NOPE

Phelps did not magically become a better pitcher from one season to the next. The reason he has been so great this season is because he is being used as a reliever. If put back in the rotation, we can expect him to go back to the same guy he was before. It's the same reason people like me believe Tom Koehler, a mediocre (if we want to be kind) starter would be an excellent reliever. Will Phelps be moved into the rotation? Maybe, who knows? But should he be? No. He's finally found a role he can excel in, why change that? (Also, his left/right splits work better as a bullpen arm than as a starter)

I'm sure this is all accurate. Seems like it's a waste having him secure just the 7th inning now.   Not many opportunities there.

I think we're screwed on getting a great SP.  I said after last year that this team is one top pitcher away.  I think this again is true for next year.  But in all, this season should be a building block for next year.

Unless we can acquire a better option, all he has to be is better than Nicolino or Koehler.  I think he is.  Rodney makes him expendable in the bullpen.  We also have Ellington who can help pick up his slack in the pen.  We don't have anyone else that can help out the rotation in our system.   With better options, yes, Phelps is better used in the pen.  On this team however,  he might helps us better in the rotation.  If it doesn't work he can always go back to the pen.  He really can't do worse than Nicolino or Koehler.  Especially the Koehler of late.

True. It wouldn't hurt.  Seems like a waste for him to be just a set up for the set up man.

The splits that was mentioned from song is a bit of a problem though. If it's true he would be more valuable in the pen and fatigue would really be a mute point.

He was a mediocre starter and even with his trouble lately he has become a solid setup man. It's not even like he's just become a decent mop up guy. He's found a groove as a one inning guy, he'd eventually get lit up again as a starter. There's no way you move him back to the rotation. Also it would take time to build his arm and innings back up, it'd be like spring training all over again for him. No way.

Phelps has never pitched more than 113 innings. Even as a starter.  Last year he pitched 112.  He is on pace for 94 this year.  That's not much of a drop off

So the question still remains.

Tk in the pen would have a renaissance year.

But on topic nah dawg leave him in the pen.

No, he should not be in the rotation.

He also should not be a 1 inning guy out of the bullpen. He's a guy who should be giving us 2-3 innings per appearance out of the pen. We don't need him as a setup anymore.

I've been saying it now for a long time, but the Marlins have the type of staff where a bullpen game every 5th day would be way better than a traditional 5th starter.

Probably not, but the Marlins need someone to step up in the rotation, with Rodney now in the 8th inning role and Barraclaugh pitching fairly well it wouldn't be the worst thing to give Phelps a shot at the rotation. Not sure I like the idea of a bullpen day, especially with Koehler in the rotation there's always a possibility of a bullpen day!

One inning at a time is way different than 5-7 innings at a time. Doesn't matter that the final innings total might be close.

We already have bullpen days every five days, they're Tom Koehler's starts.

Thinking outside of the box.  I like it. Very LaRussa-esque.

What we should do is acquire another starter & make Koehler a 2-3 inning pitcher too for the 5th day.

I think realistically, we can do...

1. Jose

2. Conley

3. Chen

4. SP trade

5. Koehler/Phelps (each guy pitches 2-3 innings on the 5th day)

It wouldn't be a problem. If anything, carry an extra reliever (so, call up Ellington) and demote a position player (Gillespie) who does nothing.

Jorge De La Rosa. Cheap to acquire, loads of potential left.

On what planet does 35-year-old Jorge De La Rosa, he of the 5.50 ERA, have "loads of potential left?"

You can't look at ERA. Look at numbers that really matter. JDLR could absolutely help this team.

Maybe, but you said he has "loads of potential."

Yeah I know what I said. He could help our rotation therefore he is a potential upgrade therefore he has potential. #ReadingComprehension.

Load means a lot. Like when someone blows a load all over your face for being a troll.
