August 1, 200917 yr I know that Lindstrom is coming back but I think everyone can admit Nunez has been considerably better than Lindstrom. Maybe they should switch roles. I'd hate to stop Nunez, he's been on a roll.
August 1, 200917 yr Lindstrom can be out as long as he wants as far as I'm concerned. Go kick him in the knee tomorrow as he arrives to the stadium.
August 1, 200917 yr Lindstrom is just not good. Keep him away. He's good, but he's just struggling this year.
August 1, 200917 yr I think Matt can help the pen but Leo has been doing well in the closer roll. I'm not a fan of Leo's explosion of emotion after saves but as long as he keeps getting saves without giving me heart attacks I'll live with it happily.

I'm not a fan of Leo's explosion of emotion after saves but as long as he keeps getting saves without giving me heart attacks I'll live with it happily. I don't really care much, but I kinda have a problem with it too. For all the sh*t I give Lindstrom, I can at least say he acts like a professional after a save. But as long as Leo keeps getting the job done, he can do his little KRod imitations, for all I care. At the end of the day, the W is all that matters, and Leo has clearly outperformed Lindstrom this year...pretty much everyone has.
August 1, 200917 yr Right now he's just doing it for K's and it looks more like legitimate excitement as opposed to hotdogging. Now, if he starts doing what K-Rod and Valverde where they start going crazy for a lazy flyout to CF, I'm gonna be angry.
August 1, 200917 yr I perosnally like Leo's approach. It's called swagger. K-Rod like. Aint nothing wrong with being demonstrative after a big save.
August 1, 200917 yr I perosnally like Leo's approach. It's called swagger. K-Rod like. Aint nothing wrong with being demonstrative after a big save. He came in with a 3 run lead tonight. Act like you've been there before. I can understand if it was a tight spot and he got a K...but it's a 3 run lead. %'s say that pretty much every 3 run lead gets "saved." Meyer's situation was much tougher tonight in the 7th, and he acted...well, like a professional. Heck, Ross Gload hit a walkoff the other night, and he didn't showoff nearly as much as Leo did tonight after a "3 run lead save."
August 1, 200917 yr On the other hand, if the opponent has a problem with it...they can hit him and make him not do it. Me personally, I'd like to see him act a little differently in that situation. But that's just an opinion.
August 1, 200917 yr no concern over the recent HRs and runs allowed since the break? i really like nunez (as I think many others do as well) - I guess he's not really walking people and he seems to be breaking out of it so I'm willing to ride with him for a while as well all up I'm a lot happier with the bullpen options than I was a month ago
August 1, 200917 yr Leo is not as scary as Lindstrom, but let's not act like the guy is completely reliable. He has his scary moments as well. Guys like Calero or Meyer have had more success against batters this year, but I guess the closer just has to be someone who throws hard, right?

I think you liked a guy who throws hard as it allows for a bigger margin of error and they usually have the ability to get K's when needed. There's not many closer like Hoffman right now and he used to throw hard.

Wasting your best reliever in the 9th inning kinda sucks.
August 1, 200917 yr Marmol and Nunez... i swear those guys are brothers. Such similiar approaches. But while i agree he should close i wish we had a closer because i think he's more valuable in the setup role. Really like this bullpen though no matter who closes. Committee? Fine by me. Its not like we have any liabilities in there, imo.

August 1, 200917 yr Nunez has been pretty far from lights out sine Lindstrom went out. We've seen him give up his share of late game homers and stuff, not to the extent that Lindstrom was but he is very far from being dominant either. Nunez is very exitable and doesn't have the composure that you want out of a closer. Lindstrosm is not the greatest in terms of composure either, but I think that if Lindstrom comes out of the gate throwing like he did in years past, it's less of an issue. Nunez is really an ideal setup man and he should stay that way. Asking him to be a closer for too long is going to turn him into Latroy Hawkins if he does start blowing saves.

Wasting your best reliever in the 9th inning kinda sucks. What if the ninth inning is the most crucial inning in the game? Do you trust Leo Nunez with one run leads in the ninth? I certainly don't trust him more than Meyer or Calero. The idea of a closer is stupid anyhow.

I certainly don't trust him more than Meyer or Calero. The idea of a closer is stupid anyhow. The ninth inning is the most crucial inning because it is last, yes. But much more often the innings earlier involve more tie games and more closer games. A perfect example is last night, where by the time the ninth inning rolled around we had a three run lead yet there were some very crucial moments where our setup men had to battle through to keep the game tied. From a manager's standpoint, it is much more beneficial to be able to employ your best relievers in these type of spots, where they come in with two runners on and a hit lets the other team gain the lead. Coming in at the beginning of an inning, which is what most closers do, pales in comparison. The closer role has become so symbolic that managers are criticized for using a closer in an unconventional way, even if it gives their team the best chance to win a game. Its becoming more of a trend to not put your supposed best reliever as closer, and I'm really starting to agree with that movement.

What's wrong with Leo showing some emotion after games. I like the fact that he takes his job serious and actually shows that he is excited when he performs well. Maybe its just me.

Did you see the way the Cubs batter stared at Nunez? He obviously didn't appreciate the overreaction.
August 1, 200917 yr What happens if Lindstrom and Leo start sharing the closer's role, and they each get a considerable amount of "saves" by season's end? Wouldn't that suck? (in terms of arbritration, etc.) I'm asking b/c I'm not sure how that works. It would suck if both got huge raises just for racking up saves, imo.
