April 9, 201214 yr Tomorrow the news networks and ESPN will probably be showing images of the protest, so this story has the potential to cause national embarrassment to the Marlins. Assuming anyone shows up for the protest. I guess you've never dealt with the Cuban community when they get pissed ? Remember Elian Gonzalez in 2000 ? lol! My family is Cuban and I grew up right in the middle of every protest that occurred in Miami back when there was real heat in the anti-Castro movement. We were the people that got pissed. It's been a long time, and the younger generation has other things on their minds. Okay.....so you say........ :glare Well, if you're not a part of the exile community ... This is nothing like the Elian matter. There is no small child being snatched by force and being returned to Fidel. This is far closer the the "Los Van Van" protest.
April 9, 201214 yr This is the mentality you are concerned with here.....this is what can happen tomorrow. I'd have to imagine there would be guards, cops, etc there to make sure nobody touches him. And Ronald Reagan had the secret service protecting him in 1981....... The video you showed had nobody getting shot, just pushed around. Really ? Is that all you have to say after watching that ? :lol You compared it to THAT VIDEO specifically. Nothing further.
April 9, 201214 yr Seriously, I don't see how people think this is going to be an issue in a month. People get way too bored with their outrage if nothing happens (and nothing will happen), especially when it is something so damn... well, someone already used the word but... innocuous. This is such a ridiculous controversy and it's going to burn out. Also, nobody is going to try and shoot Ozzie. What the hell man?
April 9, 201214 yr yeah - there just isn't enough there to keep the emotional fire burning on this one. It's good they are on the road right now ..... I'm sure there will be a big show/display when they come back, there will be loud noises for a while and then the next bit of outrage will continue. The politicians have shown their outrage, so when it comes election time they can say that they were outraged ...... but they are much too busy to stay outraged that long on such a topic. It's a middle aged man, who is known for saying stupid things, on a team that really doesn't have the pulse of the city at the beginning of a long, grinding season Ozzie will get reprimanded (although I doubt fined/suspended) ...... everyone will make a big show to ease off the initial emotions Once that initial passion dispenses people will move to acceptance ........... the herald or whatever self serving outlet will just use it as another way to take a shot at the organization when it serves their purpose, it will blip again in july with the franchis on showtime, if there is a big event with big media coverage maybe a full protest will fire up again and I'm sure ozzie will be added to the long list of individuals/actions that old people grumble about or the disinterested use to prop up and support their already developed bias Unless it's compounded by something even more idiotic from here, this thing just shouldn't have enough legs to make a lasting impact There just isn't enough there to really sustain it and there will undoubtedly be future wrongs that will distract the dissenters
April 9, 201214 yr Will the assassination be shown tomorrow on TV? after a pre-assassination celebration directed by emilio estefan
April 9, 201214 yr This whole thing is exceedingly stupid. 9 pages and undoubtedly more on the way. As much as I am not an Ozzie fan (mostly for tactical reasons and his price tag), I know where he is coming from with that specific comment. You can respect an aspect of a person without condoning their actions. I can think of more than a handful of figures in history for whom I have similar feelings. It's a stupid fallacy. He was flapping his gums like always and made a crappy joke. And I'll give 8:1 to whoever said he would by fired by Friday. Name the amount. I don't make a habit of giving out odds coming from poker, so take advantage of it guy.

April 9, 201214 yr Median age of protestors over/under 55? Keep dismissing the Cuban-American community as a bunch of old timers, but let me tell you something. I live in a town near Miami that's 75% Cubans or descendants of Cubans. The majority of second and third generation Cuban-Americans speak perfect Spanish and English, and have a lot of disposable income. My town has a median household salary of $75,000+, and most of these doctors, lawyers, architects, etc. love Cuba and care about Cuba because even though they have never been there, they grew up being told by their parents or grandparents how wonderful Cuba was before Castro. Some even belong to Cuban "nostalgia groups" that get together to smoke cigars and remember Cuba as it used to be. These 2nd and 3rd Generation Cuban-Americans with tons of money are some of the people that the Miami Marlins are trying to attract. So I would not be so quick to dismiss Cuban-Americans if I was working for the Marlins. That's why Ozzie is being forced to come down tomorrow and beg for forgiveness. Today at my local cigar lounge, a lot of these 2nd and 3rd Generation Cuban-Americans were ticked off with the Marlins, and I know some of them go to Marlins games and have season tickets.

And those people have better places to be at 11AM than bitching at a stupid press conference.
April 9, 201214 yr And those people have better places to be at 11AM than bitching at a stupid press conference. Well, this was at 4:30PM at the local cigar lounge. I'm sure 99% of them won't be at the press conference (I sure wont,) but that's no excuse to dismiss them, as they are potential customers. Loria needs to tell Ozzie that in the future to stay away from mentioning Castro or anything having to do with Cuban politics. He is controversial enough as it is, so he has no need to go there.
April 9, 201214 yr Even if they replace him, who do they replace him with? McKeon again? He wouldn't dare pull a Miami Marlins Jersey over his head after how last year went. Rodgiguez quit- f*** him. Gonzalez was terrible- he's ATL's problem Girardi couldn't handle Loria, or Loria couldn't handle Girardi. Tony Perez I'm sure would rather sit at home. Andre Dawson's never been mentioned as a canidate for any managers job. Ryne Sandberg? Mike Piazza? I would only support Ozzies Firing if they brought in Piazza, and thats just for selfish reasons.

This is such a ridiculous controversy and it's going to burn out. Also, nobody is going to try and shoot Ozzie. What the hell man? Well, apparently if I lived in Maimi for my whole life I would be expecting Ozzie to be possibly assassinated this week. If he lives, he will find himself out of a job in a week. Since I don't live in Miami, I think that Ozzie will issue an apology tomorrow and that will smooth things over. Some people will still be pissed, but the whole situation will be ancient history in the not too distant future. But of course, my opinion doesn't matter.

April 9, 201214 yr Author I had multiple family members killed by the firing squads of Fidel Castro. Ozzie Guillen can go * himself. I am still a Marlins fan. I love the team. I will always be a fan. And I will always support them. But I am no Ozzie Guillen fan. And people who says its blown out of proportion are doing the dangerous thing many Americans do, and thats interjecting opinions about situations they have no possibility in knowing how the affected party feels. Fidel is Cuba's Hitler as Dan LeBetard said. If you talk to Jews who had people killed during his regime, I am sure a comment in which Casto was replaced with Hitler would make them very upset. I understand people HATING negative PR with their beloved team, but its not just some little thing that will get tossed to the side. Saying you respect a murderer, especially one who had your relatives killed, is not going to go over well. Especially in Miami. Excellent post. It's exactly how much of the community thinks and how its reacting. I am thinking more and more Ozzie could be out before Friday. If he is still the manager I will be surprised. Do you want to put money on this? Like, you'll be surprised, so you think it's more than a 50% chance he's fired before Friday. I'll lay you even money. I'll put up $1,000.00 USD. I'd like to see a good old fashioned ban bet on this.

April 9, 201214 yr Ozzie will survive this. However, this might hurt attendance a little bit...at least until everyone forgets about the incident. However, Ozzie needs to stay out of Cuban politics for his own good. He does not want to have another of these incidents in another month or so. Then I would start to worry about his job. But as long as he keeps quiet about this issue from now on, he will survive this.

Just trying to sweeten the deal for the Old fellow. Its +EV for him I've check-shoved with a lot worse than that before, but I try to do so only when its profitable. Although my lone and brief televised appearance may indicate otherwise

Marlins have a lot of Cuban fans that are gonna be pissed at him & not show up to the games because of it.
April 9, 201214 yr There is another way for "Castrogate" to be forgotten. If the Miami Marlins come out of Philadelphia 2-1, sweep the Astros and sweep the Cubs, then Ozzie can insult the pope, Virgin Mary, and Jesus himself, and no one would care. It doesn't help him that 'Castrogate" occurred in the wake of a very sloppy start to the season.
April 9, 201214 yr Careful 30Plus, you have written enough to constitute a binding contract. I wouldn't want for anyone to accept your offer and then have to put us in a situation of being witnesses at a trial for "breach of contract." Unless betting outside a casino is illegal in Florida? :unsure Possible frustration by supervening illegality? Anyway, sorry, it couldn't be helped. It's the lawyer in me.
