Posted August 31, 201014 yr Cameron Maybin is surprising me since he has been called up. what do you guys think?
August 31, 201014 yr Cam does this every year. He's Mr. late August/September. I'll make my final judgments on Maybin next season.
August 31, 201014 yr I think he's playing at a decent level. He hasn't drawn a walk, though. The plate discipline will need to come along at some point, but I want to see him getting the base hits he's getting. Its important for a young player to establish himself at the plate and build on it. I'd rather see a guy like Maybin batting .300 even if his OBP isn't great because we really need to have him be able to hit major league pitching. Maybin has looked nice so far and this is his first real hot streak in the majors since 2008. But that should teach us a lesson that a couple hot weeks doesn't mean a career. No matter how Maybin finishes up the year, I will still be worried about him getting out of the gate in 2011. If he bats over .300 in a month and a half of this year, I'll feel a lot less worried though. Unlike 2008, there is more of a scouting report on Maybin and I'd like to think he's getting these hits with the pitchers attacking him to try and take advantage of his weaknesses.
August 31, 201014 yr When he stops making errors in the outfield he'll impress me more! He is showing promise with his bat, but he's done this the last couple of seasons.
August 31, 201014 yr Maybin's swing looks much better. Evidently his shoulder problems was inhibiting his batting mechanics earlier. He will be OK with the bat. Now needs some walks, some base stealing and some better defense.
August 31, 201014 yr He's not a leadoff hitter. I fear we will do to Maybin what the Cubs did to Corey Patterson... try to make him something he is not.

Do you suppose he's a LaRussa-type 9th hitter, then? No I think he'd be a fine #7 hitter in the lineup. Just because he is fast doesn't mean we have to make him into some sort of leadoff hitter or larussa 2nd leadoff hitter.

Just because he is fast doesn't mean we have to make him into some sort of leadoff hitter or larussa 2nd leadoff hitter. Why would seemingly disregard his ability to tear around the bases, then? I realize he doesn't have to be a lead-off type hitter, but I doubt we'll have somebody fleet of foot at the 6th position. Also, suppose he does get on base, chances are that the inning will stall once 8th hitter and pitcher come up, further wasting one of the greater aspects of Maybin's game. This is all conjecture on my end, of course.

This is all conjecture on my end, of course. You're actually right. At least my opinion is the same, anyway. I don't see how Maybin's skills are more valuable hitting 7th than they are hitting 1st or even 9th, if he doesn't get on base enough as his career progresses.
August 31, 201014 yr His speed at any part of the order will be a positive for the team. Just because he isn't a leadoff hitter doesn't mean he can't do damage on the bases. Watching the cubs completely mess up Patterson's career is what sticks out in my mind. He was a free swinger and they tried to make him in to a contract hitter/leadoff hitter.. which he wasn't. He should have been a #6-7 hitter who could still you bases. They tried to get him to be a leadoff hitter, which completely messed with his head and we all saw what happened to him. Instead of trying to retool him, they need to work with what hey got and just let the kid do his thing. If anything, boner would be your #9 hitter ( as erick has mentioned before).. but who really does that beside LaRussa? My lineup (keep in mind, i want uggla back but this is what i see w/o him): 3B Coghlan LF Morrison SS Hanley RF Stanton 1B Gaby CF Maybin C Baker P Pitcher 2B Bonifacio
August 31, 201014 yr If he doesn't pan out as a leadoff hitter which I don't see him doing it's fine because we have a great leadoff hitter in Coghlan. For me I'd rather have Maybin 8th or 9th rather then 7th. I love the lineup of Coghlan Logan Hanley Uggla Stanton Gaby Baker/Paulino Maybin/Pitcher Pitcher/Maybin

September 1, 201014 yr Hitting-wise, I'm not concerned with Maybin right now. Defensively, he makes me nervous i agree but only when he is coming in on the ball. He does tend to be overly aggressive at times when he should be holding back and letting it drop. But I also think if the other OFers get themselves into position to back him up it is a non issue. A single is a single. The only drawback to it would be reinjuring that shoulder on the dive.
