Fluck it with all the top pitchers out now, go after prince. might as well just create a potent offense

How many times does Admin Beinfest have to say they're not interested in Prince Fielder until people actually believe it?

Actually, I believe it's been Samson saying that, not Beinfest.

FO personnel in general. You know what I mean, though.

There's a difference between spending money and wasting it. Thus far, all players signed have been elite or still are. The current team should still be competitive and it may be wiser to wait for truly great pitchers than to overpay for mediocrity. A one year contract for an Oswalt is very sensible but the competition for that kind of bargain may be fierce.

Joe Saunders > Volstad.

It's just that there's no upside with him, and I'm pretty sure he'll get some sort of stupid contract.

upside is overrated.....ie, jeremy hermeida and mike jacobs....lets hold onto volstad so he can really stink up the joint

good point. I've gotta remember this for anytime "upside" is mentioned on here

Upside would be overrated if we weren't discussing a pitcher that would not be expected to improve upon the younger player's current performance. At least with the younger player he is cheaper and offers at least a chance to improve.

I don't think anyone is advocating using Volstand in lieu of Oswalt or Vasquez or trading for a better pitcher.

If his very good finish is an indication he will not really stink up the joint.

Stop overrating Volstad. He is what he is.

He's still 25. He's unlikely to become a top-of-the-rotation guy, but there are tons of pitchers who weren't even regulars in the ML at his age, let alone pitching at an elite level.

The finish in 09 wasnt that good, the finish in '10 was bogus only because of run support, only the finish this past year was definitely very good but with terrible run support. So it's only the one good year age 24 pitching year. Plenty of time to improve but he needs to show it now.

Not true. For one thing the terrible Marlins infield defense has killed the strong groundball pitcher in past years with Infante the only improvement this past year. Before Infante? Terrible. Our third basemen? What a joke. Mediocre fielding first baseman at best. His peripherals have improved a lot this year. Reyes will help him big time. Check Halladay and Carpenter histories for he is what he is at age 24. Our rotation is fine if Johnson isnt hurt and Nolasco earns his 9 MM
