August 2, 201015 yr The Marlins are playing better, but like every year they already dug themselves a huge hole before they do it.
August 2, 201015 yr JJ was bound to have a bad run of things, I just hope this sort of thing doesn't linger. I also hope he can get an umpire who is willing to call strikes, as he's been the victim of poor umpiring behind the plate. Just think, we were a couple of breaks away from being 7-0 on this road trip. This team is playing really well as of late, and I'm really excited for both the rest of the season and next season. LoMo will get more work in left, JJ will snap out of it, and the bullpen might finally have found a semblance of stability. The day I give up on this season is the day our magic number hits 0.
August 2, 201015 yr Could have been a great road trip but JJ threw two stinkers. His first start of the road trip was a 7 IP, 3 ER start. I wish we had more "stinkers" like that. This comment is more appropriate. This could be one of the worst teams in baseball if not for Josh Johnson going out and pitching once every five days. Makes a lot more sense than what you said.
August 2, 201015 yr The umpires today sucked, as well. Yes they did. That play at second wasn't even close. And the strike zone sucked, as well. It sucked for the pitchers through 6 innings, and then from the 7th inning on, it seemed like the Padres relievers were getting all the corners. Strike zone sucked all series. First game was a disgrace.
August 2, 201015 yr Could have been a great road trip but JJ threw two stinkers. 7 innings, 3 runs = Stinker. His performance in that game was way better than your performance in that post.
August 2, 201015 yr Could have been a great road trip but JJ threw two stinkers. You sir have set a new standard for stupid statements on this board

The "victim of poor umpiring behind the plate" this year and last year many times has been Volstad big time. Johnson had an off day hes human. It would have been worse but they cut down a runner at home to save a run. Johnsons still one of the top three starters in the game. We need to win these series coming up.
August 2, 201015 yr This is just a mediocre baseball team. Pains me to say it but too many things are off. Hanley just hasn't really been himself this year and every facet of the game has been wildly inconsistent. The last few seasons have been such a tease. We are still in it which is nice but we've got to start winning nore games like today. Gaby can't be swinging at the first pitch in tHat situation. Mediocre teams dont take 2 of 3 from the best team in the NL. They also don't split series against the 2nd best team in the NL. Neither do they win all the other series since the ASB. I don't think the marlins are a real playoff team playing normally, but they are on fire right now. The marlins are not a mediocre team. They almost come back against Bell in the 9th. The marlins are actually playing baseball now when before they were just going through the motions. I don't expect them to make the post season, but I BELIEVE. DUM. Sample size. Mediocre teams are 1 game over .500. 2010 Marlins = mediocre.

Hate to see what teams like the Pirates and Royals and Orioles are called.
August 2, 201015 yr I remember last year when the marlins were going through an important stretch JJ wasn't as sharp as he was earlier in the season, starting in Houston. hope it's not the same thing
August 2, 201015 yr JJ sort of tired out at the end of last season and his numbers went up from the 1st half to the 2nd half.. I hope that's not what's happening with him now and this is just a little bump on the road of what is the awesomeness of JJ.

Hate to see what teams like the Pirates and Royals and Orioles are called. Do you know what "mediocre" means? me·di·o·cre   /ˌmidiˈoʊkər/ Show Spelled[mee-dee-oh-ker] –adjective 1. of only ordinary or moderate quality; neither good nor bad; barely adequate. 2.rather poor or inferior. While I'll give you that the first definition can be used for "average,' it is also used alot in its second definition. I would even say that in today's lexicon, it has become synonymous with bad, with that second definition. If you tell a friend that a film was mediocre, you aren't recommending the film to them, you aren't indicating that the film was ordinary or moderate in quality, you are saying it was poor. I have heard its use as the second definition way more than I have heard its use in the context of the first. At least, it has taken on more of the negativity of the second than the "meh" quality of the first. Granted, maybe DC meant it in that way, of "moderate quality," (EDIT: And I apologize if it seemed like I was jumping down his throat), but, to me, it is more commonly used to denote poorness. At least, that's how I have always heard it used.
August 3, 201015 yr Whenever there is a question, it's best to look at the etymology of the word. "Mediocre" comes from the Latin "mediocris" meaning "halfway" up something. Hence, in English the word means "second rate," about average, or inferior to something. The first definition (which I don't quite understand why you gloss over it) is what is most commonly found in dictionaries, because it's most consistent with the Latin derivation. The second one you provide is correct but more open ended. Something could be "inferior" to or "rather poor" in comparison to something of impeccable quality (Braves, Giants, Padres), but it doesn't necessarily mean it's below average. This is why the word mediocre has a negative connotation; it essentially acknowledges that something is second rate to something better, but not necessarily among the worst of a sample. DC's usage is consistent with what I've seen professionally and academically. I wouldn't give much credibility to how you observe the word being used on the street.
August 3, 201015 yr I can only go with what I have observed and seen other people use. I am not an etymologist, so I am usually not looking for anything outside of how I see people and literature I have read seems to use it. Y'know, on the mean streets of Boca So, that's why I read it more as the second defintion to me, being negative (though, as you said, it is valid but open to interpretation. So, I was merely saying, while ome may look at the glass half empty, saying we are mediocre compared to the Braves et al, you can also look at the glass as half full and say we are a good team when we are compared to the Pirates et al) Anyways, now I know mediocre can used to mean average. It goes into the knowledge bank.
August 3, 201015 yr It is a negative a term even under proper usage, though. If you are saying something isn't is first rate or average, you are still calling it inferior. That doesn't mean it's "below average," which is what teams like the Orioles or Pirates are. I'm not an etymologist or linguist, either, but I've seen it enough in print to have an opinion.
August 3, 201015 yr Eh, I will admit I probably shouldn't have said we aren't mediocre and then said we are average, since they mean the same thing. But I will stand by my assessment that mediocre is too "negative" of a term to use when describing this team, because they are teams worse off than us (and again, if mediocre is a comparison term, then we can turn around and say the Marlins are a stupendous team when compared to Pirates et al) Again, that's my formed opinion. Your mileage may vary. So yeah, back on topic, that game was killer!
