Admin Beinfest: "Let's face it, Dominguez is coming"

Featured Replies

And why was he blowing the saves?...maybe it was overusing his changeup? As indicated by Edwin amongst others

Statistically, no.

When he was saving games, he was using his changeup the same way.

Not all of the HR's/big hits he gave up were on his changeup. There were many on his fastball. Heck, 2 of the big HR's he allowed were on sliders, I believe (1 to Rowand, 1 to McCann).

His changeup is far and away the best pitch he has.

How did Clay Hensley go 7 for 7 in save opportunities this month/have a great year overall? It had more to do with his "girly" changeups/curveballs than it did with his "ballsy" fastball.

I hope the next time Matty D is making with the love, he says "Let's Face it, Dominguez is coming".

That might be too raunchy.

Morrison kinda outperformed Barton ...He had a higher average Higher SLG and much higher OPS...very similar OBP

I believe my exact quote was: "Daric Barton with some more power."

If you're going to use #'s to compare the guys you compared Morrison with; I'm not sure how you came up with some of the guys you listed because, statistically, the comparisons aren't very good.

Thats always been ur problem not all in baseball is stats...There will be a point when you see somebody hit and you will say" Damn that guys approach at the plate reminds me of Hanley Ramirez or Miguel Cabrera" and it will not take a stat sheet for you to reach that conclusion. That is the beauty of baseball

But here's the problem with that.

Emilio Bonifacio is a switch hitting second baseman with no power who slaps at the ball, bunts a lot and is really fast.

Luis Castillo was all of those things as well.

More than a few people on this board compared him to Luis Castillo.

However, the best thing Castillo did was draw walks and not strike out. Bonifacio is, at best, bad at those things.

So, yeah, just watching him, he might look like Luis and draw comparisons based on that. But it's a shallow comparison. Stats allow you to see the subtleties in a player's game.

I do not disagree with you at alll...I like stats myself . There is a balance however some things you see may not appear on the stats and some things you may not see may actually do...Stats are just tools for info

The majority of things can be statistically found, especially in this day and age.

Well Morrison isnt as important as Stanton, but wed need to some incredible deal to trade him. Morrison isnt untouchable, but hes pretty close to it. I for one was pretty worn out from the Ross, Young Uggla, Jacobs, Helms and Cantu era of not thinking in the batters box and swinging away. Morrison is the most intelligent hitter on the team and he gets on base A TON. We need guys like him and Coghlan in the lineup. Gaby to me is similar to a guy like Cantu and tends to be very aggressive up there. Not that I dont like that but given hes a liability defensively and older Id rather see him go.

We arent gonna trade Morrison or Stanton. And i think itd be kind of foolish to get rid of coghlan. That means if anything Gaby is the odd man out. Unless ur looking for a lineup perspective in which case we need Gaby's RBIs. But even still, its too early to call up Dominguez. He might be ready soon, but as good as he may be at 3rd it doesnt take away from Uggla's struggling at second (which in my mind is our biggest defensive problem.)

This why I would say Morrison is very important for the Marlins...He is a left-handed hitter who hits lefties as well as righties. Those types of hitters in a lineup are pure gold. There are as rare as pure power hitters like Stanton in baseball. I would consider him every bit as untouchable as Stanton for that reason alone

Not saying he's going to be terrible against lefties, but Morrison's success against lefties was rather fluky this year.

His K/BB ratio was nice (15 BB/17 K), but he only had 89 plate appearances against lefties, and he had an unsustainable .446 .BABIP against them. That's just an aberration, based on a small sample.

I could be wrong on this, but I believe he wasn't all that great against lefties in the minor leagues. At least, I remember people like Nny saying that he might be forced to play a platoon role with Gaby about a year ago, if he didn't improve against lefties.

Either way, I highly doubt he'll be this impressive against lefties, moving forward.

The fact that he's a left-handed bat though is nice because our lineup is full of righties, and thus struggled against right-handed pitching this year.

I personally want to keep them all. And as much as I love Coghlan, I'd move him before Sanchez and LoMo.

To be honest, I agree with this statement. Especially if the plan is to keep Uggla, long-term.

I find it odd that Beinfest says Volstad already has a rotation spot next year.

As a number 5 pitcher, I don't see why not.

I find it odd that Beinfest says Volstad already has a rotation spot next year.

I would have been surprised if he had said otherwise, to be honest.

I don't envy Beinfest... there are some pretty tough decisions that are going to have to be made.

Not baseball-wise. Fan-wise, yes. Trading a couple of fan favs, Baker and Gaby. But that could very well be the means to tweak that pen and it would improve the defense. Admin fell just short of outright saying Gaby is on the serious trading block, but..... And let's remember, Gaby was nothing but a stopgap until Logan's bat was ready. It's ready. Before anybody jumps, I'm not anti-Gaby. I'm pro-Logan. Is Logan untradeable? No. Should he be compared to Stanton? Hell no. But he is our 1B. And he will be a very good one. Offensively and defensively.

He didn't say much about Baker, but it's just a feeling I have. And Admin's limited comments on Paulino left me feeling a little better he will be back. Ronny did better than just fine until Fredi and company outright wore him down. Him with Hayes/Davis would be acceptable.

I think what Beinfest is saying is that Matt is going to get his shot at 3B this ST. Which simply means the job isn't going to be handed to Cogs and we basically make the same mistake as we did in ST of '09 at 1B, although with a bit of a twist. One of them will have to earn it. Namely Matt, but we have a very reasonable 3B in any case without hurting us elsewhere. If Matt's ready, fine. Cogs moves back to LF and we don't lose that bat. But either at 3B and Logan at 1B greatly improves our IF defense. It just depends on the developement of Matt's bat.

Bring in a real, proven closer and a lefty or two for the pen and I think the other guys out there fill in just fine. Also leaves us with a couple guys for emergency starts. Whether they are on this roster or on the AAA roster is irrelevant.

I think if we are to trade someone it will be Gaby. His trade value is the highest it will be after a solid rookie year. However you have to remember it took him quite a while to reach the Majors and the organisation passed on giving him a shot in the past when people here thought he was the most logical option. So they could well capitalise on his good year by moving him, if indeed they do want Dominguez in our Opening Day lineup.

You have to be kidding. Stanton could be two notches above Morrison right now. Morrison is a really good hitter, but he doesn't hit for power and naturally, will play a less demanding position at 1B. I know he gets on-base alot and that is kinda rare in this league, but his value at 1B would only be average. Stanton OBP isn't nearly as good, but the dude is still 20 years old. He will improve as time goes. One of Logan knocks though is that he doesn't have good baserunning skills, and has poor speed. Stanton has very good speed (though he doesn't utilize it much) and defense...Logan is good at his natural positon, but Stanton is a FREAK defensively. 8th in the league in defensive WAR (keep in mind he only played in about 98 games) and is 3rd among RFs in UZR/150, higher than Heywards.

All in all. it's not close. Stanton has generational talent potential. Bonds, Griffey, AROD, Pujols-type. Even better than our once beloved Miguelito.

I find it odd that Beinfest says Volstad already has a rotation spot next year.

I don't.....Voly did pretty well down the stretch and he is still cheap next year isn't he ?

It was established long ago that you're anti-Gaby. :p

I started to type out my argument to this but I'm beginning to weaken. I've just been so pleased with Gaby's season, and I hate the idea of taking cheap young talent and shipping it off immediately, but I suppose defensively it may be the only way to get the pieces in order. I still hate Coghlan in left field though. And I'd take Gaby's bat over Coghlan's. I know it wasn't a full season but the 2010 version of Chris Coghlan doesn't do us much good.

Nope, I think I'm still going to be stubborn about this for a while....

as a matter of fact, i think this domiguez thing may signal the end of the line for cameron maybin.

if jayson werth can play center field, mike stanton can play center field.

however, as of right now i absolutely do not agree with morrison or stanton being traded. there is absolutely no point at all.

He could but I doubt he does. Maybin will probably be the starter going into next season, probably batting 7th or 8th.

This is a gut reaction and may make no sense when it comes to positions, but I would rather trade Maybin and leave Gaby, Lomo, Cogs, Stanton & Uggz alone. Sorry but I don't see all the love for Maybin. For supposedly all the upside Maybin was suppose to bring, I'm meh.

thats what im saying. right now all the guys mentioned deserve to be on the team....maybin does not.

i know where you guys are coming from here, and yes Stanton could play CF in a pinch, but Maybin is still going to cover more ground out there. Besides if Stanton goes to CF who plays in right?

LoMo-Stanton-Coghlan, or something?? That's frighteningly bad.

There is no "love" for Maybin right now so I don't know what you're getting at. People do think he has room to improve (i.e. has a higher ceiling than what he's doing now) and he's the best suited to play center field for us, that's about it. Most of our outfield options aren't ideal ones, except for Stanton. We just have to find the least problematic way to find a fit out there.

let's give Maybin a full season.

It really does sound like the Marlins are going to trade Gaby, but who knows.. you guys bring up some valid points and it's going to be interesting to see what happens this offseason. I can't wait for 2011 that's for sure, but I would be very upset if Logan was traded and not here. I doubt the Marlins will trade Logan though but he can't stay in left field..I mean sure, he could get better there, but he's still very shakey out there. All I know is..2011, the Marlins need Justis! (I just wanted to throw that in ha :p )

If Maybin is traded, Stanton won't be going to CF. More than likely, he'd stay in RF, and Bonifacio would play CF.

However, I hope that doesn't happen. I think Maybin gets one last chance in 2011 to either stick with the team long-term, or raise his trade value, at the very least. He should be better than what he's done so far in the big leagues.
