He's never been as bad as people make him out to be, if only because he's never been the worst player in our everyday lineup (Maybe last year once Baker came up). It's amazing how people will ignore the good when it comes to Hermida just because he isn't what he "should" be. Hermida has not had the kind of slugging numbers we want, but this is an appalling park for a left handed bat and he isn't the kind of guy that ill hit a ball 500 feet 35 times a year. He gets on base, he runs OK, and has been hot for like 5 weeks now.

 

If you want us to make a run at the Phillies, this is a significant blow to our chances.

I actually didn't realize he wasn't playing until yesterday, when I was thinking about our outfield. He's never been a guy that was overly noticeable to me, especially now that Maybin is back up.

Well atm I believe molding Maybin for this September and having him start the season next year is more important. We have a guy like Stanton who will be ready late next season. We have a guy like Morrison who can play LF next season if needed, and we have guys like Peterson/Raynor/Cousins who could be serviceable (and I believe better production than Hermida has given us the last two season).

 

We have seen Hermida as a streaky player (more bad than good), I'd like to stop using Hermida as the fill in piece until we find someone better, because we have a plethora of minor league OF talent near ready to come in. Hell we even have the option to leave Coghlan in LF with Maybin in CF and Cody in RF. There are way too many better options to keep Hermida next year for around $4-5 million when we could get cheaper, younger talent who can produce better imo (I still think as a whole Hermida isn't a max effort player, although he has shown effort somewhat this year)>

Morrison's played 2 guys in his LF his entire minor league career. Stanton obviously isn't ready, and I think Peterson might not be either. Raynor's had a worse season in AAA than Hermida has had up here and the same could possibly be said about Cousins, though he's in AA.

 

There's not way too many options, there's really only one real one, which would be our current outfield. And that might not be possible with NJ and Uggla/Cantu leaving opening a whole at possibly both 2B and 3B.

I don't think defense would be a big issue when putting Morrison in his position. If Coghlan needs to move to 2B, and we keep one of Cantu/NJ, we'd probably have the Boni/Sanchez experiment once again at 3B, and I don't see an issue putting Morrison in a new position. If his offense is up to par, which is BB/K ratio seems to indicate and a number of other stats, I don't see why we should suffer through another sub par season from Hermida because we don't feel Morrison would be a + defensive player.

Hermida led the SL with 111 walks and a .457 on-base percentage in 2005, and while he isn't the free swinger the other guys are, he hasn't been nearly as disciplined with the Marlins. I hold out more hope for him than the rest of this group, and I wonder if Hermida has focused too much on trying to hit homers rather than letting them come naturally.

I have to agree with fish. Average defense + .750 OPS in the OF is below average. Running a quick filter in the NL for RF's with 350+ PAs, Hermida's .742 OPS this year puts him 10/14. His career OPS of .769 would put him 8/14 this year. I think he's slightly below average, at this point.

He's also a butcher on the base paths.

 

The average RF OPS normally sits between .790-.800. So Hermida's cost us probably around 1-3 wins the past two years compared to an average RFer.

Well, if Hermida could play second base or shortstop and put up a .750 OPS then he would be very valuable, but for a corner outfielder, he should be putting up a high .700 OPS, maybe even a low .800 OPS. I wouldn't call his defense average either, since he has a career -8.6 UZR/150 in the outfield. Add that to the fact that he isn't a great baserunner, he has a career 25 K%, and he has a combined .4 WAR from 2008-2009, he doesn't have much value.

 

A player who can put up a high .700 OPS against RHP would make a very valuable bench bat, but a below average starter.

Last time I heard, he was a little below that, but that was probably over a month ago. I don't know where to find season stats for +/-, so I used UZR. Regardless, I know he hasn't been a great defensive player according to +/- in the past.

I kinda hope he gets traded and becomes the player we all wanted him to be. I guess that sounds "anti-fish," but like with Jacobs, I wish him all the best.
