Sosa? This seemingly makes no sense so heres my take...

Sosa is up only for 3-4 days until Nate's next scheduled start which is Sunday, I expect Sosa to be sent down Saturday and either Volstad or West up for Sunday... You gotta believe that Sosa is only here as an extra bullpen arm for a few days.

At first blush Sosa is a :banghead but when you look at his recent appearances as a reliever mostly one inning stints, one or two longer, there's an awful lot of goose eggs there and a 2.61 ERA as a reliever overall.

You have to keep your fingers crossed that he is in fact headed for the bullpen based on his work in NOLA but that still leaves a spot in the rotation to fill.

On the otherhand they don't need their fifth starter for another four or five days so they have time to pad the BP with an extra guy while they decide who to insert in the starting five.

Nate Robertson has been designated for assginment

Brett Hayes has been placed on 15-day DL with left wrist contusion

Brad Davis and Jorge Sosa have been promoted

Dvais looks good stat wise in AAA. Batting avg, hr's, and rbi's wise at least.

Barden is batting .429  in AAA? I thought he was gone.

They routed someone in the last couple of days, I forget what team and everyone and their brother it seemed walked away with two or three hits each, including Barden. It does go to show you that some guys need to play everyday too and coming in off the bench in a pinch-hitting role is not as easy as it sounds. Half a season of trying and underachieving says to me he's one of those guys who just isn't cut out for it.

I looked at his minor league stats over the years and he had some good years.

I don't see Robertson clearing waivers.

I think there's a better than 50% chance you're correct especially if the acquiring team has a plan to use him in the pen.

This could also be a roster (clearing) move as much as anything else.

I would put this at about 99%.

This costs a contender nothing to get a presumably competent lefty in the bullpen. I don't expect to get anything significant back, but I do see the team getting at least a Jay Voss prospect type back.

And Volstad has to be coming up in a few days. West still needs the innings to rebuild his arm strength.

You never know. Sosa could have a turn around like Veres. Unlikely, but maybe possible.

I wonder if there was completely no interest in Nate when Beinfest worked the phones, presumably last night, and decided that having him around in the bigs is just someone taking a roster spot that could otherwise be used better, so down he goes, with the hope that since no one was "interested" in a trade, no one will pick him up.

Why buy the cow when the milk is free? Calling around to move Robertson probably happened days if not weeks ago and every GM knew this was coming. Wait a few days and with a little luck you can have him for free, and if you're really lucky you can be in a position to sign him to a minor league contract so you don't have to burn a roster spot. the worst that happens is you give up a B prospect to go to the head of the line.

It's cruel but that's how it works.
