40-man roster decisions on tap

Teams have until Friday to finalize 40-man rosters before next month's Rule 5 Draft at the Winter Meetings. The Marlins have numerous eligible players and not a lot of room to accommodate them.

The 40-man currently is at 35 after the addition of right-hander Hayden Penn and Alfredo Amezaga's activation from the 60-day disabled list.

Here's a look at who the Marlins could lose unless added to the 40-man: catcher Brad Davis, pitchers Jeff Gogal, Chris Mobley, Kyle Winters, Kris Harvey, Brett Sinkbeil, Graham Taylor, Brad Stone and Jay Buente, and outfielders Scott Cousins and John Raynor.

My guess is Cousins and Raynor will be protected. Sinkbeil also is a good possibility. He hasn't lived up to his first-round billing, but he made some strides as a reliever. Don't think the Marlins are prepared to give up on him yet. The Marlins thought enough of Buente to send him to the Arizona Fall League, where he had a 5.56 ERA in nine appearances (11 1/3 innings) with two walks and 14 strikeouts. Doubtful the Marlins leave him unprotected.

The Marlins could use all five available roster spots, but that would preclude them from making a Rule 5 selection unless they cut somebody before the Dec. 10 draft.

Also for your perusal, the list of minor leaguers granted free agency. The Marlins always seem to come up with a couple of gems out of this group. Anyone care to venture a guess as to who might be the next Brian Sanches or Joe Nelson?

I believe Jeff Allison also needs to be protected.

Cousins and Winters are the only musts. If there is space for two more (allowing us to try and snag another free LOOGY in the Rule V), I'd go Sinkbiel and Buente. Graham already cleared waivers last year, so no one wants him. And he isn't very good. Raynor is just a speedster outfielder who doesn't matter with Maybin, Ross, Carroll, Jai, Petersen, Cousins, and Stanton all in AA or above. We have to find pitchers. Not bench outfielders.

I can't see Allison as a priority on the 40, his fastball tops out at 90 mph, if they can keep him in AA for a full year and see if he can maintain some consistency then protect next year, I don't see him being ready for a full year on someone elses MLB roster. With Winters coming off the injury I think they can sneak him through too.

What about Logan Morrison and Jose Ceda? I believe both are eligible

Logan def is too, I completely forgot about him. He will be going on for sure. Ceda may get an injury exemption, I haven't seen much about him lately.

Here's who I would take a look at if I were the Marlins (among MiLB FAs):

Arizona: OF Trent Oeltjen (could be a decent backup outfielder)

Cleveland: SS Josh Barfield (has shown talent in the past, would make a pretty strong backup for the left side of the infield)

Kansas City: RP Chad Orvella (was a decent reliever a few years ago, but had some setbacks. could be another Dan Meyer type pitcher)

Milwaukee: LHP Chris Capuano (another pitcher who was good for a few years, but then fell off a cliff. his prior talent would suggest that he is worth a gamble)

Minnesota: RP Oswaldo Sosa (was a good prospect until 2008, when he struggled. Didn't pitch much in 2009, I guess due to injury. Worth a shot.)

NY Yankees: RP Humberto Sanchez (one of Detroit's highest-rated prospects before he got injured. If he can still pitch, he has a lot of talent)

SF Giants: RP Kelvin Pichardo (really good minor league numbers until he got injured or something in 2009)

Seattle: RPs Chad Cordero, Jeff Zimmerman (both formerly All-Star relievers who have had major injury issues in the past. Both have loads of talent when healthy.)
