Capps undergoing Tommy John

Featured Replies

I would expect more of a Bryan Morris type deal. Not a huge name, but a solid middle relief option. We're not getting Kimbrel or Betances.

We got one guy like this that named Aaron Crow before we non-tender him.

Too early to tell but with Capps' delivery it's fair for us as fans to assume and prepare for the worst scenario.

With that said, it's better that this happens now than during the season. We can't lose games in the standings in March.

If Capps is out, there's plenty of time to find a major league bullpen piece to replace him and still keep the pen strong. I'm not saying we'll acquire a Capps-level guy like Chapman or Kimbrel but we can get a solid arm and hope one of Barraclough, Breslow, McGowan, Ellington, Berry, Wittgren, etc steps up. Capps would be missed but he's not irreplaceable at this point in the year. I do question what we'd have to give up though.

Still, if this is what we think it is, there's plenty of time to fix this.

Given that we don't really have anything to give up, it wouldn't be much of a concern. Call up a team with a good bullpen arm, tell them to pick any player not on the 40 man roster, maybe even any two, and call it a deal.

Yes but my concern is that we overpay and give up something from the major league roster. So it's basically the opposite of your proposal that I worry about.

Matt Thornton is a free agent pickup I wouldn't hate. Anything to give Dunn some competition. I think that's the worst part about Capps' injury: it makes Mike Dunn the setup man by default. That's bad.

Agreed. Definitely wouldn't trade a 25-man roster guy for a relief pitcher. For that, throw Ellington, Barraclough, Wittgren, and all the rest at a wall and see which one sticks. Even elite relievers only add about two wins per season so it isn't worth giving up a solid player.

I think the Capps injury creates a few things we can assume: Ramos is the closer, Dunn and Morris slide up to setup roles, the odds of making the team have drastically increased for Brad Hand, Brian Ellington, Kyle Barraclough, Dustin McGowan, Craig Breslow, Nefi Ogando, and/or Tim Berry. If we acquire someone and who we acquire if so can obviously alter the previous assumptions.

Lets wait for the results before we get Capps' tombstone built ;)

Admin is the second opinion doctor. Not sure if that's good or bad yet.

Now that the deal of Morrison for Capps was no longer liked a steal.

Since the trade, by fWAR:

Capps: 1.6

Morrison: 0.9

We're still good.

I laughed way too hard at this.

I think Breslow had a good shot to make this team for the get go. Thornton would replace Breslow if he was signed.

If our culture was better capps wouldn't have gotten injured. Also, the diagnosis is likely death because culture of losing.

Carter Capps (death) was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. The Marlins called up potential "Michael Jordan of Baseball" Jose Urena to take his place.

Analysis: Despite Capps' death, the Marlins new analytics department concluded that he should be able to suit up as soon as his 15 day stint is up.
