  1. People are going into panic mode already? miamibaseball is always in panic mode. 24/7 :lolup
  2. wasn't Uggla "Popeye" (es espanol)? Yah Uggla was Popeye! Ha, I think he likes the guy a little too much. Did you see him biting him after the walkoff against the Giants on Sunday. Lol
  3. The nicknames he may be referring to were the ones (God I forgot who) that a player used when he was announcing the lineup one night. Maybe Amezaga. He called Helms "The Closer", etc. Ring a bell with anyone? Yah that was Amezaga announcing the nicknames. He did the whole lineup in spanish. I think another was Matt "El Loco" (Crazy one) Treanor. Mark "La Escalera" (The Ladder) Hendrickson. Jorge "Paisano" (Countryman) Cantu. Hmm, can't remember any more.
  4. Someone get this article posted on the Visitor's clubhouse. I want this team so pissed off that Johan won't know what hit him OR his pitches!! The Star-Ledger Hmm, I think this has already been brought up under Oh Willie, you didn't really say that.... Pretty sure they've already seen it :thumbup
  5. Well usually i walk around the house with a Marlins thong, twenty minutes before every road game. Wow, you must have more faith than me. I normally have to wear the bra AND thong combo.
  6. I don't understand. This sounds perfectly acceptable to me. Oh wait. I thought this was the NY Bulls soccer forum.
  7. Andino can play 4 IF positions and pinch run. McPherson can screw up at 2 IF positions and has a bad back. Andino can't hit the water if he fell out of a boat. Are you really saying Andino is more valuable to this team than McPherson could be? Could? I suppose he could be the greatest thing since canned beer. Atleast "could" is better than "couldn't". And a Mexican is better than a Mexican't.

There's no question in my mind that at some point this is going to become a owner vs umpires issues in collective bargaining where the "guy in the booth" or however it works out will be part of the umpiring crew. This is an imperfect sport played and run by imperfect people, and that's part of the game. Having an umpire's "eyes" on home runs 200 ft away from the nearest umpire makes sense and is sellable, going beyond that to computers calling balls and strikes gets a little too close to "Robot Baseball", and I don't think that's good for the game. I don't know. Robot Baseball seems pretty interesting...

So ESPN is reporting that instant replay may be tested in the Arizona Fall League to see its effectiveness during games. If successful the potential is there to use it in MLB as early as next season. I know this has been discussed here, and I'm all for it, but how far does it go? Just home run calls? Close plays? I'm thinking home run calls should be sufficient, but replaying every close call at first is overboard IMO. Thoughts? Article
  10. You can always go to their Myspace pages. Alot of the players have really cool ones. You should see Olsen's blogs. I think he's using them to vent his frustration this year instead of on the mound. He's quite the poet! Are they their REAL pages or people claiming that they are them or are they just fan pages? Um, I was joking. Well, I have never checked at least. I wouldn't doubt if some of the younger guys had them.

  12. Here's an interesting article from Popular Science with corresponding research data: She blinded me with science! ?We found that the batted-ball speeds were essentially the same for the two woods,? Sherwood said. ?Maple has no advantage in getting a longer hit over an ash bat.? - Jim Sherwood, the director of the Baseball Research Center at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell At least we know with ball players sometimes superstition wins out over data. I know this is off topic but i just stare at your avatar for like 2 mins everytime i see it. fat people gettin "jiggy wit it" is hilarious! They give the best jiggy!

It's not about the length of the hit. The bats are lighter, which allows for a quicker swing. Maybe I'm confused about why some players first began making the switch. Barry Bonds (before Steroid-gate) is largely credited with the catalyst for the shift in bat material. I felt that players were largely attracted to his increase in long balls. I mean didn't he hit 70+ hr's in 2001 when he first started using one? And a sport where the long ball pleases GM's and crowds, I would think players would do anything for an advantage in this department.

  15. Yeah, but all he has is hustle. You know a guy is pretty bad when all you can talk about is his hustle. Quite true quite true. But I think a hustler you can play in almost any position is still a valuable asset even with the offensive shortcomings.
  16. Speaking of Alfredo.....STOP PLAYING HIM Uh, as I recall he was one of our runs tonight. Not to say he couldn't do better, but his hustle got us one tonight.
  17. Marlins gaining respect That's why I think you guys will win the NL East. You all don't give up. We all talk about that in our clubhouse, how we can't take you lightly because you guys never give up whereas some teams do. - Reds shortstop Jerry Hairston Jr. to Wes Helms I think the respect from players is more important than any kind of respect we can expect from the media 'experts'. Agreed?
  18. Freddi is a manager; not Walter Mercado. Please tell us if we will win against KC Walter...
  19. This is the discussion about the postponment today (4/15). Makeup information will be posted as it comes in. These are the possible make-up dates June 23: Marlins on the way home from Oakland, Cincy between NY(Yankees) and Toronto. Would be 19 in a row for CINCY and 24 in a row for the Fish AUG 18: CINCY home vs STL and out on the way to CHI (Cubs) while the Marlins have the Cubs at home and head on the road to San Fran. 12 in a row for Cincy and 20 in a row for FLA Aug 25: CINCY goes from Colorado to Houston and Florida from Arizona to Atlanta so not gonna happen SEP 11: Cincy between Milwaukee and Arizona, Florida between Philidelphia and home...perobably not gonna happen Sep 15: Cincy between Arizona and home. Marlins stay home...probably not gonna happen Sep 22: Cincy between home and Houston-Marlins between home and Washington. POSSIBLE Hey alright! A guaranteed .500 road trip. Not bad if you ask me.
  20. Looks like he's heating up. I say he should be playing everyday for the time being. His plays may not look as spectacular, but I think he's a much better defensive CF than Amezaga, and obviously he's hitting better, at least for the moment. What say all of you? Not sure if I'd say better defensively. Both of them are pretty even if you ask me. But as far as a bat in the lineup, I'd say Cody is a dash better in that category. Until he cools off of course, which he tends to do. Amezaga is a great all around utility player but not an everyday CF as we can all see.
  21. I'm just glad Miguel Olivo isn't starting. Anything is an improvement over him. Worst starting player for the Marlins in the last 10 years? Worse than Castro?
  22. I have to admit, I left and went to see Iron Man after the 8th inning. Don't let this team break your heart, folks. How did you like it? I thought it was great
  23. Anyways... I'm not a big Fredi basher but sending Pinto out for a second inning when he struggled mightily in the 9th wasn't too bright. I don't understand. People complain when they send out one of our struggling bullpen pitchers (Tankersley) out on the mound who proceeds to give up the 2 blasts. These same people complain when they send out our ace bullpen pitcher (Pinto) who proceeds to give up the game winning single to a rookie. Who would the people here with the crystal balls have sent out? This is baseball folks. The difference between a brilliant move and a donkey move seems to be less than a few inches. I'm sure if we would have won these games the same people would be praising the brilliance of the moves. We're gonna have struggling pitchers that need to see some pressure situations to work out their kinks, and we're gonna have pitchers who are all but untouchable whom we demand perfection from. I think its hard to juggle a relief staff and make sure that everyone who is struggling finds ample time to get back their mojo and the people that are lights out find time to keep from getting rusty. Pinto has come through for us this year and has gotten us out of many jams, so I don't question his decision to keep him in there. We still have one of the best bullpen's in baseball so let's stay positive!
  24. Article Reeling In Those Pesky Marlins Kevin Klein / Staff Writer Published Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Issue 127 / Volume 88 Every year this happens: One Major League Baseball team becomes the fodder for sports writers early in the season because of its mysteriously sparkling record. Last year it was the Milwaukee Brewers. On this day last year the Brewers held a record of 25-11, then tops in the majors. Led by Prince Fielder?s innate homerun abilities and love of the Milwaukee sausages, the Brew Crew took advantage of an easy opening schedule, racking up wins against terrible competition. Hell, even Chris Capuano was 5-0 to start the season. Then reality happened. The Brewers started playing teams other than the Pirates, Cards and Nationals and their grip on the worst division in baseball slipped. Capuano went on an epic losing streak ending the season with a 5-12 record, the young team stopped hitting as the drudge of the summer led into fall, and Milwaukee finished the season four games over .500 and two out of the Central?s playoff spot. With this precedent from last year established it?s now time to analyze this year?s overachiever award - which goes to none other than those Florida Marlins. If you have watched ESPN or read any sports related magazine, you no doubt have seen the takes on the Marlins and the Tampa Bay Rays. Are they for real? This question has been salivated over by many a sports writer, but no one seems to speak in regards to the two teams? schedules. First off, there are 162 games in a season. The Marlins? record currently stands at a major league best 23-15 (tied with the D-Backs and Cubs) thanks in part to their recently snapped seven-game winning streak. Although credit is due to the Marlins for having the lowest payroll in the majors at right around $22.5 million, about the cost of a pair of A-Rod?s socks, and finally locking up the number-one fantasy player in Hanley Ramirez with a six-year contract extension, there is just no way they can continue to win at this rate. As a team the Marlin bats are just crushing the ball, while their pitching just goes along for the ride. The team currently ranks fifth in the majors in on-base plus slugging thanks in part to having the most homeruns out of all 30 teams. Dan Uggla (1.027 OPS, 28 RBI, 12 HR) and Ramirez (.331 BA, 9 HR, 13 SB) are studs and deserve all the accolades that they amass, but offensively every other Marlin is overachieving. The Marlins currently rank fourth to last in save opportunities and during their recent win streak won games by an average of five runs - that adds up to simply beating their opponents senseless with their bats. I am a true believer in the idea that pitching wins championships and the Marlins just do not have enough. The Marlins? current starting rotation is comprised of Scott Olsen (4-1, 2.63 ERA) and Mark Hendrickson (5-1, 3.56 ERA). After that, all they have is super-prospect Andrew Miller followed by a rock and an old shoe. Anybody who watched Hendrickson pitch when he was with the Dodgers knows that his numbers must be either a mirage or just pure luck, which leaves Olsen to be the only legit starter in my eyes. Once this team starts to play real competition, expect to see the bullpen early and often because this pitching is not going to last. Now onto the most important reason the Marlins are so far over .500 - their schedule. Thus far, Florida has a winning record against just one team playing over .500 ball, with their 3-2 record against the Braves. The rest of their wins have come over the Nationals, Padres, and slumping Brewers - three of the most miserable teams at the moment. Florida is 15-3 against these teams while just 8-12 against the rest of the NL. Having an 8-1 record against the Double-A Nats proves nothing, when you have yet to play a significant number of games against the Mets (NY leads season series 2-1) and have yet to even face last year?s NL East Champion Phillies. These ingredients have the Marlins? high hopes destined for disintegration. Florida?s math just does not add up, and I hate to disappoint all eight fans that go to their games, but expect to see them drift to the bottom of the standings by mid-June. However, on a positive note, anticipate the fellow ?Sunshine State? Rays to continue to impress, given the high caliber teams they have already proven they can beat in the stacked AL East, showing the Marlins that its who you beat that makes you a contender. Daily Nexus staff writer Kevin Klein sidles up to his David Wright poster every night before going to bed to ask his hero when the Mets plan on overtaking the Marlins. Typical Mets fan.
  25. why have we not hitting well ??leaving so many on base during this series??? it not like their have winning record look how play better vs washington a place team Umm yeah, everyone needs to take some of these... And miamibaseball maybe you need a double dose. What happens if I take a whole bottle of those? :lol Well if you time it right, you should come out of your stupor just in time for the playoff run!
