April 9, 201214 yr I think this is becoming a bigger deal than people originally expected it to be. Earlier today I said it would be, and the "head in the sand" people tried to just excuse it away If you live in Miami, and of course those that don't shouldn't speak on this, but those of us who have lived here all of our lives know there are topics you just don't go too, and speaking of Fidel in a positive light, even as a joke, is something you should not do. It can get you killed. And that is no joke. Old timer, bro, I don't give you a hard time but the whole " you have to live in miami or else you can comment" thing has run its course. This is the second time you have used it in an argument and I don't agree at all that you have to live in the area to be able to comment. You may better understand the situation but it doesn't change anything else really. Cop, you can say whatever you want, and I respect that, you know cause we have spoken privately before, but speaking authoritatively you just can't do it, unless you know the pulse of this place. I was born here 52 years ago, and have lived with the fallout from Fidel and his communist azz all my life. It changed my city forever (it can be debated for better or for worse), and is a completely different place than what my parents and one of my grandparents grew up in (my father's father was born in Miami in 1906). Miami was a sleepy, Southern city made up of mostly people who came here from other places in Florida, Georgia, sprinkled with a few Yankee's. Many of the people here used to farm (my mother's father) owned 160 acres in what is now the City of West Miami and grew tomatoes, strawberries and pole beans. That was the norm until the 1960's.
April 9, 201214 yr What do the marlinsbaseball.com Cubans feel about his comments? I think it was a completely stupid and unnecessary comment to make. Why the hell would he speak about Fidel in anything even resembling a positive light when you have a lot of Cuban fans, your stadium is little Havana and you've lived in Miami for 12 years? I know that he was only referring to Fidel's longevity but it still doesn't seem necessary or smart. I can perfectly understand why Cubans in Miami are outraged and are either boycotting games, holding demonstrations and/or calling for Ozzie's resignation/suspension. A lot of people were displaced from their country, lost family, were stripped of their liberties and suffered a multitude of injustices due to this man and that can bring out a lot of emotions that manifest in different and somewhat irrational ways. I personally don't think that Ozzie should be forced to resign and I won't be boycotting any games whenever I get the opportunity to go but I do understand why others would.
April 9, 201214 yr I know the situation is particularly sensitive to those who live in Florida, but I'm just weary on suspending/firing a baseball manager for political commentary that may or may not have been taken out of context. I agree with this. The idea that I can watch my team be hijacked by some high and mighty ex-Cubans who want to hear their own voice and drown everyone else out is offensive. If they fire Ozzie I for one am cancelling my tickets. I will not stand for letting the radical politics of a small group take over my sports team.
April 9, 201214 yr Author This situation somewhat reminds me of the John Rocker situation. Granted, his inflammatory remarks were in regard to another fan base and not a political comment but I think this situation is getting blown way out of proportion and a lot of people are losing the context of what Ozzie said and who the man himself is. John Rocker was a red neck who hated everyone that wasn't exactly like him. Ozzie isn't that at all. As was said, Fidel is like a cockroach in more ways than one but Ozzie admires that he hasn't died yet and I say so what? He is a baseball manager and not someone of any geo political concern. But I will say that anyone who listened to Ozzie speak at length, knows that he is anything but dumb but smart people do dumb things and to raise the name of Castro in Miami and not have it be an insult isn't the brightest of moves. Tomorrow's apology should suffice and the good people of Miami that are of Cuban ancestory should accept it and move on with their lives as the Marlins look to be a fun team to watch this year in a stadium that guarantees baseball everyday Rocker was way different, I think. He was exhibiting outright racism. Ozzie's comments are relatively innocuous; I think that many are blowing them out of proportion.

It can get you killed. And that is no joke. I see that you haven't stopped your whole "if you don't live here, you can't have an opinion" mantra. That's ridiculous. People can live in Miami for their whole lives and not have enough common sense to grasp the pulse of a given situation. And some people live in DC and believe that they have enough of a grasp of a local South Florida situation to comment with any veracity. I never said anyone can't have an opinion. We all have them, just like we all have an azz. Its whether or not you can speak authoritatively on a subject because of a life-long experience or just shoot from the hip with an opinion when you live remotely from an area.
April 9, 201214 yr What do the marlinsbaseball.com Cubans feel about his comments? I don't care. Part of the reason people leave Cuba is because they can't say certain things. Some come here and don't let people say what they like. It's ridiculous.
April 9, 201214 yr I love Old Timer's posts. We should've honored Trayvon Martin on Opening Day and now Ozzie's going to get shot tomorrow. Can't wait for the next topic.

Two different people can live in the same location their whole lives and draw different conclusions. See this board for evidence. Residence is only a superficiality. It's actually a logical fallacy--an appeal to authority. People with poor reasoning ability use it as a crux to try to compensate for their poor argumentation.

He needs to be coached himself tonight and I hope the Marlins understand that. He should not face the exile media without being coached what to say and how to say it. They are looking for ways to destroy him.

Most people who rage are those who are too decrepit to really do anything. It's really not that big of a deal.

April 9, 201214 yr Ozzie's comments are relatively innocuous; I think that many are blowing them out of proportion. Oh really ? Definition of INNOCUOUS 1 : producing no injury : harmless 2 : not likely to give offense or to arouse strong feelings or hostility

April 9, 201214 yr I bet you the majority of Cubans don't even give a f*** about this. Aside from the assholes who began planning some boycott or whatever, has anyone even said anything? Ozzie is a guy who says stupid things. I'm sure a lot of people can read and have already put what he said into context, especially after his apology the other day.

April 9, 201214 yr Author Also Relatively, he said. He also said "people are blowing it out of proportion." Bingo. He took me out of context too. The nature of them is far less acerbic in relative terms if you compare them to what Rocker said.

April 9, 201214 yr This whole thing is stupid. 1. lacking ordinary quickness and keenness of mind; dull. 2. characterized by or proceeding from mental dullness; foolish; senseless 3. tediously dull, especially due to lack of meaning or sense; inane; pointless 4. annoying or irritating; troublesome. 5. in a state of stupor; stupefied
April 9, 201214 yr Nice try, but I believe he meant definition 1 not 2. But they have caused injury. I'm sure the Marlins ticket sales today have suffered some loss.
