January 25, 200422 yr I agree. All this "Pudge will return to the Marlins" talk is wasted. The mods should move these Pudge-to-the-Tigers threads to the MLB forum. I agree!
January 26, 200422 yr DETROIT ? The Pudge Rodriguez plot ? or soap opera as Dmitri Young called it ? took a new twist Saturday in the form of support for Brandon Inge, the Tigers? incumbent catcher. During the annual TigerFest at Joe Louis Arena, Young and Bob Cluck, the Tigers? pitching coach, came out in favor of Inge over Rodriguez, who is waiting for the Tigers to reply to the offer his agent, Scott Boras, submitted Friday. ?This may not be a popular thing, but I don?t care whether we get Pudge Rodriguez or not,? Cluck said. ?This guy (Inge) is my guy, and I want him to be our catcher. If my bosses get mad, that?s the way it goes, this is my catcher.? But the uncertainty surrounding the Tigers? catching situation could continue. General Manager Dave Dombrowski said Saturday there still is no deadline in negotiations with Rodriguez. ?We don?t have a time frame,? he said. ?We?ve not set any specific limits. I think it?s more a situation where you?d like to set your club as quickly as you can, but there?s been no time limits set so far. I have a decent relationship with Scott Boras ? but that doesn?t help in this case.? The length of the contract, thought to be four years, isn?t a problem, Boras said. However, the economics have not been agreed upon. According to one published report, Rodriguez is seeking more than the $40 million the Associated Press reported last week the Tigers have offered him. ?We?re having a chance to digest the information (that Boras sent them), and we?ll just react from there,? Dombrowski said. ?There?s no question he?d make us a better ballclub, so we?ll continue to tackle it and see what happens. If this one doesn?t work, we are committed to being in a position to pursue players that will make us better.? In any case, being that it?s political primary time, Inge has won some delegates. ?If we get Pudge, cool,? Young said, ?but I want Inge behind the plate. If it changes, I have no control over that, but me, myself, I want Inge behind the plate.? Thursday, Young said he was excited at the prospect of the Tigers signing Rodriguez, and he still is ? ?It would be like getting a No. 3 hitter? ? but he thinks he did a hard-working teammate a disservice with his comments. When Inge defended himself Thursday, Young said, ?That woke me up. It wasn?t right of me to say, ?I hope we get Pudge? when Brandon is trying to prove himself. ?I put myself in his shoes. He had to feel alone. Besides if we get our hopes up, then Pudge decides he?s going elsewhere, where is that going to leave us? I think we?re going to contend anyway.? But which of the two, Rodriguez or Inge, will be the Tigers? starting catcher this year? ?My gut says Inge,? Young answered. Cluck is pulling for that outcome, too. ?I?m not anti-Pudge,? Cluck said, ?I?m just pro-Brandon. We work so well together. I?m very happy with the way his work with the pitching staff is going. Defensively, he?s on a par with Pudge. Offensively, there?s no argument. ?We (Cluck and Inge) keep things light,? he told Tigers? broadcaster Dan Dickerson during an interview aired on WXYT. ?On the way in from the bullpen, we?re cracking jokes. We need to make Jeremy Bonderman and others laugh and relax on the way in. We?re pretty good at that.?a Inge said he appreciates the support. ?It makes me feel better,? he said. ?I can?t control anything that?s going on, some people are going to want Pudge, but I know that I?m a good player and that I?m going to be a better player.? mlb.com
January 26, 200422 yr This is a very interesting and unique situation. It's all going to come down to where Pudge's priorities are. Hopefully, Pudge remembers how great last season was and how much fun he had and comes back to the marlins. I know a lot of people dislike Pudge for what he did, and believe me I was pissed that he decide not to come back, but if he were to turn down more money in Detroit and come back to the fish, he would regain some of the respect I had for him.
January 26, 200422 yr where are the Pudge-backers now? Where are ALL of you who insited you were so intelligent and how anyone that told you the TRUTH that Berardino lured you gullible lemmings in. I was TOTALLY correct. Thank goodness, we are spared the Marlins making the STUPIDEST move in baseball history. Good riddance Pudge. Enjoy Detroit.
January 26, 200422 yr Becoming more clear as I said from the beginning. Berardino made up a story, and the gullible lemmings fell in step. Pudge ain't going to be a Marlin. Maybe now, we can all move on and support the team and the players who WANT to play here.

Looks as of now that Pudge to Detroit is far from being a done deal.
January 26, 200422 yr now why should I take what Clark Spencer wrote and take that to the bank instead of what Mike Berardino wrote?
January 26, 200422 yr Let's see who is correct? Pudge is not going to be a Marlin. No money for him. Berardino made this up, and go ahead and believe it. Why do you believe Pudge would wait til May 1 to sign for less money? Why do you believe the Marlins would even want him on May 1? Marlins can't negotiate with him. You act as if Pudge is so desperate to return to the Marlins he will sign for practically nothing? Let's see who wins this debate. When you lose it, you will be reminded of your defeat very often.

I don't think anyone is arguing that Pudge coming back is likely to happen. But to dismiss it as not possible is just stupid. Unless you've talked to Pudge yourself you have no idea what decision he will make. Sounds to me like you are arguing just for the sake of arguing.
January 26, 200422 yr It's not entirely Pudge's decision. Unless Pudge is so desperate to play here for less than 5 mil or so he isn't coming back. Anyone who believes there is a chance Pudge will come back is stupid. This is a stupid topic, one made up by Berardino. It's not based on fact. It's base on fiction. It's based on a rule that allows talks to happen on May 1. So therefore, any free agent not offered arbitration and faces that May 1 deadline means Pudge wants to return to the Marlins. That is so off base. It's based on a Jack McKeon quote saying he'd love Pudge back. Of course Jack would, because Pudge is better than Castro/Redmond. Or at least we believe he is because Castro has never played enough to see how good he is. Money decisions are made by Samson/Loria/Beinfest. The team isn't going to put any extra money toward Pudge. They are trying to get this stadium done. Also, I'd rather than have the money to sign their players who want to be here, Beckett, Cabrera, etc., than waste my time or energy on a greedy player in decline and his agent who shrugged off the Marlins last offer and told the team that there was 4 years, 40 mil out there. Let's see how forthright Boras was. As fans, we need to let Pudge go, thank him for his help in the playoffs, but it was his choice to walk. Fans should stop being so gullible because Berardino made up a story that you all bit on.

Fans should stop being so gullible because Berardino made up a story that you all bit on. I think a previous poster had it right. You're just arguing for the sake of arguing. What fans "need" to do is what each choses to do individually not collectively. Most all fans know what the situation is and realize he made a decision to look for employment elsewhere. Some harbor bad feelings, some don't. Some want him back at any price, others are more pragmatic. It has very little to do with Berrardino's ramblings, real or imagined. His piece simply brought some focus back on the guy. The chances of Pudge returning are slight. But for those fans who wish to hold onto the dream a while longer they have every right to do so. If you want to say "As a fan, I needed to let Pudge go..." no one i stopped you from doing so, but you don't have the authority to blanketedly determine what's correct for all fans. Your comments are valid and I happen to agree with your view of how this will play out but that said if someone wants to fantasize, let them. No one likes to have someone rain on their parade, especially with an "I have all the answers" attitude.
January 26, 200422 yr I remember Beinfest saying that Pudge won't be back this season. I mean, whatever happens, I don't even care anymore. This is such a dead topic already. I wish him the best with wherever he goes and I hope he's happy. If he comes back, yea, I'll be very happy but if he doesn't I am not going to cry over it and be pissed off. It's his decision. He's a grown man and he can make whatever decisions he wants to make.
January 26, 200422 yr Anyone who believes there is a chance Pudge will come back is stupid. That comment was NOT necessary at all. Sorry.
January 26, 200422 yr  You are probably right to do this, it is not going to go away until he signs somewhere, or doesn't.
January 26, 200422 yr what is best is to just put the wishful Pudge thinking away. This is tiresome and not going to happen. Pudge isn't going to give up spring training and any offer that is comparable to what the Marlins offered or more just to return in May. On March 15, the Marlins will know if they have a stadium in Miami or not. That's a much bigger issue, getting the stadium done. If that falls through, the team will likely move. So be focused on the big picture, putting the dollars where they matter and not on Pudge, who said he can get 40 mil elsewhere. Let's see if he is right about that.

Of course I'd love to agree with you on not raining on anyone's parade, but what's fair is fair. I was called a retard and a fool for making my arguments, yet no one blasted those who choose to personally attack someone for stating what is correct. That's fair enough. It's not my responsibility to let the gullible fools believe in something that isn't so. Thanks for confirming and stating that I AM CORRECT.
January 26, 200422 yr well I dont remember anyone calling you a retard but let me say this... I dont want Pudge coming back, I just think there is still that slight, slight chance thats all Im saying
January 26, 200422 yr there really is NO chance. Not slight or anything else. There is more chance that Andre Dawson will suit up for the Marlins and play left field than Pudge returning. The money isn't there. Pudge isn't going to sit out of spring training, praying. It's splitting hairs for no reason. The posts comparing this to Vlad are absolutely correct. Misinformation compounding itself and taking on its own life form. By RULE is there a chance? Well, BY RULE, if a player that fits the bill, like Pudge, waits til May 1 then he can "negotiate" with his former team. That's a very general topic. This has been twisted to Pudge saying he wants to return. To Pudge doing secret negotiations with Beinfest on the plane to Washington. Wonder how those secret talks went considering everyone's families were there and they all flew up on the team plane, and didn't spend a ton of time in DC. But I guess, Beinfest was zeroed in on spending all his time with Pudge, negotiating an eye wink deal while Pudge's wife was talking to Beinfest's wife. The theories about this are comical. Yet, I will be told there is a "slight chance" or a "possibility" that Pudge will be back.
