Scoop on Jose

Featured Replies

Yeah considering how persistent Frisaro was in insisting Jose isn't going anywhere, for him to say something so cryptic it's almost like the reason would be something like "Jose's farts smell so bad that Stanton has complained to the front office more than once about it."

What's the significance of 2019 for Jose Fernandez? Is that the season he becomes a free agent? As in, 2018 would be his last year in Miami under club control?

Yes. They have him 16-17-18 then free agency

Remember the other day Frisaro said he knew one internal reason that Jose could actually be traded... yesterday Andy Slater called him out on it, saying Frisaro does know Jose could be traded and eventually in all their back and forth Frisaro implied something about wait until it's 2019 or something like that. So I figure he was just insinuating something about Jose hitting free agency. It's a mess though so whatever.

I take that as they won't trade him but Jose has zero interest in staying here long term, and frisaro won't say why until hose is no longer with the organization.

How do you know Jose has zero interest in staying long term? One thing is Boras advises his clients to test free agency, but if the Marlins offer the best deal at that point, I don't see why he wouldn't take it.

Odd he was receptive to any long term talks if he had zero interest though

I still think Jose and Boras both have zero interest in a lifetime type of extension (like a Stanton style 13 year deal) but that both would be receptive to a shorter extension so that he can have his extension and help Miami in the shorter term while still hitting free agency at a young age and being able to cash in on the record shattering mega deal he seems destined for. To me that's the best scenario for all parties involved and I can see it happening.

I'd bet Jose asked for a trade but knows the price is astronomical for him so he's just waiting for a deal to happen if/when it happens.

Probably wants to go to a big market like NY, Boston, LA and cash in on the endorsement dollars- it must kill him he's endorsed by 5 hour energy and Reggie Jackson once got his own Candy Bar.

Miami is a big enough market for Jose.  Miami was a big enough market for the likes of Marino, Lebron , and Wade so it should be big enough for Jose.  Miami is not a small market.  The problem is Loria doesn't have deep pockets when compared to other owners.

I'm sure any trade requests Jose made were just out of frustration from last season.  It doesn't even seem like he ever even made a formal trade request but rather just voiced his displeasure in the locker room in an immature kind of way.

The fact that the Marlins even listened to trade offers or requests stems from the fact that they don't think they can sign him long term. Mostly because of finances but also because of Boras.  Although those tensions with Boras seem to have subsided since the signing of Chen.

Also, I don't think Jose knows who Reggie Jackson is and if he does I doubt he loses any sleep over Reggie's candy bar.  LOL

Population numbers alone do not create a market. Baseball sucks in Miami. It's a small market.

I disagree with your statement in general, but he was specifically speaking about advertising dollars and opportunities.  In that regard size does matter.

Our TV ratings show that Miami is a good baseball market.  There is plenty of interest in baseball in Miami. The problem is Loria and Co.  They can't put a winning product on the field because of their nickle and dime ways.  It has made many fans sour on the Marlins.  We will never really now how successful baseball can be in Miami until Loria sells the team.

No again. Broadcast viewing numbers matter, not the population. Also, it's based on Nielson ratings which have shown to be increasingly inaccurate over the past decade. But whatever. People always say the marlins have good TV numbers but were ranked 25th. Wow, so good.

Loria and co do suck, but even before them interest in baseball has sucked. Check game attendance numbers in 97 and 03. People didn't care until we were in the hunt.

Miami isn't a good sports town in general. Miami cares about what's new, good, exciting, and what people will care about when posting pics on IG. Baseball isn't part of that until wildcard or division race and playoffs.

The interesting thing about attendance is how the figures are presented. If you look at 03 attendance and rank it against other mlb teams it's true that it was still in the bottom half. However if you compare it to 2002 attendance 03 was way higher. Then 04 and 05 both had increases in attendance from the previous years although still ranking in the bottom half of the league.

But what that shows is that baseball can very much make it here. However, in 06 attendance was down because we traded away half of the team ( Delgado lo Duca etc) so the fans were again disillusioned after they started coming back from the 1998 fire sale. If the team built a consistent culture of winning or at least being competitive fans will slowly start going to games. It was happening from 2003-2005, but loria stopped that trend from continuing.

The attendance in 2003-2005 is evidence for me why Miami is a bad baseball city and always will be.

For me it's the exact opposite. Because it showed that the fans started coming back after the 1998 fire sale   What the "Miami isn't a baseball town" people want to see is attendance over 3 million every single year  but to get to that level after the history we've had its going to be slow and fans need to regain the trust of the franchise and that can only be done with a commitment to winning, holding on to our good players and not trading them away etc I also find most people who make the Miami isn't a baseball town argument are always people who don't live in south Florida  (not talking about anyone specifically since I have no idea where any of you live)

Then another interesting thing on attendance was 2012. New stadium. New players. But what happens. The team performs miserably and then yet another fire sale "market correction". What was interesting is that it was a self fulfilling prophecy for the ownership. They claimed attendance isn't what they thought it would be so they trade everyone away. Further alienating the fan base and causing any fans that had regained some trust to want to stop following again.

Disagree. Attendance increasing in 2003-2005 from the 1999-2002 rates is to be expected after a world championship, but the 2004 and 2005 attendance numbers are pretty dismal considering that Loria left the core pretty much intact. Pudge left because of his greed and the Marlins dumped Lee but otherwise it certainly seemed like Loria was trying to maintain what he had. He even went out and signed Delgado. That was all a gesture of good faith, but the fans still didn't come. 22,000 fans/game in 2004 is pretty embarrassing (ranked 26th in MLB).

I don't have really fault Loria too much for what he did in 2006. He expected attendance numbers to be much higher than they were and I don't blame him. He thought that the tide was turning at that point but the fans didn't hold up their end of the bargain.

2012 is a different scenario. I don't blame Loria for dumping most of that money because it was clear that many of those contracts were overvalued and the Marlins weren't going to win with those pieces on the payroll.

However, it's important to point out that nobody really knew for sure that the 2012 squad was a piece of shit until a couple of months into the season. Despite the brand new ballpark, attendance figures in April and May (and the rest of the season for that matter) were pretty disappointing. I don't think that the Marlins ever publicly said what they were hoping for in terms of annual attendance, but I'd guess it was higher than 27,400. Perhaps more firmly in the low 30s.

I think that the lackluster attendance numbers before the team was blown up point to how little Miami cares about baseball. The only time fans ever really turned up at an appropriate rate was in 1993.

As far as I'm concerned, in advertising Miami is a small market.

Jose can get bigger and better endorsement dollars from Nike/UA/Gatorade/Wilson/ majestic and new era by just moving to NY,LA and Boston. He's heading to one of those 5 teams when he's capable of doing it.

If it's your opinion that Miami is a small market for advertising, then you are entitled to it.  It's inaccurate, but you are still entitled to it.  As far as the endorsement deals, all or most of those companies have had or still do have endorsement deals with Wade, Lebron and Marino.  I mean Lebron has a ton of Endorsement deals in Cleveland of all places.  Kevin Durant has a ton of endorsement deals in OKC!  In today's day and age, with all of the TV contracts and all of the internet exposure these athletes get, market really doesn't matter.  If you are great they will sign you.

Jose is going to go to whomever shows him the money.  If he goes to NY, LA, or Boston, it will be because they will out bid the rest.  Those teams have the financial resources to get it done.  I don't think endorsement deals will play a big factor in where Jose ends up.

Miami might be a smaller market than other cities but it also has more financial potential than other cities, like Milwaukee and St Petersburg for example. If the Marlins were around longer with more sustained success you'd see stronger support for them. Look how much support the dolphins get at the start of every season just because male adult football fans here have grown up wanting to support the team. That's what needs to happen to the Marlins and I don't doubt that will be the case a decade or two from now when kids who have never gone to a baseball game at Sun Life stadium are adults.
