March 31, 201016 yr 1. Josh Johnson 2. Ricky Nolasco 3. Anibal Sanchez 4. Chris Volstad 5. Nate Robertson
March 31, 201016 yr Volstad better shape up quick from next season cause VH are Hensley are breathing down his neck.
March 31, 201016 yr If the Marlins pitch their five man rotation in order Nate Robertson will miss the Phillies series, the very team the organization held up as an example of why they needed a lefty in the rotation in the first place. There was some talk at one point of only needing four starters because of a day off after the season opener in NYC, and went Johnson, Nolasco, Sanchez and Volstad before rolling over the rotation and starting from the top again so Robertson would pitch in the ninth game, he misses the Phillies Series. Only if they pitch a four man rotation THREE TIMES, meaning the second and third times through pitchers are throwing on four days rest which seems unwise and unnecessary, adding Robertson at the end of that third rotation would he pitch the last game of the Phillies series. So if they go 1-5, then 1-5 again, he misses Philly. Capozzi just said he'll start either Saturday or Sunday against LA. For him to pitch on Sunday requires five starts before him so assuming it's Saturday, his next start would be the final game of the Cincy series. Any way you cut it they either shake up the rotation or throw Hensley or someone else out there to spot start they miss using Robertson where they said he's needed the most. edit: BTW We'll see Robertson tomorrow starting in place of Hensley.

April 1, 201016 yr Volstad is the huge key to this rotation. I see us going as far as he takes us in a way. Obviously i dont mean he needs to carry us, but i think if he has a big year we can go as far as possible, but if he doesnt..... I think we will be stuck with some of the same inconsistencies overall as we have in many of the previous years.
April 1, 201016 yr Volstad better shape up quick from next season cause VH are Hensley are breathing down his neck. More worried about Anibal Sanchez than I am Volstad. For me Anibal is the one i am least concerned about as long as he is healthy. If he is healthy I think he is a very solid, consistent no.3 option.

I've been really down on Robertson lately, but it's worth noting that Anibal (and to a lesser extent Volstad) are also huge question marks in the rotation. Robertson could pitch pretty poorly and not even be the weakest link. In that respect, we might see both Hensley and Robertson in the rotation and the recent trade might not seem so terrible after all. There are a lot of "what ifs?" in this equation though.
April 1, 201016 yr On the positive side of things, we have options. Depth is a necessity, though often teams do not have sufficient backup.
April 1, 201016 yr I think the only non-question mark is Johnson in this lineup. You dont know what will come out of Nolasco. Which Nolasco shows up? To me Sanchez and Nolasco are in the same boat... hopefully they both come out good. With Volstad... you know he's got the skillset he just needs to put himself together. I honestly see Volstad as the difference in a playoff team this year. As for Robertson... I expect him to start the season off nicely before the batters start adjusting to his pitching... and I expect the Marlins to be actively shuffling that 5th spot.

I think he will have a great year this year and has shown to be very dominate at times. sanchez on the other hand has been very iffy at times and has shown to be a solid pitcher but no where even close to as good as nolasKo

To think Nolasco isn't guaranteed to be a top 30 pitcher isn't outlandish.
April 1, 201016 yr Dan Jennings was on XM Radio Tuesday, and he said that Randy St. Claire found a problem with Volstad's delivery that he then helped him fix. The game after that he went 7 innings and did very well. So maybe they found out his problem from last year?

Wow Randy St. Claire is really getting on it this season, hopefully he brings everyone to form and gives us 5 starters with 12 + wins and and a solid bullpen with a combined ERA under 4.5.

I hope soo though. Back to my orignal post i see what you guys are saying about sanchez being more of a risk than volstad but at least sanchez has shown he can be consistent when healthy.
April 2, 201016 yr 5 pitchers with 12 wins would is almost impossible with the starters we have. I hope soo though. How so? J.J. and Nolasco can easily win 12 games, Anibal can get about there, Volstad if he gets that rookie form back can get 12 the only real X factor is how well Robertson pitches mainly his command.
April 2, 201016 yr In seriousness, Nolasco is coming off a horrific season overall. To think Nolasco isn't guaranteed to be a top 30 pitcher isn't outlandish. But to say he has the same question marks as Anibal? The guy with two major arm surgeries under his belt who hasn't thrown a full season ever and who is highly unlikely to ever fully recover from his labrum injury?

To think Nolasco isn't guaranteed to be a top 30 pitcher isn't outlandish. Seriously? If you consider the season to be April and May, yes. But after he was sent down he came back and pitched pretty well. You take out those two first months and his season was pretty decent. If we get that Nolasco, the one of the post-May demotion, he will do fine. And while ST is not a prediction of the regular season, he could at least use his numbers to start the season in a confident manner. I do not think that anyone here can question his stuff or control, so in the end, it's all in his head, really.

Lets say that JJ, nolasco, Volstad,, and Sanchez get 12 wins. By saying all our pitchers will get 12 wins your asuming that Nate pitches a complete season, which he most likely wont. If he doesnt then it is impossible for VH, West, Miller or Hensley to get 12 wins when theyre not pitching a whole season.

But to say he has the same question marks as Anibal? The guy with two major arm surgeries under his belt who hasn't thrown a full season ever and who is highly unlikely to ever fully recover from his labrum injury? That is a different story. One is based on a previous performance inconsistencies (if you check Nolasco's statline from last year, he had tons of great starts, but other starts he just bombed), and the other has been phenomenal early on in his career, but suffered an injury most pitchers don't ever fully recover from. Obviously Nolasco is a much safer bet to succeed than Anibal this year, I was responding more to the fact that everybody seems to consider him an automatic Cy Young candidate for next year and completely ignore last years numbers for him. People need to find a happy median with him (I'm expecting a high 3 ERA this year, which would be fantastic).

He may not be a make or break pitcher like Sanchez, however nothing is guaranteed with a pitcher coming off a very rocky season. And learn some respect, by the way.

That was definitely a rude comment. I do, though, agree that it was maybe a poor choice of words about Nolasco and Sanchez. Clearly, there are and should be greater expectation for Ricky for 2010.
April 3, 201016 yr Haha at least it's a semi-ass move instead of a full ass move There should be greater expectations for Nolasco but anybody who thinks he is a sure bet has a chance of being upset. Obviously I hope for the best but judging last season for him you really gotta hope he doesn't pitch a roller coaster. Like I said above, I feel that Johnson is our only guarantee in the rotation.
