Posted August 16, 200915 yr How many songs have you guys heard that you believed sound better when covered by a band than the original? For me, certain Metallica songs that were covered sound a LOT better than the original. Such as: - Creeping Death and Sanitarium by Bullet for my Valentine - Fade to Black by Sonata Arctica - Master of Puppets by Trivium Anyone got anything similar?
August 16, 200915 yr I loved the Orgy cover of "Blue Monday". And of course, everyone's favorite most depressing song ever, "Mad World", covered by Gary Jules. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4

I really like Tamia's cover of 'Careless Whisper' more-so than the original.
August 16, 200915 yr Goldfinger's cover of 99 Red Balloons (Nena) from German to English was better for sure. Alien Ant Farm's cover of Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal is a close one though I dont think it actually tops MJ's version. New Found Glory's cover of Simple Mind's Don't You (Forget About Me) is also another good one.

August 16, 200915 yr Can't have a cover thread without Buckley's cover of Hallelujah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AratTMGrHaQ Absolutely love Anathema's cover of REM's Better Off Dead. Turns a sarcastic punk rock songs into a depressing piano ballad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqAC0PfzwIs Although the song itself isn't particularly impressive, the cover getsmad dap for the fact that it then lead to an amazing concept CD. Okkervil River covering Tim Hardin's Black Sheep Boy. Easily one of my favorite bands, Toe, covering Husking Bee's 8.6. Really different then their other stuff though since there's such a focus on vocals. Nirvana covering Leadbelly's Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Hell, goes for most of their covers that night, and The Wiper's D-7. Liked The Wiper's version more musically but it's hard to top Cobain's vocal talents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xHl-P_arVA d-7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWrBs1HkJoU&feature=channel_page (Favorite version with just how heavy it is compared to the two studio versions). Speaking of Nirvana, does this count? lol. I love Cobain so much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtehDIWrX5U&feature=channel_page And can't bring up Nirvana and covers without Tori Amos covering Smells like Teen Spirit. Supposedly she's covered Mad World but I haven't been able to find it (Which, yeah, Gary Jule's version is f***ing awesome) MSI's cover of Method Man's Bring the Pain is just fun to rock out to. Same with RATM's cover of Springsteen's The Ghost of Tom Joad. Bring the Pain: Tom Joad: Marilyn Manson covering Eurythmic's Sweet Dreams are made of these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdf1Q5__uvg I also really like The String Quarlet's cover of Tool's sober, but didn't like the rest of the CD. I also never listened to their Nirvana CD. Saw a link to the Come As You Are song under the related videos for the Sober video and it's damn good. Blasemphious to some but not a MJ fan but enjoy Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDeFYDk8atg Nowhere near as good as the original IMO but I still gotta give him mad dap cuz it's still good. Timo Raisanen covering Radiohead's Creep Would this count? lol. It's bright eyes covering Beetovan's Road To Joy, kinda Ben Kweller covering Smashing Pumpkin's Today Bedlight for Blue Eyes covering Third Eye Blind's Jumper http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERz8QbIkcws For Some amatuer stuff Love Lux Aeterna piano covers. I love the sound of this piano the most from others I've heard, though the person also messes up a couple times http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn_uLa9oNRk&feature=channel_page And gogo Piano covers. Now a guy who does a bunch of Tool piano covers lol. 7:30 to end in his Lateralus one is just amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOGCDc34m-4 Lovvvvvve her voice. Cover of Moon on the Water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NmoBeLc_dE&feature=channel_page And to be a bitch, covers I hated: Johnny Cash covering Bonnie "Prince" Billie's "I See A Darkness". Absolute can't stand Cash's version, whereas Bonnie "Prince" Billie's is one of my favorite songs. Also, while I do like his cover of the song on a different plane than I like the original, I think his cover of NIN's hurt is vastly overrated. Anything off of A Perfect Circle's Emotive. Which sucks because APC is one of my favorite bands. Panic! At the Disco covering Smashing Pumpkins Tonight Tonight....just absolutely horrible.
August 16, 200915 yr Oh you also can't have a cover thread without this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IliwQImJrYE Or without Mr. Rosso covering Alice in Chains. God I love Jason Segel so much hahahaha http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZOTQ3v2sI0

I mean, usually I'll say something like "you really need to listen" or something but in this case you obviously just have some mental deficiency.
August 16, 200915 yr Nny, you know you can't bring up the words "Nirvana" and "Cover" without including their cover of Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GjNMV5Q-P0
August 16, 200915 yr I did say also their other cover from that set Where Did you sleep last night is my fav though, with that one being #2
August 16, 200915 yr Jesus Christ I didn't realize the Vitamin String Quartet had so many CDs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_String_Quartet looks like well over 100. Speaking of Some guy singing Karma Police over the String Quartet's cover of Karma police. Real nice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSTHLX6UqNw&feature=related
August 16, 200915 yr Jesus Christ go to that guy's channel and check out the other radiohead songs. String Quartet did an amazing job on them and although that guy is no Thom Yorke he's still good.
August 16, 200915 yr SR-71's cover of "In Your Eyes" over Peter Frampton's... pretty much actually blows it away... I'd say most of NFG's "From the Screen to Your Stereo" albums are at LEAST as good as the originals, if not more enjoyable. They're not formally covers (at least, none that I have in my library /sad face) but Dream Theater does a lot of good work covering Iron Maiden and Metallica. Save Ferris - Come on Eileen is definitely better, IMO Reel Big Fish - Skatris (tetris theme) and Take on Me
August 16, 200915 yr Pendulum's cover of "I'm Not Alone" by Calvin Harris is much better. As is their cover of "Voodoo People" originally done by The Prodigy.

August 16, 200915 yr SR-71's cover of "In Your Eyes" over Peter Frampton's... pretty much actually blows it away... Peter Gabriel maybe? My contribution - Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You" was quite a bit better than Dolly Parton's.

August 18, 200915 yr Author Not that I don't mind disagreements over opinions, but come on, don't call me an idiot or a blasphemer for having a preference. Is it illegal to have an open mind?

Save Ferris - Come on Eileen is definitely better, IMO Reel Big Fish - Skatris (tetris theme) and Take on Me I heart you. Also, nitpick time - Nny, the Beethoven song is Ode to Joy, but the cover is Road to Joy. Man, though, you have an impressively extensive knowledge of music. Kris Allen's cover of Heartless on American Idol was guess. So was David Cook's cover of Billie Jean (he actually used someone else's version, I forget whose, though). It's near impossible to top the original, but i thoroughly enjoyed this version, as well.

August 19, 200915 yr I heart you. lessthanthree Since you're obviously a man who enjoys his ska, do you know of any other good ska bands with female vocalists?
