May 20, 201313 yr Pretty wild his K/9 is only 4.8 this year though (his last 2 games have been much improved in that department though).
May 20, 201313 yr Author Pretty wild his K/9 is only 4.8 this year though (his last 2 games have been much improved in that department though). Not a strikeout guy, though. He pitches to contact and has been referred to as a Mark Buerhle-type guy. He won't K a bunch of guys as he moves up the food chain into the majors... But he's the kind of guy that should have a lot of success in a place like Marlins Park.
May 20, 201313 yr He has been a strikeout guy at every level with the exception of this year. A 4.8 K/9 is abysmal. He doesn't walk anyone though, and it's nice to see that he's only allowed 7 HR's now in 232 minor league innings. That HR rate is probably not sustainable, but it's nice to see that he can limit them.
May 20, 201313 yr He's not walking a lot, but he's giving up a ton of hits. Hitability probably explains the low strikeout rate. I wouldn't quite say he's "thriving" yet.

But he's the kind of guy that should have a lot of success in a place like Marlins Park. But he was a strikeout guy up until this season. That's what the stats say at least. He had 8.6 K/9 rate in A ball in 2012 (124 IP). Personally I'd much rather have those 2012 peripherals than what he's doing now.
June 1, 201313 yr The strikeouts are continuing to trend upward. Now 22 Ks in 22 innings with 1 BB and 1 ER over his last four starts. He's not walking a lot, but he's giving up a ton of hits. Hitability probably explains the low strikeout rate. I wouldn't quite say he's "thriving" yet. I wouldn't say he's getting shelled (8.7 H/9). Which is not great but nowhere near extremely hittable. Its about the same rate he posted with Lansing last year with the same solid BB rate.
July 8, 201313 yr Jupiter Hammerheads Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Justin Nicolino 6.0 9 1 1 0 4 0 2.18
July 8, 201313 yr He's been giving up hits all damn season long and he's striking out way less batters than in previous seasons. And yet he's still not giving up any runs and he continues to not walk batters. There has to be a great deal of luck that is involved with Nicolino's season thus far, but I can't stop looking at how good that ERA looks. I still see him as a future #2 or 3 or in our rotation and deserving of a chance at Jacksonville to start next season, but he needs to refine his stuff and get more K's and give up less hits. It's impressive how he's put together such a clunky masterpiece of a half season.
July 8, 201313 yr When I first mentioned the H/9 rate in mid May, it was almost at 10.0. He had three starts where he gave up 7 or more hits in less than 6 innings. Things have settled down for him now.
July 8, 201313 yr They saved him a run throwing a guy out at the plate too. But the low walk numbers are a big factor. You can afford to give up an extra single or two when there's no one on base that got a free pass.
July 16, 201313 yr Whenever Heaney gets the call up, AA is going to have one of the best rotations I've seen from any of our minor league squads. Heaney/Nicolino/Descalfini/Conley And yes I know Descalfini has bombed in AA so far.
July 16, 201313 yr Nicolino is going to absolutely dominate double A. His HR rate in a non-biased ballpark is amazing. if you put him in a league where even a flyball pitcher has a good HR rate it is just going to be unfair.
July 16, 201313 yr Justin Nicolino's Twitter with guest appearances from Anthony DeSclafani and Andrew Heaney.
August 1, 201313 yr Through three starts it hasn't been pretty. HR/9 around 1.3. anyone have any idea what has happened? him and disclafani have not performed yet in double A.
August 1, 201313 yr He was fine last night - 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 ER, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts. Not so good in his first 2 starts, but... He's just adjusting to a new level at AA and its still a small sample size.
