Opening Day Lineup Predictions

Featured Replies

What do you think the Opening Day lineup will look like?

What I think might happen because Mattingly is the manager:

1. Jose Ureña SS

2. Jose Ureña 2B

3. Jose Ureña CF

4. Jose Ureña 1B

5. Jose Ureña 3B

6. Jose Ureña LF

7. Jose Ureña C

8. Jose Ureña RF

9. Heath Bell SP

My actual prediction:

1. Corey Dickerson LF

2. Starling Marte CF

3. Jesus Aguilar 1B

4. Adam Duvall RF

5. Brian Anderson 3B

6. Jorge Alfaro C

7. Miguel Rojas SS

8. Jazz Chisholm 2B

9. Sandy Alcantara SP

1. Corey Dickerson LF

2. Starling Marte CF

3. Jesús Aguilar 1B

4. Adam Duvall RF

5. Brian Anderson 3B

6. Jorge Alfaro C

7. Jazz Chisholm 2B

8. Miguel Rojas SS

9. Sandy Alcántara SP

Miggy Ro is the more professional hitter and so I like him in front of the pitcher spot over Jazz. Also thought about switching BA and Aguilar, but Mattingly has been using Jesús in the 3 hole so he'll probably do that instead.

Most likely scenario:

1. Corey Dickerson - LF

2. Starling Marte - CF

3. Jesus Aguilar - 1B

4. Adam Duvall - RF

5. Brian Anderson - 3B

6. Jorge Alfaro - C

7. Jazz Chisolm - 2B

8. Miguel Rojas - SS

9. Sandy Alcantara - SP

--------------------------------------------------------------

If I was the manager and could choose the lineup:

1. Jon Berti - 2B

2. Starling Marte - CF

3. Jesus Aguilar - 1B

4. Adam Duvall - LF

5. Garrett Cooper - RF

6. Brian Anderson - 3B

7. Jorge Alfaro - C

8. Jazz Chisholm - SS

9. Sandy Alcantara - SP

I fully agree with you and think that Miggy should be in the 8 spot, but remember: Don Mattingly. How many times have we seen struggling players end up in the 8 spot because that dude has no idea how to put a lineup together?

If I could make my own Opening Day lineup:

1. Jazz Chisholm 2B

2. Starling Marte CF

3. Garrett Cooper RF

4. Adam Duvall LF

5. Brian Anderson 3B

6. Jesus Aguilar 1B

7. Miguel Rojas SS

8. Literally Just A Net Behind The Plate C

9. Sandy Alcantara SP

Geez, midseason form with the needless Donnie jabs.

I am stunned, frankly, with your mastery of lineup writing that an MLB team hasn't snapped you up yet to manage a team.

I believe Rojas had the majority of his at bats in the 8th spot last year and he didn’t struggle so that kinda disputes that.

Hoping:

1. Jazz 2B

2. Marte CF

3. Cooper RF

4. Aguilar 1B

5. Duvall LF

6. Anderson 3B

7. Catcher

8. Miggy

9. Pitcher

Rojas is a different type of hitter than a guy like Jazz or Brinson though. A guy like Rojas is ideal for the 8 spot because he's the exact kind of hitter that won't chase pitches outside the strike zone.

I know, it's literally so unfair.

(to be clear: could I do a better job at managing the Marlins than Don Mattingly? Absolutely, unequivocally NO. Could I put together a better starting lineup for one baseball game and manage the bullpen better for one game when every pitcher was healthy, rested, and had his best stuff? Yes. But that's now how real baseball works. All that being said, I think Don Mattingly is an AMAZING manager before the game begins and after the game ends. He has a lot that he can improve upon regarding in-game decisions though. A LOT.)

Rojas has hit very well the last couple of years. Why does everyone want him 8th?

The most important part of lineup construction is getting your best hitters the most at-bats. That happens by putting them at the top of the lineup.

If I were the decider, I’d go something like:

1. Marte

2. Rojas

3. Anderson

4. Cooper

5. Aguilar

6. Duvall

7. Alfaro

8. Chisholm

Aguilar, Duvall, and Cooper are more or less interchangeable in my mind.

NO!

1. Aguilar

2. Cooper

3. Anderson

You want your three slowest guys at the top of course.

4. Pitcher

Gotta sacrifice em in.

After that it doesn't matter.

My original comment showed the distinction disproving your idea that Mattingly doesn’t know how to put a lineup together.  You said, he only puts “struggling players” in the 8th spot.  However last year, Miggy started in that role and had more ABs batting 8th.

I like your lineup btw.  But wouldn’t you say you are guilty of what you preach. You have Alfaro batting 8th. I’m assuming because he’s the most “struggling player” and you then put Miggy in the 7th spot?

Im not the biggest fan of Mattingly constructing a lineup either. Just make a more accurate case.

What I’m expecting:

1. Dickerson LF

2. Marte CF

3. Aguilar 1B

4 Duvall RF

5. Anderson 3B

6. Chisholm 2B

7. Rojas SS

8. Alfaro C

SP

——————————————————-

What I would do:

1. Marte CF

2. Dickerson LF

3. Cooper 1B

4. Duvall RF

5. Anderson 3B

6. Chisholm 2B

7. Rojas SS

8. Alfaro C

Andy would beat Dickerson in a foot race.

You make a good point, but honestly I put Alfaro 8th because I think he's a bad hitter no matter what and won't be able to improve much. Someone like Jazz (or, previously Brinson) has upside and batting 8th could harm that. Alfaro is who he is: a guy who will run into a home run now and then, but is otherwise just a dude who HAS to be in the lineup because someone has to catch the pitches that pitchers throw.

It’s really not that critical who bats 8th and with no DH there’s not much Donnie can do.  I agree with you about Jazz for the same reason you do. He should never bat 8th unless he first implodes and you have no choice.  Tomorrow, if he starts in the 8th spot then that’s on Donnie and we can agree on that.

If Miggy doesn’t bat 8 it may attribute to not having the DH this year.  I don’t see why he wouldn’t based on the spring training lineups.

Any predictions on who is the first off the bench to pinch hit (or be put in as a double switch?)

I want to say Berti, but he's so versatile defensively that it might be better to not waste him for a single at bat.

Soooo....Cooper is my guess.
