Conley, Peters, Garcia among cuts

I have no problem with Alcantara making the team and would like to see one other spot go to Caleb Smith.

Beyond pathetic hag Justin Nicolino is still an option. Probably worse than the fact they chose him over Aaron Sanchez and Noah Syndergaard.

Sandy didn't have the best outing today... hopefully it's enough for them to hold him down.

But he did battle through it.  Not surprising his former catcher was the one doing all the damage .

Brinson is a lock to make it IMO.

Brinson has 21 games of ML service. Unless you’re planning on sending him to AAA as a 24-year-old into early July, so that he’s not arb eligible until he’s about to turn 27, you put him in CF and forget about him until Sierra is ready, at which time he moves to a corner OF spot until he becomes too expensive for the Marlins. If he’s not worthy of a long-term extension by the time he’s 27, then who the hell will care?

that's simply not accurate.  you keep him in AAA until the middle of may and you get an extra year of team control.  I dont care about when he becomes arbitration eligible so i could care less about the super 2 deadline, but it is stupid to have him up when you could get an extra year of team control on him in his prime if all we do is keep him down for a month and a half in a lost season.

Plus, his spring numbers are great and all, but a 13/2 K/BB ratio doesnt strike me as something that is repeatable at the MLB level without those other numbers coming down.  He is technically MLB ready, but just let him go to AAA for a month to improve his plate discipline a little more, suck it up for a month or so with Maybin in CF, and then bring him up in May.  They almost assuredly wont do that at this point, but thats stupid.

Dont even get me started on how stupid Alcantara starting in the MLB rotation would be too.  The front office fucked up these last few weeks not signing an MLB starter on a cheap deal for a year.

If you’re only sending him down for a month you won’t clear the 2+ class. The 21 games last year probably pushes that threshold into July. I’d argue that wasting him in AAA for 3 months at age 24 is worse than keeping him under our control at age 30...

I'm not sure which one was really good to us.

Best case scenario is still signing a veteran innings eater (Hellickson?)

The Nationals have agreed to a minor-league deal with righty Jeremy Hellickson, per ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick (via Twitter). He’ll receive an invitation to join the MLB side of camp.

again, you are wrong.  IF you keep him down until the middle of may you get an extra year of team control. Im not referring to when he starts going into arbitration.

Last year the super-2 cutoff was 2 years plus 86 days on the ML roster. That’s less than 3 months. Take away the time from last year - 21 games plus off days active - and he’s going to be arb-eligible in ‘21 unless you hold him out for most of this year.

I think you're missing the point. Being a Super 2 is irrelevant. Having another year of control is what matters.

If you call him up May 8th (give or take a day), he will end the season with under 1 year of service time. It'll be about .171 days of service time (172 being a full year. League calendar year is 182 days, so they build in a freebie 10 days there).

End of 2018, .171 days

End of 2019, 1.171 days

End of 2020, 2.171 days, Arb 1 as a Super 2 for 2021

End of 2021- 3.171, Arb 2

End of 2022 - 4.171, Arb 3

End of 2023 - 5.171. This is what is being argued. He does not have 6 years of service time. You have control for 2024 as he is under 6 years, and he gets a 4th year of arbitration year.

End of 2024 - 6.171 - Free Agency

Yes, this is literally how you are reading this - he is not a free agent by 1 day. If you're wondering, Kris Bryant has 2.171 days of service time right now. Cubs did this exact plan with him.

If Brinson is up before May 8th, give or take, he gets to 6 years by the end of 2023 and you don't get him in 2024. I agree, it would be ridiculous to keep him down until July to avoid being a Super 2, but these next 6 weeks dictate if you get him in 2024 or not. It's a big deal.

This concept also applies to Anderson, Peters, Alcantara, J. Garcia, and Conley, but is most important with Brinson as the # 1 asset in the organization at this time.

At this point, the conversation is irrelevant.

The organization is dumb, and we all know Brinson already made the team.

Any chance the Marlins give Brinson the Opening Day spot and use it as a way to say that they're not tanking? Showing that wins are more important to them than service time? It's dumb but maybe that's the stance they take.

Oh without a doubt that’s the reasoning if he makes the opening day roster. Which at this point, he probably will. They let him get WAY too far into a very successful spring training to justify that he “needs more time”. So since he had a great spring, they pretty much have to keep him on the roster or the media eats them up.

I hope they put Hernandez into the rotation at the very least to start the year. Got nothing to lose, if he stinks just throw him into the bullpen and hope to hide him for a year until they can send him down for some more minor league seasoning next year.

Brinson and anderson will make the team almost assuredly, but the guy who I think can not make the team under any circumstances is Alcantara.  Him being sent down wouldnt even be about service time, its about the fact that he's not ready yet and could benefit from more minor league action for a few months.  Having him up just because the front office didnt take the necessary steps to sign a few veterans to fill the rotation for a few months would be a major screw up.

Braves sent down Acuna today.

Marlins need to stop being idiots, plain and simple.

Looks like you got your wish with Alcantara today!

I'm hoping there's zero chance he goes all the way to '24 without a long-term deal, which is why I discounted this line of thinking.  If he's as good as we hope he'd be breaking the arb bank before then. If we don't have a long-term deal with him at that point it's because he's not as good as we thought he'd be and I'd assume that at that point he'd be a fringe player behind the #1-#2 draft picks we get over the next 2 years and Monte Harrison and whoever we get for Realmuto in July. Or, of course, we could still be too cheap to pay players, at which case my opinion here won't matter because I probably won't be here. Anyway, if we don't have a deal for him before your '25 FA, he'll be pushing 32 and it won't make much of a difference.

I was reading an article (no link, but pretty sure it was mlbtr) where agents were starting to switch their thinking to having their clients sign extensions early on to guarantee that they get paid because of this current free agent market. I think this off-season is the one that finally “fixes” free agency. Cause it was honestly running a muck for quite some time now. With that said, maybe this whole arbitration and team control conversation is about to lose its relevenacy.

Think this might be what you saw: http://www.espn.com/blog/buster-olney/insider/post/_/id/18312/olney-why-some-young-players-may-increasingly-jump-at-long-term-offers

Extensions are better for everyone I think. Well except for agents. But it's better for teams and for fans and, in most cases, better for players too. The only players it doesn't benefit as much would be guys like Trout and Harper who can easily command the world in free agency and who are good enough to get it no questions asked.

Ozuna was offered an extension and turned it down, no guarantee they take it.

Gotta preserve the year.
