For what it's worth, Eovaldi and McGough [stat-wise] seem a LOT better than Zach Lee.

July 25, 201214 yr This off season better be another f***ing shopping spree now. I wanna see Bourn and Hamilton here. We don't need both. We DEFINITELY don't need 3 lead-off hitters. BJ Upton would probably be our best bet. We also need a third baseman now.
July 25, 201214 yr I have no idea why Choate had to be in the deal. McGough is a nobody, and Eovaldi isn't a top 100 prospect. This is really a trade to get rid of salaries. But still, many declared the Uggla for Infante/Dunn trade a terrible deal when it happened, and look what happened. Uggla is overpaid, and Infante contributed well. Many were furious (including me) after trading Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham for Bonifacio, Smolinski, and PJ Dean. Willingham didn't last with the Nats for long, Olsen's god knows where, while Bonifacio is a starter for us, and Smolinski is a decent guy in the minors. I'm rationalizing here. I dunno man... the point is that the people mad about those deals didn't realize that they weren't bad deals. As you said, and I agree, it was salary dumping. I just don't know why Choate was included. I'd imagine Choate alone could fetch a nice price somewhere.

This whole trade confuses me, but at the same time doesn't. The Marlins think Hanley will never be the old Hanley, and thus don't want to pay him over $30 million over the next two years.

He may say this is for another shopping spree. But you would have to think this is flat out throwing in the towel.

July 25, 201214 yr To make me feel better, I am going to think about it as the Marlins trading Hanley for $31.5 million in freed up cash. Now, if they don't use that money to bring in a nice FA in the offseason, I think it's time to find a new team to root for.
