October 9, 201313 yr What's going on here? We're talking about how woodworking is a game changer because it replaces carpentry in the lineup.Matt Carpentry? No Cris Carpentry member of the 1993 Inaugural team, not the one who pitched for Cardinals
October 10, 201313 yr So what do you make out of the wood? Birdhouses and stuff? Whether your comment was directed at BroncoBob I don't know, but I'll answer it. My last major project was 5-6 years ago. Kitchen rehab. Demolished the entire room right down to the studs. New tile floor, new ceiling. Re-did the plumbing and added shut-off valves, re-did the electrical and added outlets. New stainless steel sink. Built 16 cabinets including doors and drawers from scratch -- solid oak and 3/4" oak-veneered plywood. About 500 component pieces all cut and machined one at a time from raw wood. Tools anyone could buy for $500 -- table saw, router and drill press -- turned $2,000 worth of wood into 25K+ worth of kitchen if done by any cabinet outfit. Doubled the storage capacity of the kitchen by going to 42" upper cabinets -- all the way to the ceiling. (You find a lot of weird stuff when you rip apart a 70 year-old kitchen, I don't know what they were thinking.) Added lots of built-in stuff from a microwave space to a knife-block to a spice rack to pan-hangers to a lazy susan occupying a previously totally unused corner of about 12 cubic feet. All in a kitchen that has nothing that is square, straight or plumb. Crown moulding (machined by me) can hide a lot of original construction defects, and some of them were unbelievable. Took me months to finish, but I wasn't in any hurry. And it was great fun. The first project I did was a couple of solid walnut pie-crust tables, back in 1968 (I was a junior in high school.) About 20" high, 13" diameter, Queen Anne legs, they look something like this: http://www.aaafurnituredirect.com/catalog/johnc4925171.jpg The pie-crust edge detail looks something like this, except that it's repeated 6 times around the circumference, as opposed to 4 times in the picture: http://www.antiquepurveyor.com/productimages/ball-and-claw-pie-crust-table-7266.jpg I've never built a birdhouse.
October 10, 201313 yr Since this topic has the word 'Hill' in it, let me add that Perry Hill has added WHIP to his list of useless stats that don't mean anything. His current argument: you don't hear about them during the playoffs because they aren't needed to win in the playoffs (or some other asinine s***) Having a higher WAR or lower WHIP doesn't mean you cruise through the playoffs, sure. Mostly because all the teams at that point are very good. GETTING TO the playoffs however, that's another story. And jesus I wish people wouldn't be so defensive about them. No one is demanding that coaches stop teaching and gm's have no actual work to do short of handing out 5 million per WAR point or whatever. All people are saying is pay give some attention to these things. It's not magic. No, actually some respected veterans of this board have argued in effect that stats are the only meaningful way to evaluate players. Who? I think the point is the marlins FO gives 0 shits about advanced metrics. There is no balance.
October 12, 201313 yr So what do you make out of the wood? Birdhouses and stuff? Actually I did make a Purple Martin house out of cedar. Still on a 10' pole surrounded by an 8' tall obelisk that I made and grow passion fruit on. But I make everything from a large arbor with planters on the side for flowering vines leading into my back yard to indoor and outdoor furniture. Just one of my hobbies.

Yea, I bought a fixer-upper, too. Doing it all myself about the same way you are. Making my own cabinets, etc. Started the main bathroom this weekend. Once done, only 3 rooms left. Considering making tongue in groove slats for the wood floors in 2 of them. Like you said, it takes time. But it keeps me out of the bars and out of trouble. LOL I did the outside first (complete with a deck the full width of the house and all the Adirondack furniture for it) and only have these rooms inside to be complete. Haven't done the kitchen yet, but I did make a pot and pan hanger to free up a lot of cupboard space.
October 12, 201313 yr What the f*** is going on in this thread? Making conversation in a very down time for Marlins news.
October 12, 201313 yr I've never built a birdhouse. Don't know if it's a myth or not, but Purple Martins supposedly take care of mosquitos. I've read articles going both ways. I just figured it was quick, easy, and couldn't hurt. I will say that I live on a canal and don't have a mosquito problem.
