For what it's worth, it might not seem like it because I haven't been annoying about it, but I hated the Cashner deal when it happened.

I didn't think Rodney would be this bad and I was fine with that deal.

Same here.  Never thought Cashner was any good but I thought Rodney would help an overworked pen

And trust me I loved Paddack. Couldn't stop raving about him this season. But he has no major league value for another three years. He's much more valuable to a team like the Padres, who are planning a long term rebuild, than a Marlins squad that went all in for 2015/2016 and will have to re-prioritize things going into next season.

Not being snippy here but how do they prioritize? I keep hearing free agent market sucks and we have no farm system.  Doubt Loria spends a lot to improve on our 28th lowest payroll and if he gets anyone it will be cheap crap that we have to hope plays way above expectations

Only option is trading value for value. Meaning making guys like ramos, ozuna, dietrich, bour and maybe even a bigger piece available via trade

Either that or standing put and making minor moves that will barely change next year's team

Thus why I said the idea was greater than the execution. The front office knew the closing window and saw a resource available in Rodney. They went for a trade that a team that isn't competing wouldn't think of doing.

I also argue against Paddack being our top trade chip. He was good, but he was 20 years old in low A ball with 6 starts. Paddack was also an 8th round pick, so it isn't like he started out with 1st round value. I'm actually surprised at the time of the trade that Paddack alone was able to net Rodney in an All Star year. But then again the Padres knew Paddack probably had long term value.

Then again, they didn't account for his hard throwing inevitably leading to arm problems and TJ surgery.

Like I said, bitch about this trade all you want but it doesn't make a difference now. Paddack won't pitch again until likely 2018 and won't see the majors until 2020 at the earliest. More likely 2021. Does this front office even have a plan for 2021? Are we even sure this front office will be around to see 2021 if they didn't win this season?

I followed Paddack's short minor league career more than most here, and I think he has a bright future, but the trade wasn't bad at the time for what Paddack was at the time of the trade and what Rodney was at the time of the trade. And now with Paddack injured, both the Marlins and the Padres suffered from making that trade. There are no winners here and isn't worth complaining about. We didn't lose it because Paddack's value diminished (similarly to how Domingo German's value died after we traded him to the Yankees and he hurt his arm). Based on NOW value, it's a net gain of zero and a net loss of zero.

Cashner is one worth complaining about more given the fact that Naylor and Capps will be playing next season. Plus the way this board talks about Capps you would think he saved 50 games this season and had an ERA under 1. He's a greatly talented player with a unique delivery that lends itself to arm problems and inconsistencies. He's great value for a team but also an incredible risk. That said I didn't like the trade.

I disagree.

In terms of the minor leagues, Paddack and Naylor were probably the most sought after pieces. The fact that the Padres got Paddack one for one for Rodney gives a strong indication that Paddack had considerable value.

The idea of the trade was bad because they went for relief help earlier on when it was obvious they needed a SP. And buy doing so the Marlins squandered one of their more valuable pieces.

Cashner was and remains a turd to be flushed at the end of the year.  Agreed.

But why oh why can't you people understand that Paddack AT THE TIME of the trade (not now, injured) was a valuable commodity.  One that, when packaged with other talent, could have yielded players we really needed (i.e. A much better starter than Cashner).

If we would've traded Paddack for a SP, everyone would've hated that one too considering all the SP's on the market sucked, Cashner included.

The Rodney trade was fine in terms of value.

I have no idea.

Well the Rodney trade I was against because we were using our best chip to bolster a strength on our team. And I was also skeptical that Rodney would sustain his success.

I was against the Cashner trade for obvious reasons, as I'm sure you all agree with.

People keep calling the bullpen a strength, but the reality is that the whole entire bullpen has fallen apart. It really wasn't that strong, especially when you consider that we had to use Phelps as a starter later on.

The "we should've traded Paddack for a SP instead" crowd never mention the SP they wanted in return for Paddack. The market for mediocre SP's was ridiculous. Look at what Cashner cost us.

Who was the best SP available? Drew Pomeranz? He cost Boston Anderson Espinosa who is waaaaaaayyyyy better than Paddack. We weren't getting a good SP for Paddack.

At the time we had Ramos, Phelps, and Barraclough all pitching extremely well for a while. And trading for Rodney made us send down Ellington. So which has more value:

-Rodney

or

-Ellington and the opportunity cost of trading Paddack

I thought the second had more value at the time and thats shown to be true since Ellington has been better than Rodney.

Ellington's also an inexperienced guy due for some major regression.

Even if what you say is true, we were in position to buy. Assuming you thought we needed a SP way more, who were we getting as a SP that was going to help us make the playoffs?

Hellickson probably would have been attainable. And making that trade probably stops us from making the other disaster trade with the Padres.

It's impossible to say what would have happened but I'd be willing to bet big money that we'd be a better team (now and in the future ) if we hadn't made the Rodney trade and subsequently the Cashner trade.

Hellickson probably would have been attainable.

Impossible to know for sure since he wasn't even traded. He's also not very good.

Better than Cashner. (And Rodney)

Not really. He's been a mediocre pitcher his whole entire career. If you take away his dominance against the Marlins this year, he's just had another mediocre season.

I'm guessing he also wasn't available since the Marlins did want him. If the Marlins wanted Hellickson as the guy, they didn't need Paddack to get him, I'm guessing. They could've just offered what they offered SD for Cashner.

The Rodney/Paddack deal didn't prevent the Marlins from getting a mediocre SP like Hellickson. For what it's worth, we'd be just as pissed had we acquired Hellickson considering he's been garbage since the trade deadline and he would've been a rental, as well. We would still be saying "fire Hill" had he traded for Hellickson.

Since his last start against the Marlins on 7/25 when he dominated (because what pitcher doesn't dominate our lineup?), Hellickson has pitched 35.1 innings with a 4.59 ERA. In line with his mediocre career.

Assuming we could've traded Paddack for Hellickson straight up (which I'm pretty sure isn't the case), we would still be pissed as a fanbase because Hellickson, like all the SP's  who were available (was he even available? They never traded him), sucks.

Being mad at the Rodney deal is basically being mad that they tried to win this year. A bunch of deals like that were made at the deadline. The Cashner deal, on the other hand, seemed like a desperation move. Hopefully Capps doesn't come back pitching like he did last year or else they'll look really stupid (they already are stupid, so whatever).

And why can't you understand that despite how good his stats were he was a low level  prospect who was years away.  He played 11 games in ROOKIE ball and 6 in SINGLE A.  Paddack only started in 13 of 17 games and pitched 70 innings. You really wanna believe he will be a superstar based on that?

He could still get his ass kicked in AA or AAA

Seriously, the guy was not a top prospect.
