July 25, 201114 yr The trade deadline is coming up, we need to get rid of Leo and try to get some young pitching prospects in return. I suppose Heath Bell is making this harder than one would like though, as he is probably in higher demand. Perhaps another team that loses out on the Heath Bell sweepstakes will over bid for a Leo Nunez. I'm going to be pissed if Leo is still here in August. We need to have done something with this season.
July 25, 201114 yr Author I wouldn't mind a legitimate hitter at 3B instead of just focusing in pitching. Thats true, although personally I prefer pitching over normal position players because I believe in the "pitching wins games" theory. I agree though who's to say Dominguez is going to work out.

Pitching may win games, but you still have to have competent offense. Except for Dominguez, we really don't have legitimate prospects anywhere in the upper minors. That's going to be a problem When it comes down to it, though, I'd like us to take the best value.
July 26, 201114 yr I'm not opposed to trading him, but you need to get a lot because he will be a type A free agent after 2012 (as long as he maintains getting saves) and will bring two draft pick compensation. Yea, he's going to make around $8 million the rest of this year and next year, and you'd have to pay each of those draft picks $1 million signing bonus, but that isn't a bad cost for say 90 innings of Leo and two top 50 draft picks. Our farm is bad, replenishing it would be a good thing. I'd move him if you get a top 100 level prospect in A+, or maybe a top 100-150 if in AA. It can be a backend guy, like where Coghlan and Gaby fell (just outside top 100), but they need to get a guy who has the potential to be a solid starting player in the major leagues to account for Leo's talents and potential draft pick compensation. This isn't a dump move. This is a, the Marlins are better suited with someone younger and can probably replace those bullpen innings with a collection of Ceda and Marinez next year move. What I'd do is the classic Beinfest move. We'll give you Leo and Dobbs/Infante (who every team would love as a bench throw in), but you give us that one prospect we want. Hammer/Olsen, Beckett/Lowell, Cabrera/Willis. It's a much smaller move than those later two, but you see the pattern. Throw in that second guy. Dobbs or Infante means nothing to this organization longterm. Get the guy you want. Don't worry about the ancillary pieces. Hopefully Heath Bell and/or Mike Adams goes sooner rather than later so Beinfest can really hammer the losers of that sweepstakes and see what kind of offers are out there.

Somebody else paid his signing bonus and has already given you a preview of what you might expect.
July 26, 201114 yr He's 3 saves behind the ML leader(and would be the leader by at least 5 saves if not for June) and we hate him. :lol Yup, the save is overrated.
July 26, 201114 yr I don't hate him, I just think he can bring value in return in excess of his value to the team.

The save is overrated, but some of the hate he gets is certainly undeserved. It could be worse; he's the best closer this team has had since Todd Jones, who was nothing more than a fluke here. I just want to trade him because I'd like to get SP prospect value in return (or cheaper value in positions of need). He had strong peripherals last year (better than this year actually), and there's very little to hate about his results this year. The perception that he allows a lot of baserunners is false.
July 26, 201114 yr For what it's worth, if my team was a contender and I was buying a closer at the deadline, I'd take Leo Nunez over Heath Bell right now.
July 26, 201114 yr Nothing wrong with trading from a position of strength when you've got holes to fill.
July 26, 201114 yr Author I don't hate him, I just think he can bring value in return in excess of his value to the team. Exactly, no one said they hated Nunez or didn't like his value. If I believed that I wouldn't have posted this thread, the fact that we can get high value in return should be enough for the Marlins to trade him. We have other relief pitchers capable of closing. Buster Olney just posted his video blog for tuesday and thinks that once one player goes at a position they will all start to go at a position, kinda like what happens in the NFL draft when a certain position is taken. I could see that happening as the losers are going to try and fill out before the trade deadline.

July 26, 201114 yr Author There is rumor that the Angels were going to put a deal together that involved Alberto Callaspo and Maicer Izturis. http://www.latimes.c...,3666489.story? It's all rumor but some interesting reads out there.

Then you thought wrong. He was actually the most similar we've had to Leo, in that he get a lot of saves when we were out of it in the standings, but whenever we had worked our way back in he managed to bring his worst.
July 27, 201114 yr The Phillies might need him...it would be good if we can get Vance Worley...just a thought
July 27, 201114 yr The Phillies might need him...it would be good if we can get Vance Worley...just a thought Worley is far more valuable to them right now than another reliever. They already have Madson, Lidge and Bastardo as potential closers.
August 2, 201114 yr Author He won't be here in the offseason we will make a trade. smh. :facepalm That being said he has been pretty good "numbers wise" this year only 4 blown saves, I know thats not great but what if our next closer is Kevin Gregg 2 *Gasp* ... I actually can't remember who was worse Nunez or Gregg or Pinto bean, thank God Pinto never closed games. Just a thought to be careful what you wish for.
