And they'll show up in their Beckett jerseys they found buried in the closet and ask when he's pitchiing

This. And Reyes. You have no idea how many Reyes jerseys are hidden in this city. Worst of all how many of those people still think he plays here.

First, you don't seem to understand that media coverage isn't only about covering current events. It's about covering current events that people are interested in. The media will absolutely ignore the success of the team because people show resentment and don't care about it. There is no reason to create content that people don't want. This isn't complicated. People enjoy ripping on the marlins. So what do you think the media is going to do?

Fan interest and media coverage/perception lags team performance. All you need to do is look at 2003 attendance.

For what it's worth, this all started because Minervini took offense to Kuperstein saying that only 10% of the people down here knew Ichiro.

If that's the media's reaction to that story, the city doesn't have a Marlins problem; it just has a lack of interest in baseball. Whether you like the Marlins or not, Ichiro's story shouldn't be turned negative at all since he's a HOF'er chasing 3,000 hits here.

So, more specific to Ichiro and not just the Marlins... should the media have made a bigger a deal of Ichiro signing here in early 2015, re-signing last offseason, and his recent hot streak that made getting to 3,000 this season more likely?

Also, just an opinion, and I hope it isn't taken as an endorsement of Jeffrey Loria because I wish we had a different owner.

With that said, I think the local media has portrayed him unfairly, exaggerating negativities, and it's led many ignorant casual fans to hate everything Marlins.

He's run the organization poorly, but I think it has more to do with lack of intelligence rather than lack of interest. Similar to Ross, really. The way the media portrays this team as a firesale in the making/farm system to every other big league team is also unfair.

We lose because Loria runs the team like the annoying guy in fantasy leagues who keeps offering stupid trades, but I think he's proven that he cares about the team in his own way. I could have the wrong opinion about that, but he has rewarded successful players here especially since the opening of the new stadium. He never gets any credit for that, yet they crucify the organization for making deals that a lot of other baseball teams would make.

That makes fans lose interest.

This, all this, absolutely this.

If Loria walked on water the media would run a story saying Loria can't swim.

Fan loyalty will grow once the team has a sustained period of winning but it won't negate the fact that this is arguably the worst baseball city.

In the words of former President Reagan, "Here we go again".

I only knew about this site and joined since 2005. Been a fan since 95 though and started watching games exclusively in 1997 when I got cable. My dad had a feeling they would compete lol. I guess I missed the bandwagon.

I became a fan in 93 with the whole excitement of being able to watch a team since birth. In the early years I thought the team was the greatest thing ever no matter who was playing or what the results were, they were just MY team. Loved 97 of course but the 98 downfall came at an easy time/age in my life to be distracted (high school) and I fell out of watching the team consistently until the 03 team got hot. After we won that 03 title I was ashamed of missing the majority of 98-03. Because of my fandom from 93-97, I honestly didn't think I was one of the bandwagon fans who jumped on board only during the playoffs and I wasn't repeating that same mistake again. I vowed to keep up with this team through thick and thin knowing that even during down years, we'd be back on top again and I wanted to say I was there the whole way through. The still competitive teams of 04 & 05 helped tremendously (I'm not so sure I could have stuck to my word if the 04 team was like the 98 one). Once 2006 happened and I was able to enjoy following the team even when we weren't very good I knew I was officially in this for life. I know it's not the same watching a rebuilding team but once you're in this so deep I think most of us can agree there is a bit of joy in watching the scraps of junk growing into something useful. So that's basically my Marlins fan backstory.

Wow I feel young now @SilverBullet1929 lmao

97 I was in 5th grade and 2003 I was a junior in high school. The one year that sucked for me was 2005, I really thought the Marlins were going back to the playoffs. Even though they finished over .500 that season was a disappointment.
