Maybe he's signing under slot, but not drastically? That's all I'm saying. The fact that they signed him so quickly indicates that they probably had a clear idea that he would sign under slot when they drafted him--as if they had some kind of understanding on terms with him already (and yes, the fact that he's from the Tampa area probably put him on Denbo's radar). He was probably on the Marlins short list and other names could have been grabbed already, but this still implies to me that the Marlins didn't draft Gorman or Singer because of money reasons. I'm not bent out of shape about this, because there is so much uncertainty with the draft that guys like Gorman or Singer might not even pan out, but this pick screams of being one made because of signability/below slot.

 

I'm guessing they'll need to save $ on the Scott and/or Johnson picks in order to go above slot for the highly-ranked Vandy commit they got in the 3rd.

I agree the decision to draft a guy like Singer vs. Scott is definitely financially motivated. But the issue isn't whether or not the Marlins are willing to spend $ on the draft. It's do you want to spend like 60% +  of your bonus pool on just Brady Singer, or would you rather put that towards Scott + one or two others.

That is what amazes me. The ones calling it financially based are acting like it is the Marlins being cheap. That isn't it. They have limited resources they are allowed to use and multiple needs.

not the strategy but the speed with which they signed scott was refreshing. We would always foolishly haggle for like 2 months with first round picks and sign them at the last second and never play them in the year they get drafted.
