This doesn't surprise me at all but the fact that the Marlins might not tender a contract to Ronny Paulino bothers me.

I highly doubt Paulino get's non-tendered. There's just about no reason to.

What are the chances he comes back anyway? Possibly see what is out there if there isn't a big market would the marlins want him back/would he want to come back?

The Marlins will not offer a contract to utility infielder Alfredo Amezaga before tonight's midnight deadline. After four celebrated seasons with the Marlins, Amezaga will become a free agent.

 

Amezaga's agent, Mike Nicotera, said the Marlins did express interest in re-signing his client at a lower price.

 

"[The] door is not closed by any means, but we are going to see which clubs step forward and get a sense of the market for Alfredo before making any decision," Nicotera said.

 

Amezaga is coming off microfracture knee surgery. He has yet to begin a running program, but is expected to be ready come spring training. Per the collective bargaining agreement, the Marlins could not offer Amezaga less than 20 percent of the $1.3 million he earned in 2009. Guaranteeing him $1,040,000 apparently was too rich for the Marlins, considering Amezaga played just a fraction of last season.

 

No official word yet, but the Marlins are expected to tender contracts to their nine other arbitration-eligible players: Dan Uggla, Jorge Cantu, Ronny Paulino, Cody Ross, Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez, Leo Nunez and Renyel Pinto.

 

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported earlier this afternoon the Marlins were undecided about Paulino. That's somewhat surprising.

 

During the winter meetings I spoke with a couple of people who led me to believe the Marlins catching situation was not going to change in 2010. The left-handed hitting John Baker gets most of the playing time against right-handers and Paulino starts against lefties. It's an off financial dynamic in that Paulino as the backup would earn considerably more than Baker, who isn't arbitration-eligible until after 2011.

 

Another factor is that Paulino is a former big league starter. The Marlins are covered if anything happens to Baker. While the Marlins like Brett Hayes, the Marlins would be rolling the dice if Baker goes down.

Poor Alfredo was also good friends with Cody Ross.They would go to the Hard Rock together.

Being non-tendered certainly lowers the chances, but the Marlins could still bring him back for a presumably less dollar amount. If the Marlins do consider, the number would probably need to be near the minimum.

Him and Duggla were very close too. They often danced and cuddled. Poor buddies.

I really love it when a guy like this makes it and shows all the "board experts" just how much they really don't know while they continually forget to mention how one of their favs have been, and continue, to play.

 

Some of us are pulling for ya Boni!!! Not one of my favs, but I just love to see a guy overcome his downfalls and actually produce.

There were clubs interested in him. Evidently no offer was made that was deemed good enough, for whatever reason. But let's not start with the "but we could have gotten something for him at least" comments. Looks like they are hoping no one is going to pick him up because of the injuries so we can get him back at a reduced rate. I still think that reduced rate will be around $1 mil tho. Just not guranteed.

I think we'd ALL love it if he played well. Some of us just got sick of him sucking and being played every day for 4 months without ever producing after week 1.

It was a shame that Amezaga got injured so early in 2009 but we already have Version 2.0 of him in Bonifacio - as in Mr Utility. Bonifacio would be good in that role as he cannot be a regular starter.

I think they saw too much in the beginning of 2009 and they think he can reach that--well close to that--and Bonifacio will continue to get too much playing time and will be viewed by Mr. Utility by too many when he shouldn't be. Of course I would like to be wrong, but I just can't see him being a very productive player.

I know, it's not like I'd spite the entire team, just to watch Bonifacio be bad...However, he hasn't proven to be a starter....
