Is anyone getting nervous about our offense ?

Featured Replies

I was disappointed when Stanton got injured because he wouldn't get max at-bats this spring. Besides that, I don't see anything to worry about this early in spring.

Well its not gotten a lot better lately. Of course no Stanton yet, but what is with Hanley ? Anyone getting nervous ?

What's wrong with Hanley? .375/.444/.458 is not great now?

The starters have hit the ball fairly well. Not that it matters. Spring Training results mean very little.

If you're going to worry about something right now, I'd be more worried about our starting pitching. JJ has struggled (although that doesn't worry me at all). Nolasco, Anibal, and Vazquez all seem to have nagging injuries at this point which sucks the most because they might be behind schedule once the season starts. Volstad doesn't convince me at all (has struggled), and Sanabia/West have not pitched well, at all. Sanabia seems to be well on his way to going on the disabled list with all the elbow stuff coming out every now and then. I don't like the way the Marlins have handled Sanabia.

The pitching, in general, has been worse than the hitting, so I'm not sure why you're placing an emphasis on the offense.

Also, the most concering thing is the fact that our defense is still mediocre.

Sorry Erick, I guess I should have made it clearer with my Hanley remark. Its about his defense, and his attitude, seems like the old Hanley out there not the leader he claims he was going to be. The offense does worry me, because I believe the pitching will come around, but we're still not scoring a lot of runs, and its getting me worried. I didn't think they would miss Uggla this much, but it seems this team has lost its heart. I know a lot of people here didn't think Uggla was worth that much, but I think he was worth a lot more to this team, than just what he did at the plate. He was the heart & soul of the team, and that looks like it has been ripped out and nothing has filled that vacuum yet.

Lost its heart? Please tell me you're joking. They haven't even played a game as a full team yet.

I have seen a lot of teams play this preseason. Ours looks more lifeless than most. I have seen teams come back from being behind, and ones win close hard fought games. Something I have yet to see from either our full squad or in any of the split squads. They just look a lot like they are going through the motions. Its two weeks to opening night, time to start getting the eye of the tiger.

And you can't completely disregard spring training games. They can be an arbiter of the future. The vibe I am getting so far is, we could be at best a 70 win team.

lol

Not that I'm too bothered, but we are last in the league in HR with 6, whereas Arizona has already amassed 28.....

Wow! AND they traded Reynolds during the offseason.

I hope you think its funny if we are 20-40 by mid-June.. The way they are playing right now thats not out of the realm of possibilities.

No, it's funny because you're basing what they'll do in the regular season off ST results.

No I'm basing it off the effort my eyes are seeing. Lazy efforts so far from Hanley and he is the team leader ? Not much of an upgrade in the defensive efforts by all of the infielders....You think they can just turn on a switch and all of a sudden they play differently ? I don't buy it.

My opinion by the way is just as valid as anyone elses, so stop the condescending attitude please.

I'm worried about the defense, but it really has little to do with Spring Training. Spring Training doesn't matter unless major injuries occur.

Here's the records of the playoff teams from last season...

23-12 San Francisco Giants

13-15 New York Yankees

10-19 Texas Rangers

12-16 Cincinnati Reds

15-12 Philadelphia Phillies

17-12 Atlanta Braves

16-14 Minnesota Twins

20-8 Tampa Bay Rays

Oh, and Cleveland went 19-9 for what it's worth.

So you have some good records, you have some bad records. The World Series had a 23-12 team face a 10-19 team. Those records show just how random Spring Training performances really are.

As for the bolded statement...Defensively, Dominguez>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Cantu/Helms/Bonifacio, Infante>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Uggla, Buck>>>>>>>>>>>>Baker/Paulino, Stanton>>>>>>>>>Everybody, and considering how many bad routes and how awkward he looked out in CF, Coghlan could possibly be as good as Maybin in CF.

Don't go all "Our defense isn't better than last season". Perry Hill is one of the best defense coaches in baseball. He worked with our defense during some of the best times (in terms of defense) in Marlins history. Who cares what Spring Training shows, this team is better defensively than last year.

I don't think Coghlan has a chance to be as good as Maybin. I really expect Coghlan to be one of the worst Center Fielder's in baseball defensively.
