The Official Pudge Thread

Everyone is making predictions about Ramon Castro, and while I would love to see anything close to what everyone is anticipating, we really have no idea. He could be hitting .189 with 2 homeruns and 8 RBI's by mid-May. On the other hand, he could be tearing it up. Truth is, we have no idea. He has never had anything close to playing a full season in the Major Leagues, so all these predictions are pretty much just biased opinions.

I, for one, would love to see Pudge back. He gave us a lot more than just statistics. His leadership on the field was immeasureable. The way he kept the young pitchers composed and came through in the clutch was something you can't rate on paper.

I would also love to give Castro a year to prove his worth, but if there's a way to get Pudge back to defend our title, I'm 100% for it.

b) sign and trade with the Tigers just to get the player who should have signed with us in the first place. That means we lose talent on top of the time/press lost just to get Fudge back

I agree with you on that Johnny .... if we are to get him, i dont wanna lose talent in the process ... id trade Castro for a relief pitcher if thats the case.

I agree. If we could get him back at $8 mill he would be well worth the investment. i do not feel that it is a coincidence that all of our young pitchers came around as strongly as they did in the same year. having a catcher who is truly a team leader is an invaluable asset - Castro may have the bat to rival Pudge, but he will not have the respect that Pudge had. When your pitchers respect their catcher, they let him coach them during the game, which helps them remain productive. And his defense - while not where it used to be - is clearly stellar, and can change games. anyone who says otherwise wasn't watching when Nick Johnson got thrown out at 3rd during the World Series.

what do u think will happen if pudge does come back. there would be some mad people some happy people and most mixed feelings not knowing whetther too boo or cheer.probaly most cheers but i dont know

everyone would love him, and welcome him like a prodigal son. he would get the biggest cheers of anyone on the team on May 1st when he was announced. the people who are mad are only mad b/c they wanted him to play here so bad.

folks, this is made up and is not a possibility. Berardino has made up another story. Go ahead and believe it "could" happen. It's totally bogus. But believe in silly non stories if it makes you feel better. There is no standing offer for Pudge. The team has repeatedly said the money isn't there. But believe Berardino.

Uh, Bernadino isn't the only one reporting this.

Not at all like playing DA. that's playing DUMB. Comparing a myth that Pudge can return is totally different than comparing the ACTUAL players on the team. Marlins don't have a standing offer for Pudge. But go ahead and believe they do. As the story said, a Tigers signing him and trading Pudge to Marlins is against the rules. This isn't happening. But play DA if it makes you feel better. The only thing this myth has done is give you something to talk about. It's factually without merit. And if you choose to play DA, then present some credible evidence that this so far fetched scenario can become fact. I'd love to hear your argument. So would the judge and jury.

Here's my stance on the whole Pudge situation.

If we get a chance to sign him for what we offered before than I'd do it. I know he made a lot of people here mad when he left, but I look back at the season and he played hard all season and did everything he could to help this team win, and if he will come back and bring that same intensity to the field that's all that matters to me.

Also, if we sign Pudge then we would be able to trade Castro for some bullpen help maybe and that is sorely needed. I'm not to crazy about having Pudge sign with another team and then he's traded to us though.

why are we so angry?...

some has reason to believe things, while others are just hoping this will happen

Trading for Pudge would be the stupidest move in history. The ONLY way I'd sign Pudge is at a bargain basement discount, less than 4 mil. If he is miraculously out there on May 1, as some without all their capacities believe, he isn't worth a full year's salary. I'd make Pudge crawl back, apologize and sign for less than 4 mil. Anyone that would want Pudge for a huge contract at the expense of not being able to sign Beckett down the road is blinded and not rooting for the best interest of the team. Pudge gave us one great year. We gave him a title. Pudge decided to flee for more money. If he can't get it elsewhere, it's not up to the Marlins to make sure he has enough cash to build his wife a statue too.

It's not angry. It's reality. You said you were being DA. I asked you as a DA to produce evident. If you want to root as a fan for miracles, go ahead. Now I know that your posts are based on emotions and not facts. So I won't engage in cordial, educated conversation. I know what I'm dealing with, a fan who doesn't pay attention to the facts.

Appologise for what?

I actually hope this somehow happens. Who knows. Pudge is an upgrade over Castro/Redmond, obviously.

Hmm...stupidest move in history? Wow ! But tell us how you really feel about re-signing Pudge.

People thought trading Cliff Floyd was the stupidest move in history, or selling off the '97 Marlins, or trading Babe Ruth, the list is endless.

If this is the stupidest move in history then I'm prepared to be labeled stupid (knowing of course I'm going to pay dearly for saying so). I'm a realist. I know there's a 5% chance of it happening, that doesn't mean I have to stop wanting it to happen.

I was thinking about this awhile ago. How it felt to come the park that night and taking our seats down the first base line and Pudge and JP would come to run their sprints in rightfield and the music would start up and jumbotron would do its thing and people would start filling the stadium and there would be Pudge, standing out there shaking his fists, getting people excited, and you just knew he wasn't going to let you down, that win or lose Pudge was going to do everything he could to win one more game.

I've been dreaming about baseball for more than fifty years. I'm not going to stop now.

indeed it would be the stupidest move in baseball history. The fact of trading for Pudge after being unable to sign Pudge. Explain how that makes sense. I'll spell it out for you. First, Pudge was insulted for being offered a pay cut. So say the Tigers sign Pudge for 40 mil over 4 years, the same thing he wanted from Florida but didn't get. Then the Marlins turn around and acquire that contract and trade a player or players or prospects to the Tigers? Yes, that is ABSOLUTELY STUPID. I don't mean to burst your bubble for dreaming. You say 5 percent chance? What do you mean by that? There is ZERO chance. The ONLY chance is if PUDGE does a complete about face and says he will NOT sign elsewhere and take his chances of negotiating with the Marlins on May 1. For that to happen, Pudge would commit to hearing NO other offers. Then on May 1, he would have to negotiate with the Marlins who say there isn't 8 mil sitting around for him. But go ahead and believe this will happen. This isn't some lottery sweepstakes with odds. Pudge is negotiating with the Tigers and maybe the Mariners. The Marlins are NOT a factor. If by your wishful thinking logic Pudge is out there May 1. He won't get 8 mil. Nor should he. Why pay a year's salary for less than a year's work. For that to happen, it WOULD BE STUPID. If you can follow the facts then you will understand why this is stupid.

The stupidest move in baseball history was, is, and always will be the selling of Babe Ruth by the Red Sox to the Yankees. End of story.

And didn't we already prove the legality of this trade (Sorry I'm skipping around in the conversation, but didn't see that until now).

I hope we don't sign pudge, anyways we won't need him this is a team that can work together there's no "I" in team.

Trading for Pudge would be the stupidest move in history.

The stupidest move in history? Wtf?

Try signing CJ for a monster amount of money a couple of years ago. Or like Marlins2003 said, the Cliff Floyd trade, selling of the 97 Marlins, selling of Babe Ruth. How about in your thinking, the goat not being allowed into Wrigley how about that? And if we got Pudge back, wth are we supposed to do with Castro? :banghead

Oh yeah cool off a bit, I'm only allowed to give people a piece of my mind when they are ignorant and being asses. Also I wouldn't suggest insulting moderators around here, they got eyes and ears all over the place...

Beinfest is already on the record saying he isn't about to undermine the rules of baseball. And yes I'd say there's about a five perecnt chance of the Fish re-signing Pudge.

As for whether Pudge returns, I'll leave that to the front office.

There's nothing "stupid" or as you insist on using the word "STUPID" about dreaming/wishing/hoping that a player re-signs. While I and others try to find value you in your posts you seem to think the way to win people over to your way of thinking is to label their opinions STUPID or ABSOLUTELY STUPID, which where I come from doesn't win you alot of votes.

I happen to agree with you much more than you know (I suggested there was a 95% chance you were right) but your approach is reprehensible.

But in the end, when you reference this as "the stupidest move in baseball history" you've already lost the debate.

I don't understand how getting back a future hall of famer would be the "stupidest move in baseball history". That's what I don't get.

From MLB.com ...

MIAMI -- The Marlins will be honored by President Bush Friday at the White House for winning the World Series.

During the expected one-hour visit with the President, catcher Ivan Rodriguez is scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C., with the team. But just because the 32-year-old who was the Most Valuable Player of the NLCS is joining the Marlins for the day doesn't mean he will wear teal and black this season.

General manager Admin Beinfest on Thursday dismissed speculation that Rodriguez will somehow rejoin the team, either on May 1 or through a trade.

Because the Marlins were unable to reach agreement with Rodriguez by a Dec. 7 deadline, the earliest the Marlins can talk again with the 10-time All-Star free agent would be May 1, an unlikely situation because Rodriguez is in the midst of negotiations with the Tigers.

"There is no deal," Beinfest said. "I think it was unfortunate because this was a great marriage. I think for all the reasons except money, Pudge should be a Marlin."

The Tigers reportedly have a four-year, $40 million offer to Rodriguez, who rejected a two-year, $16 million proposal from the Marlins in early December. Florida's offer is believed to have included a third year option for another $8 million.

"He is a free agent," Beinfest said. "We cannot talk to him."

Beinfest also diffused rumors that a team could sign Rodriguez and then trade him to Florida. Beinfest says that would circumvent a league rule, and is not possible.

So as speculation about where Rodriguez ends up this season continues, the Marlins are planning to enter Spring Training with Ramon Castro and Mike Redmond sharing the catcher position.
