Manso sounds off

This is kind of a sad discussion to begin with when you think about it. The team has already been here for 23 years, 25 if you count that it was officially born in July of 1991. I get the reasons why but you'd think there'd be more unified support after 25 years. Sadly it'll probably take another 20 or so years because what you'll need is the kids who grew up in the first 20 years of the team, to grow up as fans and then raise their kids as fans and it will be that generation that grew up having the team that will support them in the future moreso out of "this is just what we do in terms of baseball"... that's really what has happened with the Dolphins fanbase because it's not like the young adults of today really got to see any serious Dolphins success. The young adult Dolphins fans now are fans because their fathers/grandfathers were fans and taught them that the Dolphins are the football team we cheer for.

Good thing you teach Art and not Math

I understand it's a business but the news is supposed to be fair and unbiased. Maybe if they weren't so NOT fair and unbiased towards the Marlins then maybe people would care more about the team. The way the media paints the team goes a long way towards public perception so, as a die hard Marlins fan, I'd appreciate if they did more than nothing to help that perception.I'll never forget days after the 2012 trade with Toronto the local news aired some jackwad saying "I'm so mad because they traded away their five BEST players!!!" John Buck, Emilio Bonifacio, a regressing Josh Johnson... you can make a case for Reyes and Buerhle at the time but come on.

This.

The Marlins have done that too.

With that said, I understand squall's explanation. It doesn't help that a lot of the baseball fans down here already rooted for other teams before the Marlins existed.

very RARELY have the Marlins been in on the big FA names.  The dolphins are regularly in the hunt for the big FA names.  The Marlins occasionally dip their toes into the FA market but then typically counter that by trading them away within a couple years.  Granted, the trades usually end up being for the better but because of Loria's unwillingness to take on money to get better prospects back it's really just spinning the wheels without picking up traction and couple that with the "casual" fan that only sees names they recognize going away and unknowns coming back.  it's a bad recipe for sustained positive press like the Dolphins get each offseason regardless of their results.

Joe Rose called Minervini a little bitch this morning lol.

I do wish though that the local sports radio spent a bit more time talking about the Marlins. 560 is all Heat/Dolphins/with a small bit of Panthers due to the recent success. 790 is all Heat. Andy Slater does talk Marlins briefly on 940, but probably because he's forced to being 940 airs the games.

the only station I listen briefly in the morning is 790 and all they talk is Heat here, Heat there, 5-10 second Marlins and only to mentioned the score, and here and there Dolphins/Panthers when they were in the playoff. According to Zaslow he doesn't like Loria and that's why he doesn't mentioned the Marlins as much.

This idiot Manso tried to be funny by switching hats and helmets which were giving away by Burdines, he tried to be funny like here I support the Marlins look at all these hats, none were the current one

The only math art teachers should do is Red + Yellow = Orange.

That really is the only math I do. I specifically tell the kids to think of it as a math problem too.

Isn't covering the Dolphins a wate of time also? But people get jacked year after year. They are perennial 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 team. COL yet the news media says playoff likely or even super bowl potential

You give them way too much credit. They wish they were that consistently good.

Thank the salary cap for that.

I thought it was tasteless what Manso did to take that on air. We are all used to the media not giving the Marlins any coverage. They paint South Florida as a Dolphins town and now the Heat are taking over because of their continued stability and putting good teams out there.

I could see it changing some if and when the Marlins get a new ownership, but don't expect them to talk about them consistently until they start winning and making the playoffs.

It's really a self fulfilling prophecy. You can say media doesn't cover the Marlins enough because people don't care as much as you can say people don't care because the media doesn't cover the Marlins. Ratings on the Dolphins have been down the last few years due to the Dolphins sucking. Yet covering OTAs is more important.  If they didn't cover OTAs I bet you people wouldn't be begging them to.

Give the Marlins more coverage and people will care. Same way I feel about how shitty Miami bars will have on sports center over a Marlins or panthers game and if you ask to change it the staff gets flustered.

If there was demand for it, local media would cover it. As we all know the Marlins have a TERRIBLE PR problem. And it's all the organization's fault/well deserved. Not the media.

Ethan Skolnick mentioned this the other day (See below). You can't expect media to just cover the team when access sucks. The organization is terrible. And it's a shame because there's some great personalities and storylines with this team right now. But I'm not sure it's fair to blame the local media. The only thing that will solve it is winning. And sustained success.

@DutchBeek @Lauzin we have gotten one marlins player this season. we had to do it through a charity organization, not team.

Kinda like if they build a new ballpark people will care?

I would say it's actually the opposite of what you're saying. The self fulfilling prophecy was we're breaking apart the 2012 team because people won't show up to the stadium. Yet people don't show up because the team sucks. So breaking it up will make people show up less. People show up less it justifies them breaking up the team.

You can make people go to games or follow a team superficially. The team has to be good. It has to be consistent. Over time the fan base grows. You can't force people to like the marlins with longer news coverage, ballpark, blah blah.

Although this is true. Miami culture is unique. Right now it's trendy to hate the Marlins because of loria and the incorrect assumptions about the publicly funded stadium. The media only portrays the negative. Just give them fair coverage after a game. That's all. At least show more than just 1 highlight.

The only way to break the trend is to get positive media coverage for positive things the team does whether it's Ichiro or Fernandez or whoever. Then of course over time if the team starts to win and not trade away top players it'll start to change the culture. Like what's happening with the panthers.

I know this isn't media but when you go out to bars. Marlins games are never on. However I've noticed whenever someone asks for the game to be on. You see patrons start watching the games. Are interested in it and are shocked that the team is doing pretty well this year.

Long term change of culture has to be a culture of winning and we'll run organization. Short term local media can report positives not just negatives. People on the street think Stanton is getting traded this year. Culture has to change.

Usually cause that involves doing a little bit of work, tbh.

It's not trendy to hate the marlins. No one has ever really liked the marlins for an extended period of time. There has never been stability for this franchise. The most dependable thing about this team is that it will be cheap, great players will be traded, and ownership will do retarded shit. That is the marlins. Who isn't going to dislike that?Only way to break the trend is positive media coverage? lol no. The only way to break the trend is for the team to be good and ownership to not be an embarrassment. No one is going to lie about the marlins just to make them look better than they are. That would be retarded.

Marlins games aren't on because no one gives a shit about the team. Why don't they care? Because the team isn't good and ownership is a joke. If it's all thats on tv, of course people will watch.

People on the street are irrelevant at this point. They need to go through the fanbase conversion of bandwagon to legit fan. That isn't going to happen until the team is good for a period of time.

tl;dr You can PR a team into the hearts of a fanbase.

Ownership is a joke but team doesn't suck. That should be enough to qualify.

Truth. Feels to me like the media thinks the general resentment towards ownership is the perfect excuse to not cover the team even when they're doing well. "Oh they won 11 of 12? Meh, fans still hate Loria so fuck it, find out what the Dolphins are up to and lets talk about that."

The context of this thread isn't about just the past 2 months. The team has sucked for a long time. People aren't going to go nuts over a 500 team either.

I thought the context of this thread was exactly about the last 2 months.

Yeah. Marlins have had a better than you'd expect, positive start to 2016 and local news is still treating them like they're in last place and trading everyone away by this weekend. I'd say this absolutely is about the last two months.

True. Forgot that the original topic was about media coverage right now, although people still don't care about the team so why dedicate airtime to something viewers aren't interested in?

If the team is doing well people will be interested. So once they start showing signs of a positive season, it'd make sense to start providing coverage of it. The media can't just ignore any future success of the team just because people have shown resentment to them in the past. Its an extreme example but under your logic, if the team was in the World Series there wouldn't be any positive media coverage just because people didn't care in the past.

If we make it back to the World Series though, everyone was always the greatest Marlins fan ever.
