Marlins Sign Brandon Kintzler

Featured Replies

Kintzler and Strop are very different pitchers. Having both in the bullpen would have been nice, but if we had to pick one, I'm glad it was Kintzler. I just hope Mattingly uses him correctly (he won't).

He’s probably going to close like he did with the Twins before. What exactly is the correct way of using him?

If he closes, that's fine. A veteran like him is a strong option to lock things down in a young volatile-but-high-upside bullpen. If not though, Kintzler is amazing against left handed hitters. Like...better than most lefty specialists. With that not being a role anymore this season, Kintzler should be the guy for later innings with big lefty bats coming up. He's by far the best pitcher the Marlins have against lefty batters. But, as far as Donnie Bullpen is concerned, Adam Conley throws with his left hand, so he must be better than Brandon Kintzler, who throws with his right.

Part of the reason why Mattingly can’t be that creative is because the bullpen as a whole isn’t that good.

This is true, but it's also because he's set on the old school notion of eye test. The eye test and tradition both say that righties can't get lefties out but that lefties can. Disregard stats, eyes only.

Oh man it's gonna be fun this year seeing him with the three batter minimum.

I don’t think Don Mattingly is any worse than most managers to be honest. But maybe I’m wrong.

Every fan base is certain their manager is hopeless at bullpen management. It's an armchair quarterback-type trope. Mattingly isn't bad at reliever usage. It's just easy to say he is because every time the reliever struggles (which has been in often, given the talent levels) it looks bad on Mattingly.

We really haven't had any meaningful games yet so I can't really think of any specific times Mattingly mismanaged the bullpen. I know he has, but I just can't remember. Therefore, I have no opinion.

I said it many times, good relief pitchers pitched good in all the situations, bad relief pitchers pitched bad in all the situations.

Poor job by the editor to not see that and correct it. Assuming they have an editor.

You know - I thought I did a good job there. Most of the time, I feel as if I'm writing well. I wrote that, proofed it, missed the obvious flub, and published it. I continually and carefully monitor each story's performance, and revisit them for later edits as needed.

That major vs. minor thing....should have been obvious. I feel like an idiot for missing it.

I work really hard to grow traffic to my blog. I write over 30,000 words a month - every month. I know I make errors, but I do try very hard to keep them to a minimum. To answer your question - no I do not have an editor.

If you wouldn't mind in the future, could you dm me when you find these errors? I don't think I make very many, but I'm only human after all. I'm saying that I'm not perfect. Sometimes I miss things and could use a little help.

"Miami Marlins acquired both outfielder Matt Joyce and relief pitcher Brandon Kintzler on minor league deals. Both deals are of the major league variety"

Anybody know what's this !?

Yeah they're both major league deals. I don't know why I wrote that or how it got past the proofing stage. Thanks for the heads up, but would you consider dm'ing me next time you find a glaring error like that one?

@yxnarbo i didn’t mean to insult or anything there. Everyone makes mistakes. There are national articles with obvious errors. It happens.

No offense taken, really! All sarcasm aside, I love you guys here.

I know this place runs on sarcasm and vitriol, but I just want to take a moment here to thank you for running such a great place for Marlins fans to complain and congratulate. There aren't enough of us as it is - and this is a perfect platform for everyone whether they want to break down a trade, give someone hell, or just celebrate when things finally, blessedly, go right.

Kintzler says the Marlins were the most aggressive team after him, the others were "playing poker" waiting idly for other moves, and that the Marlins made him feel most wanted here.

He also complimented the front office and the way they're doing things which every new signing says but some of his words definitely gave me that feeling that our front office is so much better now. It doesn't feel like that half ass Loria way.
