November 12, 201510 yr Author Well considering the article was about how the fish have extremely low revenue, your comment makes no sense. Polly's right, it doesn't seem that you read it. That being said it is an embarrassment that they have less revenue than every other team when there's a new ballpark. There are multiple reasons for this but one big one is the shitty TV deal they have. They are thankfully working on a new contract to put them more in-line with other teams. Right now they make nothing from TV or radio while other teams swim in that money. If I understand correctly, the Marlins only have themselves to blame for the shitty TV deal. Loria and Co signed a new contract to cash in sooner rather than waiting longer, which would have been more advisable.
November 12, 201510 yr I believe its a disgrace that the Marlins field a team with anything under a $100 million payroll these days. They have shit revenue but they still have enough to do that. Payroll aside... is the article correct that the team's revenue is so low and that Loria has to pay to cover losses? If so, isn't there a lot of that that isn't Loria's fault despite what an asshole he seems to be?

The 50-plus million he gets every year, coupled with the sweetheart deal he made with the local government, ensures that he turns a tidy profit so long as he doesn't spend very much on salaries. Even when there is horrible attendance. And this will continue for as long as he owns the franchise. I give credit where credit is due. But we cant sit here and say he doesnt spend. He locked up giancarlo, yelich, and is trying to do the same with Dee and Fernandez. The truth is Loria is too involved. He needs to hire a good staff and let them do what they need to do with the ballclub. This hasnt happened yet. As far as pocketing... Remember this, stanton alone makes half of it! I am not defending him but facts are facts and im a realist I CAN say that he doesn't spend money! 1. even with the Giancarlo and Yelich signings, the Marlins started 2015 with the lowest payroll in baseball http://deadspin.com/2015-payrolls-and-salaries-for-every-mlb-team-1695040045 and that was BEFORE the Marlins started unloading some of their higher-paid players (Latos, etc.) around the trading deadline! Why was their payroll so low even with the Giancarlo and Yelich signings? because.... 2 Loria's big contracts are very backloaded. So far, Loria has shipped off those big contracts before he has to pay any real dough (eg, Buerhle, Delgado and Reyes) and frequently won't get market value in trades because of how those contracts are backloaded. Consider... Most praise the 2013 trade with Toronto. The Marlins wound up with some very valuable prospects from that deal, including Hech, Alvarez and Nicolino. But who were the Blue Jays top 2 prospects at the time of the deal? Noah Syndergaard and Travis d'Arnaud. We traded away a LOT of talent, how is it that we couldn't get either one? I'd suggest it was because of the structure of those Buerhle and Reyes contracts. Truth is, even when Loria spends money, he really doesn't. Or he winds up being cheap in other regards. As has been said many times before, this franchise is a dumpster fire.
