I don't envy Beinfest... there are some pretty tough decisions that are going to have to be made.

 

 

Not baseball-wise. Fan-wise, yes. Trading a couple of fan favs, Baker and Gaby. But that could very well be the means to tweak that pen and it would improve the defense. Admin fell just short of outright saying Gaby is on the serious trading block, but..... And let's remember, Gaby was nothing but a stopgap until Logan's bat was ready. It's ready. Before anybody jumps, I'm not anti-Gaby. I'm pro-Logan. Is Logan untradeable? No. Should he be compared to Stanton? Hell no. But he is our 1B. And he will be a very good one. Offensively and defensively.

 

He didn't say much about Baker, but it's just a feeling I have. And Admin's limited comments on Paulino left me feeling a little better he will be back. Ronny did better than just fine until Fredi and company outright wore him down. Him with Hayes/Davis would be acceptable.

 

I think what Beinfest is saying is that Matt is going to get his shot at 3B this ST. Which simply means the job isn't going to be handed to Cogs and we basically make the same mistake as we did in ST of '09 at 1B, although with a bit of a twist. One of them will have to earn it. Namely Matt, but we have a very reasonable 3B in any case without hurting us elsewhere. If Matt's ready, fine. Cogs moves back to LF and we don't lose that bat. But either at 3B and Logan at 1B greatly improves our IF defense. It just depends on the developement of Matt's bat.

 

Bring in a real, proven closer and a lefty or two for the pen and I think the other guys out there fill in just fine. Also leaves us with a couple guys for emergency starts. Whether they are on this roster or on the AAA roster is irrelevant.

 

I was surprised with Davis. I was afraid after Ronny there was this HUGE hole as far as catchers so I was pleasantly surprised we had someone who could actually do something other than a back stop for balls to bounce off of. But I got the impression Beinfest was meh about the replacements. And personally I thought Ronny was enough of an embarassment that the FO/Loria/Samson wouldn't want him around next year.

I find it odd that Beinfest says Volstad already has a rotation spot next year.

I'm not a big Volstad fan, but a 24 year old who threw 175 innings and finished with a 12-9 record/4.58 ERA is guaranteed a rotation spot in a lot of rotations in baseball. It's not surprising at all that Beinfest said that. Volstad was probably on the bubble earlier in the year, but he had a nice finish to the season to secure a rotation spot next year.

I started to type out my argument to this but I'm beginning to weaken. I've just been so pleased with Gaby's season, and I hate the idea of taking cheap young talent and shipping it off immediately, but I suppose defensively it may be the only way to get the pieces in order. I still hate Coghlan in left field though. And I'd take Gaby's bat over Coghlan's. I know it wasn't a full season but the 2010 version of Chris Coghlan doesn't do us much good.

Both were flukes.

He overachieved in 2009, and underachieved in 2010.

as a matter of fact, i think this domiguez thing may signal the end of the line for cameron maybin.

 

if jayson werth can play center field, mike stanton can play center field.

 

however, as of right now i absolutely do not agree with morrison or stanton being traded. there is absolutely no point at all.

 

He could but I doubt he does. Maybin will probably be the starter going into next season, probably batting 7th or 8th.

This is a gut reaction and may make no sense when it comes to positions, but I would rather trade Maybin and leave Gaby, Lomo, Cogs, Stanton & Uggz alone. Sorry but I don't see all the love for Maybin. For supposedly all the upside Maybin was suppose to bring, I'm meh.

i know where you guys are coming from here, and yes Stanton could play CF in a pinch, but Maybin is still going to cover more ground out there. Besides if Stanton goes to CF who plays in right?

 

LoMo-Stanton-Coghlan, or something?? That's frighteningly bad.

 

There is no "love" for Maybin right now so I don't know what you're getting at. People do think he has room to improve (i.e. has a higher ceiling than what he's doing now) and he's the best suited to play center field for us, that's about it. Most of our outfield options aren't ideal ones, except for Stanton. We just have to find the least problematic way to find a fit out there.

Sorry, I think he has had enough time. Like 3 or 4 partial seasons to prove himself and I don't think he's proved much. And I don't think he still really knows how to place CF and there's no excuse he has been tried at numerous positions.

Boni/Cousins is at least as good as Maybin in CF.

 

And Maybin has no trade value unless someone really needs a AAA centerfielder.

until matt dominguez proves that he can rake at AA and AAA, there is no reason to move any one right now.
