Posted July 22, 201113 yr It's obvious at this point that Volstad blows and is not going to get any better just running him out there every 5th day. He stagnated in his second year and has been at that exact point, performance wise, the last three years. I know that we don't have any blue chippers waiting in the wings, but if he were optioned after this or the next start, what guys could be called up to even make one or two starts?
July 22, 201113 yr Hand...let him pitch.  this. the kid has good stuff and can be a really good pitcher one day. oh and we have the same last name
July 22, 201113 yr I think the team can finish year with a winning record...but it goes up if Vol goes down & Hand comes up.
July 22, 201113 yr Author The responses It is time for the weekly "give up on the 24 year old" thread?  Ironic that it happens after every game where he starts out allowing 3+ runs and twice as many baserunners in the first inning.
July 22, 201113 yr Author I think the team can finish year with a winning record...but it goes up if Vol goes down & Hand comes up.  Sending a guy down who has a 5.68 ERA is not going to prevent us from finoshing .500. The only thing you get with him is the certainty that he is going to be pretty bad, which for some here is still better than the potential that somebody could be even worse.
July 23, 201113 yr May as well just let Hand finish the season in AA. At least give the guy a full year above single A in the minors. I think Sanabia once he gets healthy would be the first guy you'd look to if you wanted to replace a spot in the rotation. And then of course there's the Hensley idea.  We have no one else pitching worth a crap in the high minors and they're not making the playoffs anyway so it's not like Volstad is blocking anyone.

July 23, 201113 yr I don't think anyone's forgotten. But he's hurt. I know he's hurt, my response was in answer to the OP topic. Also we really have no one, this could be a bad team for a few years... meh. I just have the bad lingering feeling. We should take votes on when the first division title will be. Edit: This is my gloom and doom post of the day.
July 23, 201113 yr JJ should be coming back some day in the future, we can ship Volstad off then.  Who?

Loria cannot allow that to happen. If he does, and runs the team into the ground, and local support doesn't come, even with the new stadium, will MLB take measures to do a "McCort" on him ?
July 23, 201113 yr JJ should be coming back some day in the future, we can ship Volstad off then.  Seems forever ago that JJ was challenging for a no-hitter every start
July 23, 201113 yr If you think they need to send Volstad down at this point, the only options are Villanueva or Hand. When or if JJ gets back or Sanabia or West get healthy they might be an option, but as of right now he seems set, I also agree with the weekly Volstad thread, its a good thing Vazquez has pitched better
July 23, 201113 yr It is time for the weekly "give up on the 24 year old" thread?  There's a difference between being young and having talent, and being young with subpar pitches.
July 23, 201113 yr Volstad optioned to the minors. Maybe this will postpone his arbitration. http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/07/23/2328032/marlins-option-volstad-to-minors.html
July 24, 201113 yr "It's an arm-slot situation, where he needs to be more consistent," McKeon said. "He had a similar situation last year, and he came back and was lights out."Â Â Â He had a 4.32 ERA when he came back last year, hardly "lights out". Volstad is still young leave him in the minors till he learns how to pitch or get rid of him.
