May 27, 201214 yr Id like to go get Reddick from the A's. Right team, wrong player. They should be all over Seth Smith (or Johnny Gomes). Smith would be perfect as a lefty power bat. Under control through 2014, won't make a killing in arb, .871 career OPS RHP. He would help immediately, and "long term" easily bridge to Yelich. Send over Dominguez, Dunn/Jennings and another A ball projectable reliever. Beane would do it for a hope and prayer at 3B and more power arms. He has plenty of outfielders and DH candidates.
May 27, 201214 yr Injury waiting to happen.... Go get Dunn or C Lee. Cost less and they don't live on the DL. Also they are not Canadian haha. Trade any prospect beside our top 2 they both look like real deals. NO. DO NOT GET THEM. Firstly, Dunn has somewhere around $50 million left on his contract, and he can't play D to save his life. He's better off DHing in Chicago. Secondly, Carlos Lee ... NO. Just, freaking ... NO. Enough with the Carlos Lee infatuation. He can't play D either, and we have enough right-handed bats.

Since when did your first baseman have to be a good defender? First baseman are there to hit 30 HR and 100 RBI. I guess your the James Loney kinda guy. If your saying Dunn or Lee would not be a major upgrade to this team you don't know baseball. To proven vets that drive in runs.
May 28, 201214 yr Carlos Lee is pretty bad, though. Like, three seasons in a row of sub-.800 OPS mixed with an $18 million salary. That's an awful suggestion.

If your saying Dunn or Lee would not be a major upgrade to this team you don't know baseball. To proven vets that drive in runs. Firstly, *you're, in two spots. Secondly ... the first baseman ALWAYS has to be a good defender. You need a first baseman that your infield will be comfortable with when they accidentally spike a ball in the dirt that they know will be scooped. A guy that your infield knows will be able to get up and catch a high throw, or just have great instincts in general. Needs a real good glove and an alright arm. Dunn's defense lost more games than his bat won for the Nationals when he played first base. Carlos Lee, as mentioned, is a guy that's getting old and can't do much anymore in the power department. If he was playing pretty much anywhere else but Houston, he'd pretty much be retired already or a bench bat. His power numbers are already down significantly as it is, imagine if he played here. His OPS would drop from the .780s to the .600s unless he became a full-out contact hitter. Some absolute BS there saying "I don't know baseball" because I don't think you need a 30 homer 100 RBI bat at first base to win games ... YOU don't know baseball if you seriously think that Dunn or Carlos Lee would be upgrades to this team. The team has won this month with defense and pitching. This time does not need a massive dump of defense for a guy who can't drive the ball anymore or a guy who has about $50 mil left on his contract to strike out 180 times and play horrific defense [yeah, I know, I already mentioned we'd lose a ton of defense, THAT'S HOW BADLY DUNN WOULD HURT US DEFENSIVELY.] If you're gonna sacrifice defense for offense, you do it in left field, kinda like the Marlins have done with Logan Morrison. NOT FIRST BASE.
May 28, 201214 yr Adam Dunn would almost certainly be an overall upgrade for this team. They've been winning with pitching and defense, but they would need those things just a little less if they had a huge bat in the middle of the lineup. It increases your margin for error. The problem with him is the contract. Almost entirely.
May 28, 201214 yr If we had the DH, sure, Dunn would be fine. We don't have the DH, I'd rather not go from a good-almost great defender at first base in Gaby Sanchez [and LoMo ain't bad at first, either] to total crap just because he can swing a bat with power. The team has enough power as it is, just need to be able to get it going. LoMo at just 3 homers, that number is gonna go up, and soon. Hanley has 7, that'll keep going up. I know he hasn't hit one since Pittsburgh was here, but he'll pick it back up. We don't need another power bat, especially another power bat that Ks that much and can't play defense.
May 28, 201214 yr The Marlins rank 11th in the National league in home runs and 12th in slugging percentage. And 11th in on base percentage. And 12th in runs scored overall. The team does not have "enough power as it is," even if it gets going. The team has one legitimate 30 home run guy. Hanley and Lomo are both 20 home run guys at this point (and I'm doubtful about Lomo's ability to do that and keep the rest of his skills), and nobody else really projects to hit more than 15. The team absolutely needs another bat. Maybe you don't think Adam Dunn is that bat, but you're absolutely nuts if you think adding .389 on base percentage and .586 slugging wouldn't make the team better, even with his defense. It's also incredibly silly to say that all Dunn brings is the ability to "swing a bat with power." If this team has anything to spare, it is infield defense. I would give up some of that for another big bat. Personally, I don't think Dunn is the answer because we need a left fielder more and shouldn't be taking on a big salary commitment like that, but he would definitely make this team better.
May 28, 201214 yr You'd be sacrificing defense at what may arguably be the most important position on the infield, though, in all honesty. Throw in the dirt, picked on a short hop - either eliminates a baserunner or keeps him at first in worst case scenario. Ball gets by, best scenario is he stays at first, worst case scenario he gets on second or even third, depending on where the throw comes from. Do you need offense from a first baseman? Yes, you do. But you also need a good glove over there. Whether that offense is straight up power or just a contact guy who sprays line drives all over [or even a guy right between those] shouldn't matter. Shouldn't require a 30/100 guy.

I don't give a sh*t about 100 RBI. Nobody should. Let's stop bringing that up as a community. But all other things being equal, a guy who hits home runs > a guy who doesn't. And Adam Dunn > every single player on the Marlins except Giancarlo, as an offensive player. You don't need a 30 home run guy at first base. You don't need any sort of specific player at any position on the field. Power hitters tend to be the most productive offensive players in baseball. It just so happens that power hitters also tend to be the least athletic guys on the field. And while first might be the most important position in the infield, it is also the one that requires the least amount of athleticism to play at a passable level. This is why power hitters tend to clump at 1st base (and to a lesser extent left field, right field and DH). If you're not getting production from first base, you need to make up for it somewhere. Because first base is the easiest position to get elite offensive production from.
May 28, 201214 yr Mike..... Please answer this question honestly. Would you rather A...Dunn or Lee at first and Lomo in left. Or B....Lomo at first and Cogs or Kearns in left. If you answer B then you are someone that I can't argue with. and thank god u are not our GM. Lol... Really though this shouldn't even be an aguement.

If you answer B then you are someone that I can't argue with. and thank god u are not our GM. It's really just not that simple. Money makes it not that simple. We have Yelich coming up In a few years and has shown no signs of slowing down. He has been pretty good in outfield and is a natural firstbasemen. Some of the newer people in these parts seem to give up on players as soon as they hit a slump and forget what they have done. Gaby can fill a cheap need and is productive at first when he's on. This demotion was long overdue and hopefully is the snap he needed to get him back into good Gaby. Lomo is in left. So your not just throwing out Kearns and Cogs everyday. Yes the team would be better offensively with Lee or Dunn but to leave it at that is oversimplifying.

How about C - LoMo at first and Petersen in left? Or Bonifacio in left, Petersen in center. Seriously, stop thinking Carlos Lee would be an upgrade of ANY kind. He can't hit for power any more. Adam Dunn would only be an offensive upgrade, and I'd rather have LoMo at first for his overall game. Plus, as CanesCop said, "money." I wouldn't want Dunn even if he came cheap. His defensive liability, to me, would override the offense he provides. Bobbob - I do agree that first base requires the least athleticism on the field, but you still don't want a slouch out there. You want a guy that can pick the ball and make accurate throws, know when to get off the bag to save a ball that's going to be an errant throw regardless, that sort of thing. An all-around first baseman, not necessarily a power guy, is what would be better. A player like Dunn is better as a DH than a first baseman. If we had the DH, I'd be all for trying to get someone like Dunn or Morneau. But, simply put, we don't have the DH. We have 9 guys who hit, and the same 9 field. I'm more for good defense with decent hitting ability [or, as Fish Fan10 put it, a "James Loney" type of guy] than a guy who can hit 35-40 homers with horrific defense. Just personally.
May 29, 201214 yr James Loney types are terrible baseball players. You cannot throw out light hitters at premium positions, unless you can make up for it elsewhere. The Marlins could when they were running 30-home run guys at shortstop and second base. They aren't doing it anymore, so they need to make up for that offensive production somewhere.
May 29, 201214 yr I wouldn't exactly call Loney a "light hitter," per se. He gets a good number of doubles, and he drives in runs [i know, you said don't worry about RBIs...]. Maybe a light hitter for first base, if you're going by the power hitter standards, yes, but overall he's not exactly a light hitter. His low home run totals are a product of his home ballpark. Only 25 homers at home compared to 44 away. Put him in a fair ballpark, I'm sure he could be a 20 homer guy. He definitely showed power potential in 2007 when he hit 15 homers in just 96 games [10 on the road]. I'm sure you're probably more going on Loney's OPS to say he's a "terrible player," but he is a guy that draws walks while not striking out that much, and for his career on the road [almost 1,600 plate appearances], his OPS is .824. That's decent, I'd say.

Half of our games will be against NL opponents, I'd imagine, and the other half against the AL, half of THOSE will be at home, eliminating the DH. I also have a feeling we'll see some rule changes next year.
May 29, 201214 yr Assuming we're in the playoff hunt and looking to make a deal for a bat. Who can we look to get? Seth Smith? Gomes? Who else?
