May 29, 201610 yr Not sure what the Padres would want but if we could somehow get him cheap in exchange for taking on some salary, would do that in a second. This team is desperate for starting pitching.

May 29, 201610 yr We'd need them to take on A LOT of salary because his deal is backloaded $21MM this year and will make $21MM in each of the next two seasons, plus a $2MM buyout or a $16MM option for 2019. I'm guessing there is interest but it may be difficult to do with how much $$ we'd want them to send over. I doubt we have the talent to send back to make that feasible for them. I'm guessing other teams can beat it in terms of talent and/or requested $$.
May 29, 201610 yr big time declining velo, but he's dealing with it results wise. If marlins had any sort of shot at him they should obviously go for him
May 29, 201610 yr If they're happy with Hand, I'd send them over Urena and Nicolino and whomever else they may want from single A other than Naylor to get them to eat enough salary to get Shields at 3yrs/40M.

May 29, 201610 yr This would imply Loria actually giving a fuck He does want to win, that's a fact. He may go about it in a poor manner though.

May 29, 201610 yr No thanks. The Marlins don't have the pieces to encourage the Padres to eat that salary and I don't think that the Marlins should take on that much money ($42 million for 2017 and 2018) for him.
May 30, 201610 yr No thanks. The Marlins don't have the pieces to encourage the Padres to eat that salary and I don't think that the Marlins should take on that much money ($42 million for 2017 and 2018) for him. The problem is, the Marlins are a .500 team and they have a two year window to compete, since in 2018 the payroll balloons massively (40+ million compared to 2017). They need to add to the rotation. They can't trade talent for help and there's no good free agents next year, so that leaves trading for payroll for pitching. Which leaves somebody like James Shields. That's really about the only option. If they're not willing to do that, it's better to blow it up and start building the next core, because being a middling .500 team with no future is about the worst position to be in.
May 30, 201610 yr This is where Michael Hill being a complete failure at developing a farm system comes into play. With Jeff being in the bottom 5 in MLB payroll and probably bottom 5 in MILB payroll.... that doesnt exactly help or give you the pieces necessary to acquire players when you actually have a snowballs chance in hell of competing.
