I like the front office moves so far

It's a shame that the back office never gets any coverage but oh well.

If anything this is like the third consecutive move that shows Kim does know what needs to be done... her issue is actually getting it done as far as the roster.

All the Ng h8rs sure are quiet these days 😈

As soon as she finds batteries for the clock, she'll have time to mess things up.

Who, knows, maybe there was something to the "too many cooks in the kitchen" thing with Jeter, Denbo, and Ng all with various percentages of decision making power.

She has a lot of ground to make up for before I can overlook the numerous uninformed comments (Garcia 30-hr/year, Soler OBP, etc), and "autopilot" approach to managing the roster in-season (i.e. leaving the team shorthanded for weeks on end).

BUT, the couple non-roster moves thus far have been in the positive direction.

Bingo. She has a looooooooong way to go to prove she can actually be a GM for an MLB team.  I still have both feet planted firmly in the Ng h8r club.  Retaining Mel was a no-brainer decision that anyone on this board would have also done.  I'm waiting to see if she continues to have no clue about her own players and if she can actually perform the day-to-day stuff that every GM should be able to do and that she has failed at so far.

this could very well be the best news we see in the offseason.

Honestly I think the Ocampo hire could be the biggest thing. Mel is awesome but he's been here and we've still sucked. I'm hoping Ocampo gives Kim the extra voice needed to point her moves in the right direction.

Without letting Kim off the hook it's pretty much guaranteed that there's something to that. That doesn't mean she's gonna automatically be great on her own but it's something.

I kinda look at it as "would you rather have Ocampo or keep Mel?"  I'm taking Mel all day long over an assistant GM.

She needs to focus on the roster after the WS. Games are won on the field. This team has not gotten better.

Sure but retaining a great coach who could have left, bringing in a successful assistant GM, and making what seems to be a good managerial hire are all great steps as well. Shouldn't exactly ignore those.

Also the changes on the medical staff and the changes in the minor leagues and in player development could also help as well. It's a big puzzle and the smaller pieces are important as well.

On the more humorous side, the fact that Kim accomplished three important things before Halloween seems monumental to me!

She might even have time to go trick or treating tonight!

No.

Mel's contract was up. He was friends with Mattingly and was here because of him and may not have wanted to stay without him. Even with Mel's successes the team has been failing. Those successes could have also opened him up to offers from other teams, as well as from outside of MLB. The new manager could have also preferred choosing his pitching coach. Mel may have requested higher pay and Sherman could have refused that. Also, Kim Ng has made several colossal fuck ups.

It was not a given that Mel would be returning.
