I assume the Cody is in/Robertson is third story has already been posted from the ones above me. I said this several days ago because more than anything else if you didn't move Robertson to third, mathematically it would be impossible to schedule him against Philadelphia, the very team they say they needed to acquire a lefty to use against. If Robertson stays in the third position, and the rotation stays intact, then he would miss our next series against the Philliees which is at the end of May. If he were to stay in the 5th spot, he would miss the first series against them, but he would pitch in the second series. Everything eventually balances out, which is yet another reason why the trade was worthless.

 

It's bad enough that the point of the Robertson trade was just to have a lefty in the rotation, but if a further reason as to why they acquired him was to have a lefty face the Phillies, then it shows how incompetent the FO is on this issue.

 

I wonder if they even realize the fact that the Phillies were a better hitting team against LHP than RHP last season (not to mention that swapping Feliz for Polanco will add to that fact?) Do they realize that Hensley's career numbers against LHB are almost as good as Robertson's against them? Did they even bother to look at Robertson's career .828 OPS-against when facing RHB?

 

The argument that we need a lefty in the rotation, especially for the Philies, is complete nonsense. They need to let the better pitcher pitch, and be more worried about how the opposing teams as whole will match up with a certain pitcher, not about getting Chase Utley and Ryan Howard out.

I actually agree with your premise you pitch the five best guys regardless but obviously the organization doesn't. If they were willing to make this adjustment to get him positioned where they think he'll be most valuable (vs the Phillies) don't be surprised if he performs as they hope that they skip one of the their fourth or fifth starters, or alternatively slide Hensley in for a spot start to position Robertson again for that second series.

you don't know thar hensley is a better option overall than robertson. hensley had a great spring and so has robertson. hensley will be in the rotation soon because something tells me Anibal isn't ready

They're strategizing to the Phillies series on April 16-18. If they had left Robertson in the 5th spot, he wouldn't pitch against the Phillies that series. As it stands, he will pitch against them. In all likelihood, this strategy will backfire in the future (assuming they keep the same rotation, same order, etc.). They can make adjustments when they get off days, I suppose, but I think that becomes harder to do as the season goes on.

This move is good. First, if Robertson is a one year rental and we need him to eat up innings for us. If he pitches decent, great! If not, at least we know he can keep you in the ballgame and will eat innings. You don't really know that with Anibal. He's a player that is coming off a lot of problems and we won't want to blow him out to soon. This is Anibal's last chance. Those that don't like him won't have to put up with him long if he doesn't perform this year. If he becomes the weakest link, he'll be traded by the trade deadline.

I'm too lazy to look my self but I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to line up a Robertson start for the second Philly series using off days to push guys around, plus could always just have Hensley make a spot start. If they're hell bent on getting Robertson against the Phillies, it won't be difficult to match it up.

Yeah, it is a bit weird. Considering the nice amount of off-days we have in the first month or so, I'm sure they could've have made a bunch of different options work. I have to assume they felt that this set up would accomodate the best of those options.

i think theres just a good chance that robertson is the 3rd best starter on the team...

I wouldnt go that far... people might be afraid of Sanchez's boom-bust potential but I'd say he's better than Robertson just numberwise. And then as far as Volstad... I'll say it again he's got the stuff just needs to put it together.
