Matt Joyce has a higher xwOBA than Brinson (.319 vs .305), as well as a long established ability to hit RHP. Sure, Brinson has a nice last 18 PA against RHP, but that Sept. 163 wRC+ has a .455 BABIP. It's the very definition of small sample theater.

I'm fine with Brinson getting more playing time, and he has been, but in must-win games, Joyce sounds like the safer bet here.

(But really, even this current move. We have a double header tomorrow and no off days ever again. We're up 5 runs, and he goes to the top 7th inning arm we have. A few days ago, against the 2nd worst bullpen in baseball, he went to the mop-up reliever while we were down just 2 runs. We were then almost immediately down 5 runs.

xWOBAcon however has Brinson higher at .403 to Joyce's .384. Joyce strikes out a little less, that's it.

Brinson also wins in xBA (.261 to .229), xSLG (.398 to .356), barrel % (7.3 to 4.2), hard hit percentage (36.4 to 28.2 [btw that 28.2 is ... really bad]) ... I can go on a bit, Joyce should not be in the lineup at a semi consistent rate at all.

If you could have a reliever on the team who would give up exactly one run every inning that he pitched, would you think he'd deserve a roster spot? His ERA would be 9.00, which is VERY bad, but I think he'd be a very useful member of a bullpen. Of course, I would say no if Mattingly were still the manager, because he'd mismanage the shit out of him and put him into one run games consistently.

Brinson at .277... With more experience and if he could show good contact rate could be a #1 or #2 hitter in the line-up with his speed
