From a WAR perspective, I think it's a lot closer than we'd think just cause reyes and buerhle have been solid (not counting salaries here which clearly sway trade towards us in a landslide manner). Of course, we'll have adeiny for a lot more years and if he keeps putting up 3+ WAR seasons

But the Marlins could have done much better by sending the Jays some cash and extracting Syndergaard instead of Nicolino (for example). Syndergaard was universally regarded as the better prospect at the time (and of course today as well). Given how cheap this franchise is, they need to get back the best talent they can in every trade.

Scoop insists we got Dee Gordon from that trade because we sent Kike, who we got from Houston in a trade that included Marisnick. Please don't draw the line any farther than Dietrich who we at least got in a relatively immediate flip trade.

I mean, depending how you word it, yes the Toronto trade helped us get Gordon and others but Frisaro is kinda like "Man what a great trade in 2012 when Miami got Hech, Alvarez, Mathis, Escobar, Marisnick, Desclafani, Nicolino, Dietrich, Gordon, Haren, Latos, Cosart, Wates, Aruajo, Brigham, Guzman, Soto, Pineyro, and $10 million from the Dodgers all in one deal from the Blue Jays in exchange for John Buck!"

Latos was a No. 2 and Disco was (and probably still is), at best, a back-end starter. If that deal comes up again, you do it 10 out of 10 times.

If the marlins had an analytics department they never would have traded for Latos (I raised his delcining peripherals pretty loudly when the trade happened). However, I never really expected Disco to be so useful (good job cinci pitching coaches)

I still don't think he would have been good had he stay with us though as it was that new pitch that he seemingly learned in cinci that took him to the next level

November 13, 201510 yr I CAN say that he doesn't spend money! 1. even with the Giancarlo and Yelich signings, the Marlins started 2015 with the lowest payroll in baseball http://deadspin.com/2015-payrolls-and-salaries-for-every-mlb-team-1695040045 and that was BEFORE the Marlins started unloading some of their higher-paid players (Latos, etc.) around the trading deadline! Why was their payroll so low even with the Giancarlo and Yelich signings? because.... 2 Loria's big contracts are very backloaded. So far, Loria has shipped off those big contracts before he has to pay any real dough (eg, Buerhle, Delgado and Reyes) and frequently won't get market value in trades because of how those contracts are backloaded. Consider... Most praise the 2013 trade with Toronto. The Marlins wound up with some very valuable prospects from that deal, including Hech, Alvarez and Nicolino. But who were the Blue Jays top 2 prospects at the time of the deal? Noah Syndergaard and Travis d'Arnaud. We traded away a LOT of talent, how is it that we couldn't get either one? I'd suggest it was because of the structure of those Buerhle and Reyes contracts. Truth is, even when Loria spends money, he really doesn't. Or he winds up being cheap in other regards. As has been said many times before, this franchise is a dumpster fire. I realize that. But you need to realize he was smart to do this because it was protection in case that experiment would fail and it did, and we got some good pieces back for basically nothing. We are locking up the right players. And only time will tell if history will repeat with giancarlo especially. If it happens with stanton than we are together on this. But I dont see all negative here, and trust me I HATE Loria from a fans standpoint!

Most of us thought it was a great deal at the time. idk i really like disco... he's got #3 written all over him (and #2 ceiling) with that k rate and GB rate. Right now he'd be our 2nd best pitcher by a mile (doesnt mean much of course). But yeah, at the time didn't expect it to be so tremendously lop sided which it turned out to be. I just wish the marlins FO cared about something else besides ERA when evaluating pitchers
November 13, 201510 yr I guess it's possible, but I want to see him pitch another full season before I draw that type of conclusion. Steamer has him at a 4.03 ERA, 4.18 FIP and 2.1 WAR for 2016. If he puts up those numbers, we probably won't miss him. Not saying you're wrong, though.
