It'll be interesting to see how he does.  The Angels are desperate to try to do anything to win for Ohtani.

Marlins had chance to draft him as he was the next pick after Noble Meyer.

I thought at the time (and still do) he would have been a great pick. But well it was good for him to be drafted by the Angels. He is getting called up to MLB the same season he was drafted. I’m sure it’s happened before but this is the first time I’ve ever seen that at least that I can remember. If the Marlins drafted him he would be chilling at AA/AAA until at least 2025 or later, even if he was tearing it up down there. Because Marlins.

Dave Winfield was in MLB the day after he was signed following the draft. He didn't spend a day in the minors.

That was a June draft and he made his debut in that same June.

yeah i don't ever recall someone being pulled up THIS quickly..I remember Mike Leake pitching for the Reds (i think) at the start of the season following him being drafted but never being called up just a few weeks after being drafted.

 

edit: and yes, the Marlins would keep him there no matter what for awhile because Ng and Co. still seem hung up on "VeTs ArE aLwaYs BetTur"

dunno if it's really a service time thing or a mindset or a bit of both but they really do seem loathe to play younger guys that are doing well in the minors over "vets" who are shit and have been shitty

Yeah! Well Winfield was definitely a once in a generation type talent. The dude was drafted by the NBA, MLB and NFL even though he didn’t play a game of college football. 😂

And was drafted as a pitcher but the Padres wanted his bat in the lineup everyday so they stuck him in RF. 😂

Of course if the Marlins had drafted him they would send him directly to low A rookie ball for a couple of years and keep Avi in RF. 😂

You would think by now the Marlins would have noticed. But nope.. still in that lineup. 😂

This is probably not good for his development. Hopefully he's advanced enough to hang around, but I keep thinking about how the Tigers may have damaged Jacob Turner by rushing him to the majors...

His bat is ridiculously advanced and went through the collegiate level with some summer ball mixed in.

Turner was a high school kid and his velo just plummeted rapidly. Believe he was throwing 98 when he got drafted and by the time we got him, it was down to like 92-95 range.

There's a reason this doesn't happen very often. Couple this with the fact that the Angels are desperate to not squander Ohtani's last season in LAA, and I think it's likely we'll look back at this and say it wasn't the right move. 

There are adjustments to be made off the field too. The travel, the daily games, the press. It's a lot.

For sure. But I think, personally, and I may end up wrong, that he's got a good enough grasp on hitting that he'll be fine.

If he doesn't exceed the limits, maybe 2024 AL ROTY.
