Who is that? Sorry, Im new to Marlins players. But I have offically caught the bug and I LOVE BASEBALL. Can anyone explain to me a particular play? When a batter gets a third strike and swings all the way around and then attempts to run, but the catcher tags them out, why do they attempt to run? I thought if it's three strikes your out? Why do they get the chance to make it to first base?

That only happens if the catcher drops the ball after the third strike... the batter gets the opportunity to run to first because its as if the catcher made an error and as if the batter gets a chance to steal first. If you can make it before the catcher gets the ball and either tags u or throws to first, u get to stay on first. Now just to clarify, its not an error on the catcher and its not a stolen base for the hitter... I just describe if that way cause the concept is easier to explain that way. Hope that helps!

 

One last thing... if the hitter gets to first, an interesting thing happens as the pitcher has to actually record more than three outs in the inning. Here's why... if the batter makes it to first, no out is recorded BUT the pitcher is still credited with the strikeout. So the pitcher gets that one strikeout yet still has to get three more outs... thus he essentially had to get four outs in the inning... and actually, if this happened with more batters in the inning... a pitcher could conceivably have to get 6 or more outs in an inning, though im pretty sure thats never happened, its possible.
