December 22, 201114 yr Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN Among the starters that the Marlins are considering: Joe Saunders. 212 IP, 3.69 ERA, 1.307 WHIP, 108 SO, 67 BB last season
December 22, 201114 yr He's better than Volstad, but two softie lefties in the rotation ? Not sure about that.
December 23, 201114 yr Joe Saunders > Volstad. It's just that there's no upside with him, and I'm pretty sure he'll get some sort of stupid contract.
December 23, 201114 yr Fluck it with all the top pitchers out now, go after prince. might as well just create a potent offense
December 23, 201114 yr Author carrer stats: Saunders - Volstad WHIP: 1.374 - 1.409 H/9: 9.5 - 9.5 HR/9: 1.1 - 1.1 BB/9: 2.9 - 3.1 SO/9: 5.0 - 5.8

Lets run him up to age 26... WHIP: 1.479 H/9: 10.1 HR/9: 1.0 BB/9: 3.2 SO/9: 6 Apples and oranges. Unless you think the one season wonderment of 2008 is certain to return because he wears the rainbow, I can't see wanting to give him anything to play here. I would rather use Volstad.
December 23, 201114 yr Joe Saunders has outperformed his peripherals, to be fair. And he's been in the big leagues long enough to suggest that's not all a fluke. Sort of like Buehrle, in that sense.
December 23, 201114 yr Author apples and oranges nothing. obviously this team is trying to win next year. ages are irrelevant.
December 23, 201114 yr apples and oranges nothing. obviously this team is trying to win next year. ages are irrelevant. Saunders has had 2 good seasons, the rest look like lower-end Volstad years. Last 3 seasons: WHIP: 1.395 H/9: 9.6 HR/9: 1.2 BB/9: 2.9 K/9:4.8 K/BB: 1.66 That is so similar to Volstad to make the differences as close to irrelevant as possible, inside the margins of difference generated by parks, defenses, and division. Volstad is cheap, Saunders would not be. Volstad has upside, Saunders does not. Even status quo, there would be almost no difference between the results.

I don't know what real upside you see in Volstad. Even if he turns out being effective it's pretty obvious he doesn't have the stuff or impeccable command to be a great pitcher.

He dominated in the AL his first full season with luck through a ludicrous babip before getting knocked around the second time around. He's nothing special
December 23, 201114 yr Well the real question behind this is what is happening with Chris Volstad? Are they looking to move him? BP? What?
December 23, 201114 yr Fluck it with all the top pitchers out now, go after prince. might as well just create a potent offense How many times does Admin Beinfest have to say they're not interested in Prince Fielder until people actually believe it?

He doesn't need to be a great pitcher. He needs to work that sinker and become a solid back-of-the-rotation guy who keeps the ball in the park and gets ground ball outs. Both of which have turned into problems after his great rookie year. I still have faith in him but would (obviously) open Oswalt into the rotation with open arms. I'd like to see Volstad be a setup man/spot starter though now that The Hopper's gone.
December 23, 201114 yr I hear Beinfest wants to go after Fielder. Let us pray... best possible route. puts another dominant bat in the lineup to make it among the best in the league, and solves the lack of trade piece issue for more pitching.

Actually, I believe it's been Samson saying that, not Beinfest.
