January 7, 201016 yr Before Bud Selig steps down he would like to see the U.S. world series champ vs. the Japan Series champ... Selig met with Japan's Comish and are trying to work it out..
January 7, 201016 yr Sounds like a great idea in principle, but I doubt very serious that the Players Association would agree to this without some serious compensation. Also the season would have to be shortened to accomodate this bunus round of baseball, people already complain about the WBC and what it does to players.
January 8, 201016 yr Sounds like it would be fun. I think it should be in a neutral location though, like.. Hmm... Germany? *shrug*

The biggest, and worst, gimmick in baseball is the DH though.
January 8, 201016 yr I think the home field advantage being dependent upon the All Star Game winner is a pretty big gimmick. That was clearly nothing more than a marketing ploy and most baseball fans saw through it.

January 9, 201016 yr Yeah the home field advantage is crap, but I do like interleague play. Another crap is the DH thing, either both have no dh or do have a dh, it should be the same for both leagues!

January 10, 201016 yr Sounds like a pretty crappy idea to me. Why? Just because? Not bashing anyone here, but I would like to hear a reason why you wouldn't want to see that. I think its a great idea and I hope it happens. I am just wondering why you guys dont want to see it happen?

I think its a great idea and I hope it happens. I am just wondering why you guys dont want to see it happen? Yes, agreed. I'm also genuinely interested in knowing why some of you think the DH, Interleague Play, All-Star Game, and WS Home Field Advantage are gimmicks as well. I may not be the oldest or longest Baseball follower but I actually see these as cool things in the sport. Maybe if I receive some specific or good reasons why some of you disagree, I could see your point on the issue.

Home field advantage at the ASG only exists because of the backlash against the 2002 game that ended in a tie. It exists purely for ratings. And the game is the same way. The DH is little league baseball.
January 10, 201016 yr To me, a gimmick is something that does not add substance while (in this case, since it's marketing) trying to get more money/audience/ect. ASG is a gimmick, it adds nothing of substance to major league baseball. Basing the world series off the ASG is a gimmick of a fail gimmick, so rather than trying to fix the gimmick they tack on another gimmick to this gimmick...gimmick. Interleague play is a gimmick, and likewise has it's own gimmicks added on to it to try to make it appealing without having to add anything of substance (basically, the rivalry games that no one actually cares about besides, like, 2 cities). DH isn't a gimmick since it's altering the game at it's core to try and improve it. Whether it improved it or not is up for your opinion, but it's not a gimmick.
January 10, 201016 yr I agree with what Nny says. My opposition to this proposal is based on the fact that MLB already has an internationalization effort with the WBC. If there is a genuine concern in establishing the "true" world champion, this is perhaps the best model. With the WBC model already in place, it seems silly to pair up a US World Series winner and a Japanese champion after they never previously competed against each other and never shared the same opponents during the regular season. The season is already long enough and I think there are too many playoff rounds (I suspect MLB will only add more in the future).
