Does anyone besides me not want Stephen Strasburg to sign a record breaking contract with the Nats? Granted, I would love to see the guy play in the majors as he looks incredible, and would be fun to watch....but not with the Nationals! It would be a pain in the ass to face this guy if he indeed is a phenom and the next best thing.

 

I hope he just waits to get drafted again by a team outside of our division, hell outside of our league so we can watch him from afar and possibly face him at the most once a year.

Guess who they will draft with that 2nd overall pick? Yeah, that's right, it's Stephen Strasburg. So it doesn't matter, either way they are going to get Strasburg, whether it be this year or next year (unless the Royals are horriawful from now until the end of the season).

i hate the MLB and NFL draft system. it's ridiculous when guys like matt ryan get 72 million before they even play in one NFL game. the NFL and MLB should have a slotting system like the NBA does and there wouldn't be problems like this. the way things are going now the bad teams aren't getting better through drafts because they can't afford to sign their picks.

The MLB does have a slotting system but it can be waived buy the commish. Bud has already waived it for the Nats and Strasburg. I totally agree with you though, its unreal how much these "kids" get paid before they play a single game

exactly. mlb doesn't care about small market teams. they want to see big market team always succeeding so that they can make more money.

I mean if you are the Nats it is almost a must to get Strasburg signed to save face, but if Boras' asking price is as high as I have heard, I would balk at the offer as well if I were the Nats owner.

 

I mean come on! You are 22 years old, you are being offered $17 million guaranteed with a possibility to make $20 million with incentives, I mean you really have to be dumb to not take the deal. No career is guaranteed, and he may never get a chance at that kind of contract ever again.

boras is a douche, but you got to admit if you were an agent you'd try to get as much money as possible. teams hate him, but players love him. as long as teams continue to dish out the dough, boras will keep raising the price for his players.

But some of the problem is deffinatly Scott Boras, who has the same problem with last years top pick Pedro Alvarez (Pirates). I'm anxious to see how Strasburg will do in the minors actually, from what i've read he only really became good at SDSU. This is kind of along the lines with super prospects, do any of you guys think the Marlins have a good chance of signing Ardolis Chapman. South Florida has a strong cuban presence but I think Chapman is more in it for the money like previous star cuban pitchers than he is for the enviroment.

I don't want him to sign, because I think that will be such a laughing stock moment for MLB that the commissioner would have to broker an agreement between club owners and the player's association to finally come up with a slotting system. It's long overdue.

I usually don't go as low as to wish injuries on players, but in this case, if Strasburg were to hold out another year and suffer a career-ending arm injury while pitching in some independent league, I wouldn't feel the least bit sorry. This kind of greed really bothers me, and I think both Boras and Strasburg are to blame. I don't care how good this kid is supposed to be, the amount of leverage they think they possess in this whole thing is really irritating.

I read the yanks are supposed to be vey high on Chapman.

 

As for Strasburg he apparently has the final say if the deal gets done. Of course Boras will have a strong say but if Strasburg really wants to start his pro career he can. I remember Arod going over Boras's head to get his most recnet deal with the yanks done.

i didn't take that into consideration. you're probably right, but they do have dye, thome, contreras, dotel, and castro coming off the books as well as possibly trading jenks since he has struggled. although i think that the red sox make sense too since their pitching depth has depleted this season and they might want to add on to it.

I agree. The kid hasn't proven anything yet and he's already trying to make more than a pretty good professional ballplayer. Boras is just trying to earn more money on commission and doesn't seem to be taking the kid's future into account. He could end up with nothing along the road as opposed to the 20 Million (that if you live intelligently, could last you the rest of your life) he'd be getting now.

If I we're the Nats owner, I would save all that million on more than

just one player who will play once every five days and isn't a proven.

I'm way more worried about the Nats possibly getting Harper next year than Strasburg.
