dim
I remember the Marlins signing Hanley to a six year deal that was supposed to keep Hanley, who was at the prime of career and was supposed to be the best SS in baseball for many years to come, from age 25 to age 30. Now the Red Sox give Hanley $90 million for 5 years that'll keep him in Boston from age 31 to 36. Make fun of the Marlins all you want. At least when it came to Hanley we got a great great GREAT deal even if it didn't turn out so great in the end. Funny is that on the surface 5/90 for an .800+ OPS'ing shortstop in today's baseball is a solid deal, even for a player on the downturn of their career. Still can't decipher what the hell happened from 2010 to 2012. Literally went from the best SS in baseball to a barely above replacement level player. I watched every year of Hanley's career in Miami as most of here have and I still have no idea how he turned so bad so quick, and then decided to go back to being bonkers in 2013 before evening back out this year. Really one of the weirdest career's to follow.

Really one of the weirdest career's to follow. If you remove that half season he went crazy for the Dodgers, you've got a SS who was once great but isn't anymore. He's just a solid above average player with an injury history who is probably worth the contract being reported.
Erick
You like Hanley way too much if you think he's worth more than 5 years. The reason why Hanley's offense was still so valuable over the years despite a decline was because he was playing SS. It's not nearly as valuable coming from LF and definitely not a big deal if he becomes a DH. Not to mention that he is injury prone and players usually don't get better as they approach their mid-30s. I doubt it'll end up being a "really good" contract as you said. What it could do for the Red Sox is that it gives them a good player, creating a logjam that they could use to acquire a big time pitcher now. Erick
You're assuming that another team would've given him more than 5 years. I'm not sure why. That's a pretty fair contract all things considered. It's basically what he's worth on the market at this point in his career. I'm not sure why his agent is dumb because some team wasn't dumb enough to sign him for more than five.
Erick
Tulo is a much better player than Hanley. Not even close, really.
Erick
If Hanley were still in his prime, he would've gotten way more than 5 years. In his prime, Hanley was an elite player at a scarce position. Unfortunately, he's signing his contract in 2014 and he's no longer that caliber of player. Tulowitzki is not a product of Coors. He's a career .865 .OPS away from Coors. He's also a gold glove caliber SS while Hanley has been a corner outfielder playing SS for several years now. Are teams supposed to disregard that? Tulo has consistently been elite when healthy. Just last year, he posted a 5.1 fWAR in just 91 games. That's MVP caliber. Comparing the two players right now is insane. I'm guessing that GM's weren't willing to give Hanley more than five years because they're not living in 2009 anymore...
Admin
I think Hanley wanted to play in Boston and he took a discount to do so.

Piazza31
oh the people who thought Hanley was done when we traded him..... sigh. He is- in his prime he was worth a 200MM contract. Now he's a 4 year guy. His potential never met his hustle. He's a disappointing player who had so much potential if he only tried. Can't wait to see another Ramirez in LF lollygag after a ball off the Monster at Fenway.

Wild Card
Boston always said Hanley was the one that got away... I guess this is them taking care of some unfinished business. Fuck Hanley, I'm glad to see him move to left field. Anyway, I think he's going to be a very good left fielder. His two best tools are speed and arm strength, and in Boston you don't really need good instincts to succeed in LF if you have speed. Their OF is going to be fun to watch. And hitting in Fenway should make him a superstar again for the next few years if he stays healthy. Good deal for him and the Sox.
