How does a split minor and major contract work?

Minor league salary while in minors, major league one while in majors. Dollar amounts weren't announced.

To add to this:

If somebody signs a major league contract, they must be added to the 40 man roster, and they'll make however much they signed for.

If somebody signs a minor league contract, they do not have to be added to the 40 man roster; However, if they are added to the 40 and called up to the majors, they will make the minimum.

By signing a split contract, the player does not have to be added to the 40 man roster, but in the majors he will make more then the minimum. So for the Marlins, this clear a roster spot for the offseason. For Murphy, he makes more money while he's in the majors.

In essence, he's getting a two-way contract for those who follow hockey as well.

Good explanation. Answered every question I had, plus. And a good signing.
