Petersen back to NOLA, Hayes promoted

Does seem odd at first. One of our catchers must be a bit bruised up or something?

Yeah, thats what I thought as well. Out of anybody to bring up right now, I thought it would have been Doug Mientkiewicz

a third catcher does allow them to pinch hit with paulino, and still have a "catcher" in case of emergencies... other than that i dont get it

I think is just to make Baker the lefty pinch hitter. But it's not like he's swinging a great bat.

I think this is only temporary. It allows Baker or Paulino to pinch hit when they don't start at catcher. I have a feeling that Hayes will only be with the Marlins for a couple of days so that Mientiewicz can get a couple of more games in AAA before getting called up.

also i think the fact that paulino started against a righty yesterday shows that fredi may be losing some confidence in baker who is really struggling right now at the plate.

The pinch hitting need has to be the answer to why another catcher. Fredi apparently has wanted to pinch hit with Paulino or Baker more often than with an extra fielder. But why Hayes? I'm not so clear on that.

Paulino started because it was a day game after a night game. This is consistent with what they have done since the platoon began. If Fredi had lost confidence in Baker he wouldn't have run him up there against Marmol. He hit him because Baker homered off him at Wrigley last year.

It's a bit weird but the answer is obvious, it allows Bake and Paulino to PH.

Also Bake's been getting some good hacks lately, I think he's turning it back around.

EDIT: Also, Paulino started because it was a day game after a night game. Standard operation procedures.

EDIT2: Seminole beat me to it.

Yes, that's the reason.

Also since Peterson came up, Coghlan began to have better AB's, thus making the extra left-handed outfielder less of a concern. Peterson is a better long-term prospect and he could use some extra PA's in the minors, as well.

I would be more accepting of this if Hayes weren't putting up a .220/.254/.322 line in AAA. I would rather the Marlins find a better pinch hitter (someone better than a Lamb/Barden/Petersen type) who can actually hit decently and take some of the pressure off of Paulino.

It's a shame that the front office didn't make the effort to acquire a LH bat as so many people here were suggesting in the offseason. The Marlins could really use a Luis Gonzalez type of player now.

Is there a chance it's more of a defensive minded move?

Doubt it. I'd be surprised to see much of Heyes at all.

I'm sure some people here will see it that way, though.

Not sure what that's suppose to mean but ok. Fredi has said he wants to see an improvement in defense. You never know he could do the gaby sanchez Wes helms move at catcher. BTW I really hate barden hitting in the 2 hole tonight and gaby 7th. Makes no sense

Bryan Petersen will have to wait a little bit longer to play at Sun Life Stadium.

The 24-year-old was optioned back to Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday. Petersen made his Marlins debut and recorded his first Major League hit on May 7. It would be the only hit he would get in his short stay in the big leagues as Petersen went 1-for-9 over his five-game stay.

Brett Hayes will take Petersen’s spot on the 25-man roster. The 26-year-old was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday and can provide depth at catcher and first base. He was batting .220 with one home run and five RBI for the Zephyrs.

Hayes was in New Orleans when he got the call around 10 PM Wednesday night after the Zephyrs finished hosting the Fresno Grizzlies.

“I was there for a couple of days and was supposed to spend six more days at home but I’d rather be here than New Orleans, Hayes said.

Most teams do not carry three catchers this early in the season. Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez explained the reasoning behind the roster move.

“We looked at the schedule and we’ve got three out of four left-handers in this series, Gonzalez said. “We’ve got Santana, Perez, a right-hander and the Niese on Sunday. We thought we added a right-handed bat that kind of frees up Baker a little bit to pinch hit.

Baker, who has been in a bit of a slump lately, is open to a bigger pinch hitting role now that Hayes has joined the team.

“I think in this situation now that Petersen’s down, in games that I don’t play, I think I can come off the bench and hit now, Baker said. “It kind of unties Fredi’s hands a little bit on who he can use and who he can’t use."

Ronny Paulino is normally the Marlins catcher against left-handed pitchers but with three lefties in four days, Hayes could possibly get a start. While Florida’s manager would not commit to that, he is certain that Hayes is a positive addition to the ballclub.

“I can’t tell you if we’re going to start Hayes or not but at least it gives us a little flexibility to use those guys as pinch hitters, Gonzalez said. “I think it also adds a little strength to our bench. Hayes is a guy that can play a couple different positions. He can play left field and a little bit of first base.

Hayes has been in the Majors before, hitting .273 with a double, a home run and two RBI in 14 games last season for the Marlins.

Hayes is the better defensive catcher. His problem earning a job out of ST, or call ups, has always been his bat. But the reason is for PH opportunities. And it's no surprise Peterson was the choice to be sent down. I said a day or two ago that I figured it was going to happen soon.
