If You Were The FO, What Changes Would You Make In The Offseason? Who

Never wanted Melky. Get pagan for cheaper and similar production. always have liked him. A 2 year 10-12 million would be a solid deal for him.

If we're going to be handing out 6M a year to .700-.750 OPS OFs, at least we'll have a ton of players wanting to join Miami.

I really don't understand why you'd want him. He's completely unnecessary. We have Ruggiano and Stanton and several other choices like Kearns, Peterson, Hernandez, Yelich coming up. Just saying, if you're goign to spend money, make it on a player that's a clear improvement.

We have 2 outfielders who can play everyday next year only. Ruggiano and Stanton. 1 if you think Ruggiano will never produce like he did this year again, even if he is a quality major leaguer. A guy like pagan who can play all outfield spots, steal 30 bases, hit .275 and still has pop and puts pressure on the defense, switch hitter, is a career .300 hitter with RISP. HE is a solid major leaguer who can hold a spot in the lineup till Yelich is ready at the earliest at the end of next year.

He is a quality outfielder who would be worth 5 million for what he produces, plus we have only 2 outfielders for next year and no one who can play centerfield.

He can hit many places in the lineup too. he would be great at either 1,2,5,6, or 7 and would give us nice depth in the lineup. Plus, his game would be a great fit for our stadium.

Plus he is definitely a clear improvement over Hernandez, Kearns, Petersen, and possibly ruggiano.

What outfielder, aside from Hamilton and bourn would you rather have than him this offseason?

B.J. Upton. Torii Hunter.

I agree with you that Pagan is better than those OF's you mentioned that we currently have, but I'm saying I don't think he's 5-6M better. It's all about how much money he's going to want and for how long and how much we're willing to spend.

Torii Hunter cant [play centerfield anymore and bj upton is better based solely on potential. he hasnt been better in a few years,

I really wish those of you who want BJ Upton would stop..he's awful at the plate...no thanks! Although he'd fit in quite well with this years hitters

"Change of scenery."

Plus he'd have a ton of fun out in our spacious center field.

Not to mention, being that he's had probably the worst year of his career so far, he'll come CHEAP.

I don't think that Cox should firmly be considered the inevitable inheritor of third base at all, but someone on a 1-2 year deal would be nice there.

I'd much rather try to trade for Span over Upton too. Upton doesn't excite me much.

Upton and a third baseman stop gap for Cox. Set.

OK, maybe a little different bullpen.

The team would absolutely be set to not make the playoffs again.

Upton would come cheap, though, and not for any prospects that we don't really have room to trade away.

Could probably have Upton on a 3-5 year deal maxing out at around $30m-$35m. Sure, Span would be nice, but we've already got 2 lead-off guys.

Upton kind of sucks, though. I wouldn't be opposed to getting him, but I'm not on board with him being around for 3-5 years.

Neither one excites me. Both are pretty average offensively.

Where are they going to get someone better to play CF next season?

Span’s career OPS+ is about average for a CF and over the past 3 years is well below average for a CF. Adding players like that to a mediocre team doesn’t excite me.

By the way, Span is tied for 7th in MLB for CF WAR.

I no longer buy WAR numbers because I don't find the defensive portions of it trustworthy. They're all over the place depending on what version of WAR you use.

That's not answering the question, though.

UZR and +/- are usually regarded as the most reliable fielding metrics and they both rate him well above average in that regard. He's an above average player.
