when needed to. How many deep flys would have been homers if it wasnt PETCO? None . So pitching in this Pitchers park means nothing for this groundball pitcher at all. Vandenhurk had 12 FO and only 1 GO so PETCO maybe helped him a lot Most of the Padres are weak hitters thogh.
